NUC7i5BNH Resume from S3 not working properly

NUC7i5BNH with latest bios 0046 running Windows 10 Professional fully patched with Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver device in either of the front USB ports. Consumer IR Device enabled in the bios, also wake on IR checked for both S3 and S4/S5 states in the bios:

1. Power toggle button on Harmony 200 remote puts NUC to sleep.

2. Hitting power toggle button again repeatedly shortly after putting the NUC to sleep wakes the NUC again.

3. Waiting any length of time after putting the NUC to sleep then pressing the power toggle button repeatedly fails to wake the NUC again.

Mouse or keyboard can always wake the NUC from sleep after any length of time.

The same USB eHome Infrared Transceiver device  and harmony 200 combination is used successfully to sleep and wake both a NUC D54250WYK and NUC NUC6I5SYH.

The ethernet driver is 12.15.25.6 and latest is 22.3.  The IME shows current 11.7.0.1014 and latest is 11.7.0.1017.  Everything else is latest (In some cases, I have a later version by 1 number??).  My Thunderbolt shows unknown for current.  Everything is running fine.  Should I continue to try updating?

Latest bios.  48 I think.  NUC7i7BNB

Communicating with a new Intel NUC6i5syh

$

0

I have just purchased a new NUC6i5SYH kit and installed:

Samsung 250GB SSD 850 EVO m.2;

Kingston 8GB HyperX DDR4

I now wish to start up the NUC to check the BIOS version, and then update as necessary before installing the OS. I am not sure whether I will use Windows 10, or LINUX at this stage, so want to update BIOS without OS.

This might sound like a total Newbie question, but how can I communicate with the NUC. I tried using a wireless Keyboard and mouse, but neither was recognised, so there was no way that I could "press F2" to enter BIOS.

Unfortunately I do not have access, at present, to a wired keyboard and mouse so cannot try that, but I did seem to remember reading somewhere that wireless can be used?

Any help on way to proceed would most welcome and appreciated.

NUC7I5BNH keeps freezing/crashing in Windows 10, constant flickering with 4k@60Hz

$

So like many others I'm having a number of problems with my NUC7I5BNH that doesn't resume from sleep properly and keeps freezing even when it's set to not sleep.  First, here's my hardware:

NUC7I5BNH

Windows 10 x64 Pro running Creator's Update

PNY CS2030 240GB M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - (M280CS2030-240-RB)

1 x G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB DDR4 2400 Model F4-2400C16S-8GRS

I've connected to two different displays that have both exhibited similar behavior

Vizio m55-C2 4k TV

CROSSOVER 324K UHD 32" 3840x2160 60Hz HDMI2.0 DP 4K LED Monitor

All drivers are up to date and I have updated the HDMI 2.0 firmware.

If I try to run at 3140x2160 @ 60Hz, the display flickers frequently, with it sometimes being so bad that the computer is completely unusable.  Running KODI, NETFLIX, or even just some websites in Chrome seem to make the problem worse.  The only thing that makes the flickering go away is if I go to 4k@30Hz or go down to 1080p at 60Hz.  I am using amazon basics hdmi 2.0 cables that worked fine driving 4k@60Hz with my 5th generation NUC so I'm fairly certain it's not the cable.

In addition to the flickering issues, the computer would not wake either monitor when it resumed from sleep >50% of the time and had to be reset using the power button.  As a temporary solution, I disabled sleep entirely and that seemed to fix the problem.  HOWEVER, after upgrading the HDMI 2.0 firmware, I'm now seeing another similar problem but I have no idea what is going on.  After the display is turned off after 10 minutes, it eventually powers off but the computer is set to never sleep. When I power on the TV again, >50% of the time, the computer has frozen.  This is different than the previous behavior because before I could remotely login to the computer and restart it.  Now it is completely unresponsive and can't even be pinged.  It requires a hard reboot to get the computer to respond again.  I have looked in the event viewer and can't figure out why the computer is crashing.  There is an error message that says something like: "The previous system shutdown was unexpected." but gives no more information about the error.  Again, this problem seems to have started happening after updating the HDMI firmware.  Is there any way to check the current firmware version and is it possible the update went wrong somehow?

The only BIOS setting I have changed is disabling HDMI CEC (I can't remember if I enabled it in the first place or if it was on by default).

Please help!  I am at a complete loss as to what else to do to fix this problem and, as it stands, the NUC is hardly usable.

INTEL NUC7I3BNH audio does not work in some TVs

Hi,

I recently got a Intel NUC7i3BNH and installed ubuntu 16.04 on it. Audio over hdmi does not work on Samsung UN46EH5300F TV. However, when I try it on Asus VE247H monitor the audio works all the time. Also audio over headphones or speakers also work all the time. I posted a question to ubuntu forums followign their audio troubleshooting page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure. It includes all the information about my nuc.

I also came across https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26609/HDMI-2-0-Firmware-Update-Tool-for-Intel-NUC-Kit-NUC7i3BN-NUC7i5BN-NUC7i7BN-NUC6CAY and it looks like intel made an firmware update because some nucs were facing some graphics issues for Samsung 6000 series TVs. I think what I am facing is similar. I don't get audio over hdmi for Samusng 5300 series TV.

I have been googling and it looks I am not the only person who is facing this issue. I was wondering if there was any solution to this problem.

Thanks.

NUC7i7BNH - 4K Video Resolution 3840x2160?

I have not found how to change the video resolution to the maximum allowed.

In Kodi, I only encounter up to full hd 1920x1080 and would like to keep the NUC at the maximum resolution allowed.

Is the 4K resolution available only when the hdmi cable is connected to a 4K TV?

My TV is full HD 1920x1080 and will that be the issue? I do not think so, and I'd like some tips on it, because the NUC will be connected to a 4K TV.

NUC5PPYH - experiences and problems

$

Hello,

here comes a critical experience report about NUC5PPYH with a few questions and recommendations to Intel:

HARDWARE:

I bought the NUC5PPYH in october 2016, installed Corsair Valueselect DDR3l 1x8GB 1600Mhz, no hard disk, all OS-installations I tried used either USB3-readers (SanDisk or Kingston with fast SD-cards) or a USB-DVD-drive (Samsung).

OPERATING SYSTEMS:

Ubuntu 14 LTS and 16 LTS run well.

OpenBSD 6.0 does not run well (installation is more-or-less possible, but when the system starts it has graphic problems, screen flickers already in command line mode on both HDMI and VGA, graphic mode doesn't run at all).

(interesting: the same USB-SD-card that has problems in the NUC starts and runs perfectly when I insert it in an older Compaq Notebook from ca 2011 with Intel core I3 M370 cpu)

Suse 42.1 and 42.2 boot and run extremely slow (boot takes some minutes), show graphic problems (mouse pointer traces), and behave quite instable. Not better on my other machines.

Debian 8.6.0 can be installed, but crashes completly after short time (probably graphic problems).

(interesting: the same USB-SD-card that crashes in the NUC starts and runs perfectly when I insert it in an older Compaq Notebook from ca 2011 with Intel core I3 M370 cpu)

Fedora 25 runs well and uses all 4 cores.

PROBLEMS:

The system worked well for several months, sometimes I used the Ubuntu-stick, sometimes Fedora.

The problems started in June 2017 when the system began refusing to boot, no matter if an OS-USB-stick was installed or not. Sometimes, I could reanimate it by temporarily disconnecting it from power and repeat the boot attempt. Things deteriorated, and then the system crashed with frozen and distorted screen (content mixed with green pixels). The NUC could not be started again.

I drove to the vendor, gave him the complete NUC package as I bought it (blue box, power supply, Vesa-bracket, no RAM), and they sent it to an Intel Service Station. 4 weeks later I received a new NUC with the comment that the old one couldn't be repaired, however, I got it without power supply, bracket, etc. After a short mudwrestling, the vendor opened another NUC-box from the shelf and handed me the missing parts. Back home again I installed the RAM and this time an SSD-harddrive WD Green 120GB Sata 2.5.

Then I booted the NUC and entered setup (F2): RAM and SSD had been recognized and I made only 3 changes: Boot USB Devices First (active), OS-Selection (Linux), Supervisor-PW.

I saved the changes, booted again to see if the changes were active, and everything was fine.

Then I shut down the NUC and disconnected it from AC-mains. Some hours later, I plugged it in again, this time with the DVD-drive in the lower front USB-port - and nothing happened: all devices dead: keyboard dark, mouse without light, dark screen, no noises/signs from DVD-drive, no boot, just the power lamp and fan were active.

The next days I tried all tricks to get the new NUC back to life: BIOS-jumper, power-button-menu, AC-disconnection. After many attempts it suddenly started and I updated the BIOS from version 57 to the latest version 62.

I started the NUC again, without any drive, just to look into the BIOS-setup. I could enter it with F2, the BIOS was updated, and the 3 old changes were still in place - and then out of the sudden the BIOS-screen froze with distorted content and green pixels again. Could not leave the BIOS properly, just power down. Boot is not possible anymore, tried again all tricks, this time I even disconnected the battery (tried it 3 times, waited ca 3 minutes), no improvement, just power lamp and fan become active. So, the life of the 2nd NUC was quite short!

QUESTIONS, COMMENTS, AND SUGGESTIONS:

1) Is there anything more I can try? (besides BIOS-jumper, battery connect/disconnect, power-button-menu, AC-connect/disconnect)?

2) Can the problems be caused by disconnection from AC-mains? (even the 1st NUC had boot problems when I left it disconnected for some weeks)

3) Can the NUC be permanently damaged when the user plugs devices, that draw more current than a normal memory-stick, in the 3 weak USB-ports? (the DVD-drive starts immediately running when I plug it into the upper/charge port, but stays quite when I plug it into one of the other USB-ports). No hint in the documentation. I used Kingston-readers with the first NUC even in the weak USB-ports, and saw that those readers got hot under operation (means: they draw some current).

4) When Intel makes the next redesign of the NUC-boards, please, locate the battery connector on the component side (where the RAM is), so that the customers don't need to disassemble the whole device when they try to reanimate a crashed NUC.

5) I don't like to drive back to the innocent vendor and have long/angry discussions (they would probably throw the NUC away like the 1st one and maybe send me a new, but what's the benefit? I have no reason to believe that the 3rd NUC would work better than the others. And then, what? Complain-and-warranty-loop until the end of the warranty-period is reached?). Hence, I would prefer to send it directly to the responsible Intel-NUC-development/quality department so that the engineers can analyse it and learn from this case (and send me a new and improved NUC later on, maybe next year). Is that OK for Intel? Can Intel give me the correct contact/shipping address, please?

6) Concerning the OS-installation issues above:

If an OS-USB-installation runs on an older machine (e.g. Compaq Notebook from ca 2011 with Intel core I3 M370 cpu), is there any BIOS-configuration possible that makes the NUC compatible to the older Intel-computers? (Example: virtualization features that can be switched off).

Would be great to have compatibility switches in the BIOS (product suggestion).

Many thanks for Your response in advance.

Best regards,

Martin

NUC5CPYH won't scale properly

Hi everyone!

I have some NUCs with Windows 10, but with this model (NUC Kit NUC5CPYH)  i have some issues:

I have a product called "e-block", that basically are a set of softwares with activities for students, that works essentially like a old videogame (It work with 800x600), when i plug the NUC to a monitor through VGA it scale as it should be. But when i do it through HDMI, it just don't do it! it put the software in the middle of the screen (Adjust the output to 800x600, ignoring the real resolution or something).

I try:

  • Using the scale options in the Graphic Panel of Intel
  • Changing the settings on the 3D Menu
  • Using the shortcut while the software runs (Works, but when i close the software i re open it, it reset the configuration)
  • Updating or downgrading the driversl.

I want to find a solution without using the VGA Cable.

Please help!!!

NUC6CAYS - Random boot freeze

$

Hi,

I'm experiencing boot Issue with the NUC6CAYS + Ubuntu Server 16.04.02 LTS (kernel 4.8), Ubuntu Server 17.04 (kernel 4.10) and even with the UEFI USB Installer.

  • BIOS Version 0038 and 0040 tested
  • HDMI 2.0 Firmware fix.
  • Default values in bios except: eMMC is disabled + supervisor password set ( I tried without a supervisor set too). Also tried the UEFI OS Selection to Linux, same issue
  • ADATA SP550 SSD is installed inside

Here is the story:

  • First I installed Ubuntu Server 16.04.02 LTS with HWE Stack (Kernel 4.8), everything was working fine BUT I noticed that sometimes, after a reboot, my NUC was stuck on a black screen right after the GRUB Menu.

  • I decided to give Kernel 4.10 a try so I installed Ubuntu Server 17.04 (kernel 4.10) and nothing else except updates. I did a small script to restart the computer every 30 seconds or so and again, randomly, the NUC was not rebooting. I see the GRUB Menu with Ubuntu selected and after the 2 seconds timeout, screen go black and nothing more happen.

  • After hours and hours of debugging and trying to find what the problem was, I decided to use a brand new SSD (same model) that I had on hand.
    • Disconnected the power of the NUC
    • Replaced my SSD
    • Connected my Ubuntu Server 17.04 USB installer made with Rufus
    • Connected power
    • Started NUC
    • Pressed F10 on boot, selected my USB and displayed the GNU GRUB Menu where I selected * Install Ubuntu Server and.....the same issue occurred,  black screen and nothing!!
    • I restarted the computer and tried it again... this time the Ubuntu Server installer started correctly.
    1. Boot
    2. Wait for GRUB Menu (eMMC is disabled and ssd brand new, so the USB boot automatically)
    3. Press Enter to start installation
    4. If the installer start, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and do it again.
  • I did it again, and again, again, at least 30 times without any issue than, after many retries same problem, black screen and nothing!

It's totally Random and really seems to be a BIOS issue to me since this time. When the black screen happen, ctrl+alt+del do nothing. I have to long press the power button for about 5 seconds to power off the NUC.

I should have a brand new NUC6CAYH tomorrow to test if it's specific to my NUC or not, since I already have NIC issue with this one but I need it for development (NUC6CAYS - Ethernet Issue )

Tested with a brand new NUC6CAYH, a different 4GB Kingston memory module and a different brand SSD (PNY) - Same Issue

Procedure to reproduce the issue in this post: Re: NUC6CAYS - Random boot freeze and can be downloaded here: https://communities.intel.com/servlet/JiveServlet/download/485079-171358/RebootScript.md.zip

Thanks a lot for support

NUC6CAYH screen flickers /turns black

Hi!

I'm having some issues with my brand new NUC6CAYH: The screen will randomly turn completely black for a few seconds.

This happens almost every minute. The NUC is hooked up to a display via VGA (resolution: 1920x1080@60 Hz). I'm not experiencing the same issue when I'm using an HDMI display (different resolution and refresh rate).

I have Windows 10 installed with the latest updates. The BIOS version is AYAPLCEL.86A and I applied this HDMI firmware update: Download HDMI 2.0 Firmware Update Tool for Intel® NUC Kit NUC7i3BN, NUC7i5BN, NUC7i7BN, NUC6CAY .

I have also installed the latest graphics drivers (15.46.2.4729) but I got the same problems with the previous drivers.

Any workarounds? Thanks in advance!

PTT on Linux

So I am trying to encrypt my file system, ideally by LUKS, and one way to do this is using the TPM chip, but my NUC does not have one. I am looking to use PTT to store the key, but I am unsure of how to go about this. I have already gone into the BIOS to enable PTT, but I am kind of lost on how to continue. If anyone knows, any help would be greatly appreciated.

What wires are connecting the nuc7i5bnk motherboard to the case?

Hello all -

I am thinking of putting a nuc7i5bnk inside a different enclosure (lots of cooling, no worries!). I was wondering if it is as easy as some of the older NUCs where the assembly literally fell out of the case if unscrewed, or if there are wires/cables attached to things now. I see where the power button is on the side along with the audio jack and such. Do things need to be disconnected to remove the board from the case?

Thank you ahead of time for all your help!

Netflix audio problems

$

Hello,

I recently got myself a 7i3BNH and while it works fine the Netflix app does not. Netflix support pages suggest audio problems even though there is no specific fix for error U7361-1253-C00D6D60 which is the one I'm getting. After trying all their suggested fixes without success I thought I'd ask here if anyone has had a similar issue with their NUCs. What makes this error especially annoying is that a title will start to play and then after 5 to 15 mins fail.

Using the browser player works fine but then I loose 5.1 audio which is why I'm using the app in the first place.

I'm running W10 pro 64 on the machine. All drivers are up to date as of 170706 and the app has been reinstalled numerous times.

edit: I found this thread, Netflix, D34010WYK and 5.1 audio , but I want pass-through audio and considering that thread it three years old I kinda though the issue would be gone by now.

Edit 2: I get the same error with 2.0 audio but, and this makes me think it has more to do with Netflix than drivers, their own content seems to work fine. Total recall borks after a few minutes but okja ran fine for 1,5h until I turned it off.

Thanks!
