No video signal on my NUC D54250WYKH

I have a new NUC D54250WYKH.  It is connected to my Acer v198w via an adapter that converts the NUC's HDMI mini jack to a standard VGA adapter out, which then connects to the VGA IN on my Acer monitor. The very first time it powered on I got a startup screen.  It asked me to fill in a few questions like locale, time zone, etc, and that all went fine.  Then it asked me for my Windows product key to activate it.  While I was searching for that key the screen went blank with the PC still on.  No matter what key combinations I pressed, the video signal did not come back.  I eventually powered down by holding the power button down for 5 seconds.

Now I can't get a video signal no matter what I do.  I tried powering on while pressing the F2 key multiple times to get the BIOS.  But it doesn't work.  I assume by the patterns of disk activity shown by the disk activity LED that the unit and keyboard is indeed working.  I say this, because during my F2 attempts, the LED flashes briefly and then stops.  If don't press F2 during a power on, the hard disk is active for about 30 seconds as it would be if I were booting up windows.  If I tap random keys in this second context then I do see the hard disk LED flash a bit as if something is reacting to my keypresses.  However, no video signal.  If I retry the F2 attempt then again on startup I get a short burst of disk activity then nothing, as if the system is entering the BIOS.

So it appears as if the system stored some setting about my video configuration that is preventing it from finding a usable state again.  What can I do to fix this?  Remember, I may be getting into the BIOS but I can't see what I'm doing now.
