Skull Canyon fails to boot from time to time

$

I have one of the more annoying issues ever which would simply won't go away.

Some background first:

I'm using a Windows 10 x64 PC with BitLocker encryption backed by TPM.

In every 3-4 COLD boots at the beginning of the day i would get a message from windows at boot time that the TPM is unavailable, and because of that windows could not automatically DE-crypt my drive, and i should use the recovery key instead.

At this point more often than not, i cannot even do that because my keyboard isn't working until i disconnect the usb hub cable, and reconnect it.

At this point there is a simple work-around, to simply press CTRL-ALT-DELETE and perform a warm boot. The next boot ALWAYS work using the TPM which is available at this point. Notice i cannot reproduce the issue using warm boots.

In addition do note that i usually leave the machine completely unplugged for several hours / days to save power.

Sometimes the problem escalates to the point the BCD data is corrupted, and a manual repair is needed. But this is far more rare.

My boot settings are: Fastboot disabled , secureboot enabled, and TPM is active and used for BitLocker.

I'm using the latest available BIOS (49)

NUC6CAYS memory

Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade my NUC's memory. I installed a 4GB module but after turning on the NUC I don't get anything, not even the prompt to change the BIOS/Settings.

This happens both when I install it at the lower socket and when I install it in addition the the existing 2GB.

I'm attaching a picture of the memory module.

Can anyone tell me if this module is compatible or not?

Thanks,

Doron Mintz

NUC7I3BNK - Duel Display Woes

$

Hi All,

I bought two NUC7I3BNK as we've used the older NUC's without any issues and we love the form factor.

The problem I am experiencing is similar to other issues I've read on the forum but all of the suggested fixes have not worked for us.

I want to connect 2 x 1920 x 1080 displays to the NUC's. We have done this successfully on the previous NUC's with no problems using Adapter to VGA.

Configuration is as follows:

1 x display connected via HDMI -> VGA adapter (Amazon.com: StarTech.com HDMI to VGA Adapter – 1080p – 1920 x 1200 – Black – HDMI Converter – VGA to HDMI Monitor Adapte… )

1 x display connected via DisplayPort 1.2 -> VGA adapter (Amazon.com: StarTech.com USB-C to VGA Adapter – Thunderbolt 3 Compatible – USB C Adapter – USB Type C to VGA Dongle Conv… )

If I have only the HDMI port in use then there is no problem, as soon as I plug in the DisplayPort, both screens start flickering on and off not staying on longer than 2 seconds.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here? I know there are issues with 3 x 4K screens but this is standard 2 x 1920x1080 screens for office work.

Hardware spec is as follows:

1 x NUC7I3BNK.

1 x AD-SSDM2SU8001-128GB - ADATA SSD SU800 M.2 PCIE 2280 128GB 80MM 3D NAND

1 x AD-DDR4S-2133-4GB - Adata 4GB DDR4 2133 SO-DIMM Single Tray

1 x HDMI -> VGA adapter (Amazon.com: StarTech.com HDMI to VGA Adapter – 1080p – 1920 x 1200 – Black – HDMI Converter – VGA to HDMI Monitor Adapte… )

1 x DisplayPort 1.2 -> VGA adapter (Amazon.com: StarTech.com USB-C to VGA Adapter – Thunderbolt 3 Compatible – USB C Adapter – USB Type C to VGA Dongle Conv… )

My NUC5i7RYH goes blank for no reason and then does not power on

I've been using this Intel NUC for 2 years without any issues. This issue started 3 days ago.

The display suddenly goes blank. My monitor complains that there is no HDMI cable connected. The NUC's blue power button continues to stay on - I can hear the fan. The unit does not seem to be overheating. I cannot shut it down (by pressing the power button for a few seconds). I have to switch the power off manually. Once done, the NUC unit does not power back on for a few hours (over night).

Initially, I thought it was an issue with the memory, so I purchased a new one. However, I still have this issue after installing the new memory.

Few things off the top of my head.

1. The issue does not seem to be based on what application was being run when it happens.

2. The issue seems to happen after the computer is on for 8 to 10 hours. (It has always happened at night time)

3. After this happens, I am unable to restart the unit for quite a few hours. (It has always started up the next morning)

I've attached my system information based on the SSU.exe utility.  I'm happy to provide any other information if needed.

Thanks for your help.

Bluetooth Completely Missing on NUC6i7KYK After Disabling in Windows 10

OK, I think this may be a problem that may occur on other devices than the NUC6i7KYK in Windows 10.  I'm just observing this on the NUC6i7KYK.  I've turned off the Bluetooth Radio from the "Action Center" controls because I don't generally use the radio.  But after some time Windows decides that there is no Bluetooth hardware in the machine and will not recognize the hardware until it is re-enabled.  The problem is there is nowhere that I can find that I can re-enable the radio.  I have updated the Intel drivers for the Bluetooth (which install OK with no mention that Bluetooth does not exist).  Yet after...  Device manager shows nothing about a disabled piece of hardware nor will Windows see the radio if I use Settings -> Update & Security ->Troubleshoot -> Bluetooth (It says there is no radio).  I disabled Bluetooth in the BIOS, rebooted, checked everything in Windows, uninstalled the driver, rebooted and still see no piece of Bluetooth hardware.  Not sure how to get this active again.

NUC7i5BNH Win 10 won't sleep

I just setup a NUC7i5BNH with Windows 10.   Everything is working fine except the computer will not go to sleep.  Even if I go to the windows menu and choose sleep in the Shutdown/Restart menu.  The computer will proceed to go to sleep but then go back to the sign in screen within seconds.   Power and Sleep in the control panel have been set to 5 minutes and 15 minutes respectively.   The screen never turns off in addition to the computer never gong to sleep.   I have made another non-admin account but the computer will neither go to screen save or sleep in this account either.   I have played around with powercfg but never see anything particular useful but I might not be using it correctly.

In device manager, I have set the wireless network adapter to never allow this device to wake the computer.   I still allow the computer to turn off the wireless to save power.  Even though I am using Wifi, I also turned off all the Wake on LAN options (Magic Packet, Pattern Match, Link Settings).

Not sure what else to do.   I have updated drivers from the intel website.  Although for some reason, I install the Ethernet Connection (4) I219-V driver seeming successfully but everytime I re-scan or go back to the website, its says that I still need to do the update.  Not sure if this is related.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

NUC7i5BNK DSD over HDMI does not work

I've got an Intel NUC7i5BNK with Win10-64 connected to my Denon AVP-A1HDCI via HDMI. I can't seem to get it to stream DSD using Foobar2000 + WASAPI. DSD+PCM doesn't work either. No errors/no sound with DSD64 sources. I've got F2K configured properly for DSD. ASIO doesn't work either. My Denon does native DSD over HDMI fine from my OPPO so I know the Denon is capable.

NUC6i7KYK - NUC, Razer Core, Fall Windows 10 Update, Video Disconnect issue - makes sound like USB device disconnect/reconnect

$

I have the Skull Canyon NUC, Razer Core, GTX 1080 and just updated to the Windows 10 Fall Creators update.  As soon as I got back to the desktop after the update, I noticed as soon as I right clicked on the desktop, it sounded as if I had repeatedly connected and disconnected a USB device, as it kept making the connect/disconnect sound.  I initially thought it was a bad USB driver or something, so I disconnected everything but the Razer Core, but it still happened.  I then went to device manager, showed hidden devices and got rid of anything that wasn't being used and tried to re-install what I could, but still the same issue.

I then tried to check the display settings and when I went in there, I will usually see two displays as I have the Razer Core, with GTX 1080 as my primary display connected to it's own monitor and the onboard Intel 580 graphics card with a headless HDMI connector attached.  The display settings show the two displays, but after the Windows 10 update and what I thought was USB issues because of the connect/disconnect sound, it seems that the Intel 580 would be the device that actually disappears as in the display settings screen, the two monitor setup would appear and disappear along with the device disconnect/reconnect sound from the OS.  I removed the headless HDMI connector from the Intel 580, but that did nothing.

I then just disabled the Intel 580 graphics card in Device Manager and that seems to have solved the disconnect/reconnect issue, however, now I can't use my onboard graphics card, which has been an issue sometimes when the Razer Core has randomly disconnected for some reason.

Has anyone else had an issue like this?  And is there any possible fix with drivers and/or firmware for the NUC to solve this?  I'm running the latest drivers/firmware currently.

Any help is appreciated.

How do I improve Skull Canyon full screen video?

I just got my second Skull Canyon NUC, and I've been using it to run a 4k and two 2k screens 24/7 with video feeds. I've noticed some freezing on certain sites thou, and very high CPU usage, so I was wondering if there was a way to smooth this out? The machine does nothing else really, but I may put some VM's on it down the road.

NUC7i7BNH – 100Hz Refresh Rate at Lower Resolutions

$

Hi,

My monitor is an ultrawide Samsung C34F791, capable of 3440x1440 at 100 Hz via HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.2.

According to the specs, NUC7i7BNH is capable of outputting 4096x2304 at 60 Hz.

That’s great for 4K monitors! But what about higher refresh rates at lower resolutions?

- Does Iris Plus Graphics 650 support higher than 60 Hz refresh rate?

- Is HDMI 2.0 capable of 100 Hz refresh rate?

- Is Thunderbolt 3 (the USB-C port) capable of 100 Hz refresh rate?

Erez.

NUC5i3RYH fails to cold reboot with external USB 3.0 drives attached

$

I have an Intel NUC NUC5i3RYH that is having a peculiar problem. Here are the details.

Setup:

1. Intel NUC NUC5i3RYH

2. One Internal Seagate 1 TB Hard Drive - OS is installed on this.

3. 16 GB RAM - 8 x 2 GB SO-DIMM's - Crucial

4. Two External USB 3.0 WD 2.0 TB drives connected to Rear USB Ports. Both are data drives, no boot partitions on these. These are both WD's but two different models.

5. USB Mouse and Keyboard - Connected to front USB Ports

Symptoms: The system is working fine except when cold rebooted. After a cold reboot the NUC goes into an indefinite boot loop. I just see the NUC Logo and then it reboots after a few seconds. Cannot enter the BIOS since the F2, F7 etc message does not appear on the bottom right of the monitor. The keyboard and mouse are unresponsive.

Procedure to boot: Unplug both the external hard drives and reboot. The system proceeds to boot normally. Once booted, I can then plug in the two external drives and they appear to work fine. A warm reboot causes no problem and the system works properly and boots up just fine.

Things tried to resolve the issue: Tweaked all the BIOS settings like, UEFI Boot -> disable/enable, Watchdog -> disable/enable, USB xhci mode -> disable/enable and many other parameters as discussed throughout the forum. However the problem remains. I am running the latest BIOS as well. Version RYDBWi35.86A dated 1/18/2017.

Other Observations: Have tried powering up the external USB drives with a powered USB hub which has no effect, the system still goes into a boot loop. Also noticed that when the drives are attached the keyboard and mouse become unresponsive. It seems as the whole USB bus is hung till I remove the external USB drives. If I remove "both" the drives during the boot loop, I immediately get a message on screen saying that POST has failed and I could either press F2 to go into BIOS or F9 to continue. The keyboard and mouse come alive at this stage and I can press F2 to go into BIOS and start twiddling my thumbs . Last point, I did install this system using a 16GB Pen drive so apparently pen drives may be working after a cold reboot. I think the issue is with the two external drives plugged in.

Would appreciate if Intel support can look into this matter and provide a resolution. Would be happy to provide any more details as required.

INTEL NUCi7 3D MVC ISSUE

$

Coming from Intel NUC DN2820 I was able to play 3D MVC with Kodi with new Intel Media SDK, I just purchased Intel NUC NUC7i3BNK and 3D playback doesn't work.

On the Intel NUC DN2820, the resolution was set 1920X1080p 3D and everything works great

On the Intel NUC NUC7i3BNK either I set the 1920X1080p 3D or  3820X2160p 3D doesn't work

The Intel Media SDK was supposed to allow 3D MVC to work, I did some testing and found the HDMI 2.0 connection is the one causing the issue and any NUC with HDMI 2.0 doesn't work/

Issue with HDMI after latest BIOS update

$

I had my NUC connected to my AV Receiver since the day I purchased it and the receiver connected to a Samsung Plasma TV. Everything worked fine until I upgraded to the latest BIOS (version 0052)

Since the upgrade I cannot see an HDMI picture through my Onkyo TX-NR709 AV receiver, instead I see a jittery and totally garbled image (as if there is a frequency mismatch).

I tried the connecting my other PC to the receiver and it worked just fine. I also tried connecting the NUC directly to the TV HDMI port and that worked fine as well.

The interesting thing is that when I reboot the NUC it displays the Intel logo and the prompts to enter BIOS just fine, however the minute it moves to the operating System (Windows 10 64-bit Fall Creators Update) I lose the HDMI signal to garbage. The same does not happen with other Windows PCs that I have at home so this is for sure something to do with the NUC.

I found a reference to a HDMI 2.0 Firmware update for the NUC however I am not sure that will do any damage to my NUC and also not sure if it will make any difference since my receiver is HDMI 1.4 and not 2.0.

Any suggestions welcome.

Regards,

Tareq

NUC6CAYH randomly freezes

$

There are a few threads here on this forum regarding NUC6CAYH becoming unreachable over the network after certain amount of time.

Initially I thought that it's a LAN card issue but then I decided to run a crontab script every 5 minute:

*/5 * * * * ~/just-logging-timestamp.sh >> ~/timestamp.log

So after running the above script it turned out that when the NUC is unreachable over the network, it's in fact frozen, because the timestamp script is not logging anything.

After I restart the NUC from the power wall, I can login again over SSH and I can see that the logs are missing for the time period when the NUC was unreachable.

I'm currently using BIOS 38, and I can upgrade to 41 although I don't see anything related to my issue in the changelog. Obviously even if I update the BIOS it will take some time before I can report back with the results.

Here is the overview of the timestamp script log so far:

- YYYY-MM-DD

- 2017-10-27 - froze

- 2017-10-18 - froze

- 2017-10-02 - manual restart (other reasons)

- 2017-09-30 - manual restart (other reasons)

- 2017-09-24 - froze

- 2017-09-02 - froze

- ????-??-?? - start timestamp script

The NUC is running 24/7 with Debian Stretch, and I can confirm that it's not OS related because I had other Linux OS'es before that and occasionally I had the same issue, although at the time I was thinking that it's a LAN card issue.
