Headphones: What headphone are actually compatable with the NUC units?

So,

I've got three NUCs... two D54250WYK and one NUC5i7RYH.  They are handy little units, but... I've never been able to get an iPhone headset, or a Bose 20i headset to work with them.

The left channel is always dead, and the right channel has sound.  This usually means you have the wrong type of headset... but...

If you go to this page it indicates that the "iPhone Ear Phone*" is a compatible headset... It doesn't actually work, and there is no explanation anywhere about what the asterisk is for:

Intel® NUC Boards and Kits — Tested Peripherals

To say this is annoying, well, thats an understatement.  The documentation list NO hint of compatibility for the audio jack on the front of the units.  Moreover, it's not really clear what standard the jack is?

(For example, I'd expect that technical specifications to say something like: 3.5 mm 4-conductor TRRS phone connector, or 4-pole 3.5mm connector standard JEITA/EIAJ RC-5325A, etc.)

Does anyone know what type of headphone / earbud sets are compliant with the NUC PCs?  I'm really not interested in purchasing headphones that will not work...
