Booting a DN2820FYKH without a monitor, then plugging a monitor in

I am trying to get Linux to boot reliably with and without a monitor on a DN2820FYKH.

Upgrading to 0047 bios got it booting at all, but...

If I boot without a monitor plugged in then I won't get video when a monitor is plugged in.  In addition, if I boot with a monitor, then change over to a higher resolution one, the higher resolution is not recognized.

I've tried Ubuntu 12.04 server (no X) & desktop (with X), plus a custom-built root filesystem and kernel (no X), all with the same results.  I've tried about half a dozen different units, they all behave the same.

I tried to unload & reinstall the i915 kernel module to redo the initialization and EDID scan, but I can't get the ref count on the module to go to 0.

Recognizing a monitor seems like pretty basic functionality, but I see that there have been a lot of video problems with the NUC, so maybe this is as good as it gets?

I'd love any clues anyone might have about re-initializing the driver, or causing it to fail to load unless there's a monitor plugged in to allow it to be loaded later, or just general help with debugging between the HDMI connector and the framebuffer device.
