NUC7i5BNH - memory errors when both slots populated

$

Hi, all.

After experiencing multiple BSODs (MEMORY_MANAGEMENT and PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA) with my new NUC7i5BNH, I've found through trial and error that the cause appears to be memory errors - but the errors only occur when both slots are populated.

My NUC's hardware consists of:

2 x Crucial CT16G4SFD8213 16GB 2133MHz SODIMMs

1 x Crucial CT1050MX300SSD4 1TB M.2 SSD

The NUC has been updated to the latest 0047 BIOS, and the BIOS is using default settings. (I had previously turned Hyper-Threading off with the 0046 BIOS in case that was the problem, but it didn't help; after updating to 0047 I reloaded the default settings but that made no difference either.)

I've tested each SODIMM individually in both the lower and upper memory slots, and the system works perfectly with either one as long as the other slot is empty; the NUC runs stably and repeated tests show no memory errors. Populating both slots and booting into Memtest86, however, results in memory test failures. Memtest86 also sometimes crashes midway through the test, showing "CPU Error: Could not start CPU 0".

At first the memory errors were extremely intermittent and I had difficulty reproducing them reliably, but now they occur nearly all the time when both slots are filled and a Memtest86 test is run. Are there any further steps I should try before considering an RMA?

Picture of the fanside of the intel NUC7i5

Hello.

As I won't be close to my NUCs for 24 hours, I have had the question from the case designer:
Do you have a picture of the fanside of the board of the NUC?

And gunning for the airport, I don't?

Anyone?

[ISSUE] NUC5i3RYH updating to any version after 0356 is not successful - unsupported legacy bios OR update successful but effectively not installed

$
0
0

Scenario

I have 3 of same NUCs and one of them is freaking out.

I have already called the Intel support and the operator gave me instructions how to use the F7 method and also how to recover the BIOS (pushbutton > F4). The F7 method won't update either.

Model: NUC5i3RYH

Current BIOS: RYBDWi35.86A.0356.2016.0506.1355, 06.05.2016

BIOS protection jumper is set to: 1-2

Behaviour

when trying to install RYBDWi35.86A.0362.EB after reboot it says your BIOS was successfully updated, however it did not even try to update on boot. No error message.

when trying to install RYBDWi35.86A.0358.EB after reboot it says unsupported legacy BIOS

when trying to install 0358.bio, via F7, no error message on boot, won't update

when trying to install 0362.bio, via F7, no error message on boot, won't update

when trying to recover BIOS using F4 with 0356.bio this is successful with no errors.

Expected behaviour

Update to subsequent version 0358 or later should work using F7 method or Windows Installer

Currently there is no way to force any upgrade from 0356 to a later version, if there will be no solution I have to consider to return the device (09/2015)

Solutions from cant update BIOS: unsupported legacy BIOS and

BIOS-Wiederherstellung-Update-Anleitungen für Intel® NUC

were all tested and solve the issue.

NUC7i7BNH constant reboot loop

$

I am trying to set up my new NUC7i7BNH with the following hardware:

The NUC powers up with a permanently lit blue LED, followed by a reboot after roughly 15 seconds of on time.

  • When removing the RAM, it correctly does the 3-time blinking signalling RAM failure
  • It does that regardless of whether the SSD is connected or not
  • It does that regardless of connected peripherals.
  • When connecting through HDMI (I do not have usb-c + DP), the monitor reports no signal. Both cable and monitor are working on all my other machines.

I then tried to remove the yellow BIOS jumper and on a handful of retries, I could get the NUC to boot into the bios boot menu (showing a warning that the BIOS jumper has been removed). From there I could see that the installed BIOS revision is 46.

I succeeded once in accessing the BIOS setup, but for a while now, neither position of the jumper (removed, 1+2, 2+3) seems to have any effect now.

Is there some issue that I'm not seeing or do I simply have a defective unit?

Best regards,

Oliver

NUC7i7bnh hibernation not working: it goes to sleep instead...

Hello guys.

I've got a NUC7i7BNH running windows 10 pro (with all the updates and drivers installed - btw, the drivers installed were downloaded from intel nuc's support page). I've updated the power settings so that:

  1. I can hibernate it
  2. I can hibernate it by hitting the shutdown button.

Now, my problem is that sometimes, when I try to hibernate it, it will simply go to sleep instead. I've noticed some entries on the event viewer that seem to point this. FOr instance, here's one:

The system is entering sleep.

Sleep Reason: Button or Lid

Now, does someone know why this would happen? How can I fix this?

I mean, this is my first NUC but hibernation is  something I've been using for years without any problems...I'm guessing that this is just another negative point to add to the NUC's list (another thing to add to the misterious BSOD that happen from time to time and nobody knows why...)

Thanks.

HI all,

My NUC keeps crashing (NUC7I7BHN) at least twice a day and finally a mini dump. I ran BlueScreenView on it and captured the DLL detail below at bottom. Note I uninstalled the latest(as of 5/10) and now ok never crashes. I don't have the new sleep functionality with the standard MS Driver but I do get the highest res. I would like to get this to work if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

NUC7I7BNH and Windows Server 2012 and 2016 - WARNING

$

I was very hopeful I could replace my LAB Windows Servers with Intel NUCs.   Replacing a stand alone (desktop type computer) with a NUC seemed like a win-win.  Less space, less energy consumption, latest hardware, etc., however; to my dismay, Intel and/or Microsoft have decided not to support Windows Server 2012 and 2016 on the Intel NUC.   I made the mistake of assuming if Windows 10 would work on a NUC so would Windows Server 2016 - never had a problem before installing Windows Server on "desktop" computers.   My mistake, should have done more research.

So - BE WARNED - you will be able to install Windows Server 2016 on a NUC, but most of the hardware drivers that are needed will not be there, especially the onboard NIC driver.   What good is a computer with no network connection?   Windows Server 2016 does not even recognize there is a NIC installed.   I downloaded and tried using the latest Window 10 drivers from the NUC download site, but that did not work either.   I did run across a couple of potential hacks, which I might have tried if it was just the NIC, but there are no display adapter drivers, wireless drivers, sound drivers, etc.

It really is a shame.   It seems like Intel/MS *deliberately* do not want users to run Windows Server OSes on a NUC (how hard would it be for Intel to use hardware that is supported?).   In a Production environment, probably would not want to use NUCs, but in a LAB/Testing/Education/Home environment  - the NUCs would be perfect.   So -  back to the store with my NUC.

USB-C to VGA adapter

Hello!

I'm planning to buy a NUC7i7BNHX1 but I have a doubt. Since my monitor only has a VGA connector I would need to buy an USB-C to VGA adapter. As I assume that not all adapters work because of the built-in DisplayPort, what specification should the adapter have? Thanks.

Thanks.

NUC noise

I'm using my nuc (7i7BNH) for many things and one of them is to listen to music. I'm an audiophile, listening to music at low levels where every noise is noticeable and annoying. I upgraded to NUC7i7BNH from my old and trusty mac mini (2013). I can say that the nuc is lot more noisy compared with the mac (which has mechanical HDD and fan, while the only mechanical moving part in the nuc is the fan).

So I started looking for solutions and discussing the problem with the manufacturers of the fanless cases (cause that's the only acceptable solution if you want totally silent NUC).

Without further testing (as the cases are still traveling to my location) and based on the technical parameters available online + the test results and information shared by the manufacturers, if you want completely silent NUC, and don't want to worry about issues if you load it for extended period of time, get the slowest nuc (7i3) and the best cooling solution (the manufacturer claims that it's their Plato X7).

I have no idea what will happen with the NUC warranty if you choose to go with custom case, but if this voids the warranty, then why Intel is not providing such solution so we can buy it.

There are better solutions compared to the Plato X7, but lot more expensive so I haven't done any research on them (because of the price).

I'm not advertising any product, just sharing my findings so far in my research to have completely silent NUC.

NUC BIOS keeping old boot device data

$

This is the first time I've seen something like this, and it's really quite annoying.

I have some Sandisk 32GB USB sticks onto which I've put an acronis restore image.

It seems that for some reason, I can boot from these on a NUC5i5RYK on the first pass, but if I apply an image, and then attempt to boot from those same USB sticks again, the NUC boot menu just hangs onto the fact that a Sandisk USB was used to boot from at some point -- even if I plug in a USB from another vendor (in this case, ADATA). It always shows as SANDISK UEFI USB BOOTLOADER. When I select that, the screen flashes and passes me back to the BIOS boot menu. It never sees the name of the USB stick as ADATA after that Sandisk has been used to boot it.

I have tried four USB sticks, all the same Sandisk stick design.

I've heard of some issues here and there with USB 3 chipsets on USB sticks, but never seen something like this, and I've done this literally thousands of times on other systems/motherboards.

This makes NO SENSE at all. The BIOS is up to date on this particular system, and I have not done  BIOS refresh, although I will try it. However, this is inane. If I boot from another NUC which hasn't been previously booted off that Sandisk USB, it will properly recognize the ADATA USB stick in boot menu and boot from it.

So it seems to me that for some reason, these NUCs are holding onto information about the device they previously booted from and refusing to let go of it.

This is possibly the most inane issue I've ever seen.

NUC7I5BNH keeps freezing/crashing in Windows 10

$

So like many others I'm having a number of problems with my NUC7I5BNH that doesn't resume from sleep properly and keeps freezing even when it's set to not sleep.  First, here's my hardware:

NUC7I5BNH

Windows 10 x64 Pro running Creator's Update

PNY CS2030 240GB M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - (M280CS2030-240-RB)

1 x G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB DDR4 2400 Model F4-2400C16S-8GRS

I've connected to two different displays that have both exhibited similar behavior

Vizio m55-C2 4k TV

CROSSOVER 324K UHD 32" 3840x2160 60Hz HDMI2.0 DP 4K LED Monitor

All drivers are up to date and I have updated the HDMI 2.0 firmware.

If I try to run at 3140x2160 @ 60Hz, the display flickers frequently, with it sometimes being so bad that the computer is completely unusable.  Running KODI, NETFLIX, or even just some websites in Chrome seem to make the problem worse.  The only thing that makes the flickering go away is if I go to 4k@30Hz or go down to 1080p at 60Hz.  I am using amazon basics hdmi 2.0 cables that worked fine driving 4k@60Hz with my 5th generation NUC so I'm fairly certain it's not the cable.

In addition to the flickering issues, the computer would not wake either monitor when it resumed from sleep >50% of the time and had to be reset using the power button.  As a temporary solution, I disabled sleep entirely and that seemed to fix the problem.  HOWEVER, after upgrading the HDMI 2.0 firmware, I'm now seeing another similar problem but I have no idea what is going on.  After the display is turned off after 10 minutes, it eventually powers off but the computer is set to never sleep. When I power on the TV again, >50% of the time, the computer has frozen.  This is different than the previous behavior because before I could remotely login to the computer and restart it.  Now it is completely unresponsive and can't even be pinged.  It requires a hard reboot to get the computer to respond again.  I have looked in the event viewer and can't figure out why the computer is crashing.  There is an error message that says something like: "The previous system shutdown was unexpected." but gives no more information about the error.  Again, this problem seems to have started happening after updating the HDMI firmware.  Is there any way to check the current firmware version and is it possible the update went wrong somehow?

The only BIOS setting I have changed is disabling HDMI CEC (I can't remember if I enabled it in the first place or if it was on by default).

Please help!  I am at a complete loss as to what else to do to fix this problem and, as it stands, the NUC is hardly usable.

Gaming on NUC7i7BNH hot!

So I really only play Rocket League regularly and to be honest I don't have to even play it on the NUC but I enjoy playing on a pc rather than a console. I went to the intel page and put in the proper specs to play for Rocket league, man I'm impressed with what this NUC can handle, runs beautifully but at the same time as I am playing I am getting throttled and hitting 100 degrees almost every time. I feel like if I keep doing this I am going to fry something and the life of the machine will diminish drastically.

My question is would this kill my machine if I keep going? Is there a way to get it to stay cooler (I have tried putting the settings down a lot and I am still getting that 100 once and awhile). Do others hit this temperature as well?

Thanks

NUC6CAYH (Celeron J3455, Apollo Lake) restart always when try to sleep, hibernate or shutdown

Hi, I just purchased a NUC6CAYH. I have problems with sleep, hibernate and shutdown. I already installed Windows 10 Pro 3 times, Ubuntu 16.04, 16.10 once-once, openelec, but the BUC behaves the same. If I choose any of them the computer start the operation, but when it reaches the end it restart immediately. once-twice out of 10 I can shutdown completely (no led lights in the power button), but if I check within Windows (powercfg.exe) it says that was an improper shutdown.

I also tried all possible options within the bios and Windows (disable one-by-one, then reenable them).

As it happens with all tried OS, I supposed it should have problem either with some hardware parts (e.g. the AC adapter) or with the BIOS. I also installed all available BIOS (4 different versions: 0027, 0029, 0038, 0040), all available drivers (incl. chipset, TXE. Ready Mode Technology), but nothing helps. As I wrote I suspect to hardware malfunction, but before take it to replace I thought I would try to find solution here.

Thanks: Antal

NUC6i7KYK Boot from Thunderbolt

Is it possible to boot from the Thunderbolt port on the Skull Canyon Nuc (NUC6i7KYK) using an external drive as the operating system?  I'd like to boot off the Thunderbolt port and subsequently use the internal m.2 ssd's for a ReFS mirrored array or NTFS Raid 1.

NUC6i7KYK2 (Skull Canyon) Still Spontaneously Reboots with BIOS 0048

I am experiencing exactly what is described here: NUC6i7KYK2 (Skull Canyon) spontaneously reboots

When I boot into Windows 10.

  1. I am using the Latest BIOS firmware 0048.  Got it here: Downloads for Intel® NUC Kit NUC6i7KYK
  2. I've swapped 3 sets of RAM between Kingston and Corsair.
  3. I've ran over 20+ memtests over night, checks out.
  4. Always does the spontaneous reboot after a cold boot.  But rock solid after the first reset from cold boot.

I've tried Corsair's DDR4-3000, and Kingston HyperX DDR4 2133. XMP profile and Automatic.  Nothing has worked to keep the system from NOT spontaneously rebooting after a cold boot.

I am using a PNY NVMe SSD 480GB.  I doubt SSD is causing the issue?

Given 10-20 minutus, the computer just shuts off and I am greeted with the message:

BIOS has detected unsuccessful post attempt(s).

Possible causes include recent changes to BIOS

Performance Options or recent hardware change.

Press 'Y' to enter Setup or 'N' to cancel and attempt to boot with the previous settings.

Can we please get a fix? Or anyone know what is going on?  This little guy is awesome except for this massive caveat.

NUC7 i5/i7 Programmable LED and "start on power"

$

Hi

I have two questions on the  NUC7i5/i7

1. Programmable LED?

I think I have read that the front-LED is programmable. As this was not a feature of previous NUCs, Would need to have that confirmed and maybe a hint at a direction for where to find the info on how to program it.

We are on Windows, and what we would like to do is to use it to indicate different system status.

2. Start-on-power
On older NUCs we have been able to set them up so they start on power-on, and simply shut down when losing power.
Is that possible without doing hardware modifications to the Series-7 NUC?

NUC6CAYS - Random boot freeze

$

Hi,

I'm experiencing boot Issue with the NUC6CAYS + Ubuntu Server 16.04.02 LTS (kernel 4.8), Ubuntu Server 17.04 (kernel 4.10) and even with the UEFI USB Installer.

  • BIOS Version 0038 / HDMI 2.0 Firmware fix.
  • Default values in bios except: eMMC is disabled + supervisor password set ( I tried without a supervisor set too). Also tried the UEFI OS Selection to Linux, same issue
  • ADATA SP550 SSD is installed inside

Here is the story:

  • First I installed Ubuntu Server 16.04.02 LTS with HWE Stack (Kernel 4.8), everything was working fine BUT I noticed that sometimes, after a reboot, my NUC was stuck on a black screen right after the GRUB Menu.

  • I decided to give Kernel 4.10 a try so I installed Ubuntu Server 17.04 (kernel 4.10) and nothing else except updates. I did a small script to restart the computer every 30 seconds or so and again, randomly, the NUC was not rebooting. I see the GRUB Menu with Ubuntu selected and after the 2 seconds timeout, screen go black and nothing more happen.

  • After hours and hours of debugging and trying to find what the problem was, I decided to use a brand new SSD (same model) that I had on hand.
    • Disconnected the power of the NUC
    • Replaced my SSD
    • Connected my Ubuntu Server 17.04 USB installer made with Rufus
    • Connected power
    • Started NUC
    • Pressed F10 on boot, selected my USB and displayed the GNU GRUB Menu where I selected * Install Ubuntu Server and.....the same issue occurred,  black screen and nothing!!
    • I restarted the computer and tried it again... this time the Ubuntu Server installer started correctly.
    1. Boot
    2. Wait for GRUB Menu (eMMC is disabled and ssd brand new, so the USB boot automatically)
    3. Press Enter to start installation
    4. If the installer start, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and do it again.
  • I did it again, and again, again, at least 30 times without any issue than, after many retries same problem, black screen and nothing!

It's totally Random and really seems to be a BIOS issue to me since this time. When the black screen happen, ctrl+alt+del do nothing. I have to long press the power button for about 5 seconds to power off the NUC.

I should have a brand new NUC6CAYH tomorrow to test if it's specific to my NUC or not, since I already have NIC issue with this one but I need it for development (NUC6CAYS - Ethernet Issue )

Thanks a lot for support
