Centos 7 on NUC6CAYH

I just posted this question over at unix.stackexchange.com and thought I'd bring it to the attention of this community for input here or to benefit from any responses that may be contributed by the stackexchange users.

==== snip ====

I have a working Centos7 system on a NUC5CPYH. To get the drivers for video and wireless that aren't in the Centos 3.10 kernel, we're using a 4.10.9 kernel. Since the NUC5CPYH is coming up on end of life, I'm trying to migrate to the NUC6CAYH.

Our system plays video in Chrome. On the NUC5CPYH, everything runs fine. On the NUC6CAYH I'm seeing high CPU on gnome-shell which I found (atop "y" command) to have 4 threads of `llvmpipe-[0-3]` attached to gnome-shell's PID -- so we're using CPU (not GPU) rendering.

On the NUC6CAYH, glxinfo errors with message  `i965_dri.so does not support the 0x5a85 PCI ID` which looks to be a Mesa error message from `src/mesa/drivers/dri/i965/brw_device_info.c` Looking at `include/pci_ids/i965_pci_ids.h` the 5a85 PCI ID is not in the 11.2 (Centos 7 includes mesa 11.2.2-2.20160614.el7)  tree but is in the 12.0 and later.

It appears that we need a new version of Mesa. So the question is how do I do that?

- Is this analysis correct?

- Is there a better way to solve this problem?

- Intel has a nice "[recipe][1]" for a video stack, but it looks to be a daunting task to implement.

- Is there a packaged path for Centos 7 to get to Mesa 12+.

- Could this be as "simple" as building Mesa from source? I tried to build 12.0.6 and ran into a series of errors so it doesn't look so simple...

NUC BHN7i7BHN Optane no boot

My system:-  NUC7i7BHN – brand new – updated to latest bios….Bios 52

Hard drive OCZ Agility 3 SSD, 16GB ram.

Operating system windows 10pro.

System without Optane fully operational.

I downloaded the Optane drivers ready to install, installed the Optane card – and managed to boot – into main system (it took quite a long time to boot)all this on Bios 47. I then tried to install the drivers. This threw up an error no RST drivers installed – please uninstall optane and reinstall RST.

I then unistalled via windows – as you would expect to do. Re booted and installed RST – then went to install optane – it would not have it. I then rebooted – and from that point on my NUC will not boot with optane card installed –fineeto. The NUC just stops booting and hangs before NUC bios screen appears. I then updated to the lates Bios – no difference.

I have checked my drive seems to be formatted correctly – and shows GMP partitions etc.

I have tried cleaning windows via the windows clean routeen – no difference.

(I have deleted a full rant - directed at Intel - did see any point pointing it at hpefully a helpful community ;-)

Please help…..and advise if you can fnx

NUC6CAYS NIC dissapearing

Hello,

I have an issue with multiple NUC6CAYS NUC's.

I have 12 of those running as video playback devices.

Now I started to notice that in seemingly random intervals the NUC's completely lose their ethernet connectivity.

When checking the player it looks like the NIC just disappeared, it is nowhere to be found in the windows device manager or in the network adapter settings.

The only solutions I have found so far is turning off the device for approx. 10min. and restarting it. Normal reboots without the waiting period don't work.

Since these devices are deployed in a professional environment this is not a solution.

Hopefully there will be a solution for this soon.

NUC6CAYS not recognizing MSATA

Curious boot issue.  Went to re-image internal MSATA using bootable thumb drive with confirmed-good OPENELEC image/installer.  Installer thumb drive recognized presence of MSATA and successfully deployed image.  However, when I go into BIOS on NUC, it does not recognize presence of MSATA.  This is the case whether I set boot type to "Windows" or "Linux."

What settings/configuration/BIOS change to I need to make to get the system to recognize the re-imaged MSATA?

NUC7i5BNH Win 10 won't sleep

I just setup a NUC7i5BNH with Windows 10.   Everything is working fine except the computer will not go to sleep.  Even if I go to the windows menu and choose sleep in the Shutdown/Restart menu.  The computer will proceed to go to sleep but then go back to the sign in screen within seconds.   Power and Sleep in the control panel have been set to 5 minutes and 15 minutes respectively.   The screen never turns off in addition to the computer never gong to sleep.   I have made another non-admin account but the computer will neither go to screen save or sleep in this account either.   I have played around with powercfg but never see anything particular useful but I might not be using it correctly.

In device manager, I have set the wireless network adapter to never allow this device to wake the computer.   I still allow the computer to turn off the wireless to save power.  Even though I am using Wifi, I also turned off all the Wake on LAN options (Magic Packet, Pattern Match, Link Settings).

Not sure what else to do.   I have updated drivers from the intel website.  Although for some reason, I install the Ethernet Connection (4) I219-V driver seeming successfully but everytime I re-scan or go back to the website, its says that I still need to do the update.  Not sure if this is related.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Will Intel Be Releasing an 8th Gen Skull Canyon

Rumors abound on some websites.

With Apple refusing to refresh/update their Mac Mini, the Skull Canyon is looking very good.  However, will Intel be releasing a Coffee Lake version?

Intel is planning to expand new models to Skull Canyon line of performance based NUC compact desktops; with Intel Coffee Lake processors. Intel first launched its Skull Canyon NUC mini PC last year. The impressive hardware boasted a 6th Gen Core i7-6770HQ, M.2 support, and DDR4 RAM of up to 32GB.

So what can we expect?!  Because if Intel keeps the Skull Canyon at Skylake, people will have to check elsewhere.

correct switch from NUC to TV & put into sleep mode at ~80C

1. When  turn on the NUC (when the TV is running), it automatically switches to the video signal NUC,

but when  exit from Windows and turn off the NUC, there is no automatic return to show of TV: "There is no signal from the device ..."

return only through the TV remote: "Forced disconnection of Anynet + devices ..."

The settings in the TV are correct (automatic detection of Anynet devices, etc.).

Settingn in BIOS "Auto Turn Off TV" in any value except "default" leads to simultaneous switching off of TV together with NUC.

Samsung's support service said that the NUC does not send the appropriate signal when turning off.

What settings need to be made that in case of switching off of NUC there was an automatic return on show of TV?

2.

With a large load on the processor, for example: simultaneous opening of a lot of "heavy" Internet pages,  leads to an increase in the temperature

of the processor, as soon as it reaches ~ 77-80 C, there is an automatic transition to sleep mode (turning off the screen, stopping the execution of programs) .

Why is this related? After all, the maximum temperature is ~ 105 C, in addition there is throttling. Maybe there is some service in windows10 that does this?

Windows 7 on NUC5CPYH, USB2 ports not working

$

Hi,

I'm trying to install Windows 7 on NUC5CPYH. This NUC has USB2 ports (internal) - I connected my keyboard and mouse to these ports. They work in bios, however they stop working during Windows 7 installation.

I know about "Windows 7 USB 3.0 Creator Utility", but it's only required for "NUC products that have only USB 3.0 ports". I don't have second computer, so I'm unable to use this utility.

Is where any other way I can install Windows 7? Why USB2 ports stop working?

The problem with the CSS game, hangs when you exit the game

Good day to all! I have INTEL NUC Skull Canyon BOXNUC6I7KYK2, all games work well, except CSS. In the KSS on Steam I go without problems, I play without problems, but the game finished the game, when the game is over, the even screen and silence appear, not one key works except Enter, pressing Enter, there is again the entrance to the game of the CSK. And so to infinity, it helps only resets on the panel of the nettop itself. It's also impossible to collapse the game, the same dark screen. The rest of the games in Steams work without any complaints, and they come in and out as usual. What could be the reason? The drivers are the latest. Maybe you should update BIOS? Although what's it got to do with it, just some incompatibility of the software level. Once it turned out without problems, nothing hanging, and was able to turn off the game, but it was only once.

NUC7i3BNK screen flickering (1680x1050, 59 or 60hz)

Hi,

After purchasing a NUC7i3BNK for my aunt as a desktop replacement (only some light internet and office work) I installed the NUC on my LG IPS277l (1920x1080) via HDMI. No issues so far.

Unfortunately when installing the NUC at my aunt's screen (a Dell professional 2009W 20" screen with DVI-D and VGA connections) on the NUC's HDMI port with a HDMI to DVI cable the screen starts flickering in certain circumstances.

After some troubleshooting I noticed it only occurs so far on the 1680x1050 resolution (59 or 60hz doesn't make a difference) which is the recommended resolution for this screen. When setting the monitor to a lower resolution it doesn't occur so far.

I believe after reading the forum topics about screen flickering/dropouts that it is a driver related problem, since on other resolutions everything is ok so cables etc. should be fine.

I have already installed the most recent bios (0052) and updated the nuc to all the most recent drivers via the Intel Driver & Support Assistant. Then I tried the recommended older display driver in the main screen flickering topic (4771) and the HDMI 2.0 firmware update, but the flickering is still there.

(just to be clear, the screen stays ON all the time, it just glitches so no black screen on/off as reported with some 4k monitors)

I have uploaded a video of the problem:

Hope there is a solution for this problem, thank you in advance for looking into it.

NUC buzzing if separated from power line

$

Hello,

I have a NUC6CAYH. Everything works fine: connected to a ASUS Monitor by HDMI/DVI, usb wireless mouse and keyboard and to loudspeakers by 3.5 plug/cinch.

If I turn off the NUC and disconnect the power line I get an extremly loud buzzing from the loudspeakers. I cannot avoid this although I tried a noise filter betweeen the NUC and the loud speakers.

If I keep the power line connected everything is quite.

Does anybody have an idea for a workaround? Is it a failure of the NUC? In general or just mine?

I have so many pc's without any problem of this kind.

Best regards

Gerhard

Creators Update Fall 1709 + NUC7i7BNH = "display resolution not supported"

$

Hi,

I have been using my NUC7i7BNH for a while, running Win 10 Pro 1703 connected to reciver and TV with HDMI.

Yesterday I got a new harddrive (Samsung 960 EVO 256GB NVME) and did a clean install with a Win 10 Pro 1709 (Creators Update Fall) ISO.

After installation a few minutes went by, the screen flickers and then goes black. Try to restart but the TV just says “display resolution not supported”. Perform restore to an earlier system restore point (probably before the update/driver was installed). The display works again and everything is OK. But after a few minutes the same thing happens again. Unplug my Ethernet cable and do yet another restore. This time the machine is running considerably longer. Download the Intel drivers from my laptop and install them on the NUC from a USB-drive. When I get do the display driver (Intel® HD Graphics Driver for Windows® 10 for Intel® NUC Kit NUC7i3BN, NUC7i5BN, and NUC7i7BN Version: 15.46.05.4771 (Latest) Date: 9/11/2017 ) the same thing happens again – no display.

Then tries to connect the NUC to my PC monitor and it works perfectly. Do a few restarts, wait a while etc… Everything works. Then connect it to the TV again – no picture – “display resolution not supported”. (Note: I have tried to connect the NUC directly to the TV without passing the receiver, but it didn´t help).

Gave up and switched back to my old hard drive with 1703 and that of course worked. Is the Intel display driver not fully compatible with 1709 Creators update?

Hey there,

I slightly modded my NUC and I'd like to know, whether You can issue an update, which would allow cpu core multiplier and dynamic voltage offset of vCore on CPU? I have a massive temperature headroom, but no way to use it.

Thank You

Kind regards
