HDMI CEC Problem: Turning on NUC when TV is turned on isn't working

Hi there,

This issue is pretty similar to this one, but I was encouraged to create a separate thread. My problem is with NUC7i3BNK, BIOS version v65 (latest as of this writing). I realize there is "Fixed CEC not working correctly" line in the release notes for v65 BIOS, but it didn't fix the issue for me, unfortunately. NUC successfully suspends after turning off the TV, but it can't wake up when it's on. It wakes up from USB keyboard ok, however. Here is the information on my device:

Does NUC6CAYH support one memory card 8 GB?

$

Hello. I just bought NUC6CAYH. I installed one memory card 8GB (8 chips on each side = density 4 Gb) in lowest socket, closest to the mainboard, also tried other socket - power led is solid, but there is no image on monitor via hdmi or vga.

If I took off memory card - power led is blink 3 times in a row - also no image.

in specs "Support for up to 8 GB of system memory with two SO-DIMMs" - so I should use 2 cards with 4GB to make 8GB total, not one card with 8 GB?

NUC6CAYH doesn't support one memory card 8GB?

Nuc6cayh not supporting hd audio 192/24

Just got this barebones Nuc and put a 120gb ssd and 8gb of ram in.  I'm running Windows 10. I am using it as a music player with an ethernet connection to my pc in another room with all my music files.  I have it connected to my Marantz 1608 via hdmi.  I use JRiver Media Center to play my music from my server through the Nuc to the Marantz receiver.

I don't know which is responsible for the issue (The Nuc hardware, Windows, or JRiver).  Here's the issue.

I tried to play a flac file at 192/24 hd audio in JRiver.  In JRiver, I've chosen to play through my Marantz using Wasapi direct connection.  When playing I see it downsampled to 192/16 with a message that there aren't enough bits for the selected output (it recognizes that it is coming in at 192/24).  I know the Marantz can handle 19/24 - it has done so via hdmi and ethernet to my Oppo 103 blue ray player without any problems.

Here's the other odd thing - I ordered this same model Nuc preloaded with the JRiver software and running Linux from the JRiver people.  I am returning it because I just don't understand Linux and want a Windows environment.  While I had it I played my 192/24 files through ALSA to the Marantz with no issues whatsoever (it even padded the bit depth to 32).

So I'm wondering where the problem is.  I think I have all the latest drivers for everything (I just updated the graphics driver to the newest Intel HD graphic driver for the 500 model on my Nuc).

In windows it says the Marantz is selected and supports all samples up to 192 and bit depths of 16 and 24.  However, I don't see a way to select any of these.  While searching around the net I kept seeing this same screen but with checkboxes by the sample rates and bit depths for the user to choose - I have no such options.  They are just listed as "supported".

I don't know what else to check.

Is this a Nuc/Intel hardware issue or a Windows 10 issue?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Intel NUC Kit NUC7PJYH USB 3.0 Disconnection Problem

I purchased Intel NUC Kit NUC7PJYH with Intel Pentium® Silver J5005 Processor and I'm experiencing problems using USB 3.0 with Mediasonic ProBox 4 Bay 3.5' SATA HDD Enclosure – USB 3.0 & eSATA (HF2-SU3S2) Link: Mediasonic .The problem is the constant disconnection. Even my external Seagate 4TB backup PLUS (have own power supply) disconnects, different 3.0 cables. I confirmed this because I have Threadripper PC and my External Seagate 4TB doesn't disconnects.

It disconnects when doing large file transfers (gigabit speeds) and when using Plex. Now I'm using USB 2.0 extension cable and it doesn't disconnects but my speed is slow (USB 2.0). Is there a driver fix for this USB 3.0 bug? I tried all the ports in the intel nuc all have same symptoms. Hope Intel fix this.

NUC8i7HVK: Replacement Power Supply/Brick/Adapter?

So, I just ordered an NUC8i7HVK, and would like a second power brick to save lugging it around all the time (home<-->office)...

No love at Intel® NUC Spare Parts yet :-(

From review pics I see the NUC comes with a Lite-On brand power supply, model "PA-1231-12".

The Technical Product Specification states that's a 19.5v/11.8A (230w) power supply with a DC "barrel" style plug having 7.4mm/OD 5.0mm/ID shell (ground) and inner 0.8mm (19.5v) contact.

So, the question then becomes, where to get one?

I can't find anyone selling identical Lite-On power supplies directly online?

There seem to be a variety of laptops using similar power supplies. It's worth noting that Lenovo uses a "PA-1231-12LA" (note the additional "LA" on the end) model with an incompatible square plug.

Interestingly, the tech spec also states:

The kit has a power sensing circuit that Manages CPU power usage to maintain system power consumption below 230 W. It is recommended that you disable this feature (via BIOS option) when using an AC-DC adapter greater than 230 W.

Which makes me wonder if trying to find one of the 280w power supplies MSI specs for their gaming laptops might yield a performance increase (at least for a burst until you hit the TDP wall)?

Anyhow, searching Amazon yields an HP branded one ("HSTNN-LA12"), and one from Delippo, so I'm wondering if I should give one of those a shot?  I just want something reliable that won't fry my NUC, but the marketplace for these things sure is sketchy :-(

NUC8i7HVK Bios v44 removes TPM and breaks BitLocker

Hi Intel,

I upgraded the bios on my NUC8i7HVK to:  [HNKBLi70.86A] v44 [HN0044.BIO]

After the update Windows BitLocker broke and the BitLocker manager menu could not find TPM.  I fished around the Intel Visual Bios menu in v44 but could not locate the TPM settings.  Downgrading back to Bios v40 fixed this (windows found TPM and BitLocker worked again).

Performance problem with Samsung 970 Pro on NUC7i7DNKE

Hi,

Just bought an Intel NUC7i7DNKE & Samsung 970 Pro 512GB NVMe SSD.

I'm not getting the advertised seq. read performance of 3,500MB/s... fastest that I can achieve is 1.8GB/s (about 50% of the performance)

Installed Windows 10 Home (fully updated)

Updated Bios of NUC to latest version 047

Installed Samsung NVMe driver

SSD came already delivered with latest firmware

M.2 slot seems to be using PCIe 3.0 using 4 lanes (displayed in BIOS & Samsung Magician)

Any idea what might be wrong with the system? (I also tried Linux, same problem -> max throughput 1.8GB/s)

Cheers,

Werner

NUC8i7HVK - What is the best fan control settings?

$

Hey guys, just got my Hades Canyon yesterday and I find some werid behaviour about the fan and temperature.

For example, when it's on idle state, the fan is very quiet that I barely can hear. but as soon as I open a software or even open a folder, the fan kicks in and it's very audible.

I open up XTU and find out the CPU temperature would go stright up to 70C - 80C, and drop down to normal temp(40C-50C) rapidly. So the CPU basiclly jump up and down in a large range.

I checked the default cooling options in BIOS, find that minimum temp is about 60 (can't remember exact number), so everytime the cpu goes up above that temp, the fan would kick in with high speed. Is there any time-based options for fan setting? for example if the CPU temp goes above 60C, can I set the fan to speed up only if the CPU temp stays above 60C for 5 seconds or 10 seconds, so the fan won't speed up unnecessarily?

I know for now the best solution may be change the minimum temperature to about 70-80C to avoid some fan kicking in, but a time-based settings would be cool.

anyone can share some good cooling settings for Hades Canyon? thanks

NUC8i7HVK - "A bootable device has not been detected." despite SSD inserted and OS installed

Hi,

I've set up my Hades Canyon and was able to on first boot get Win 10 installed, added all the drivers, rebooted a couple times along the way. Didn't touch any BIOS settings, just wanted to get everything installed first before tweaking anything. I left the system off and went to boot it the next day and saw the message "A bootable device has not been detected."

I promptly went into BIOS and my Intel 760p SSD was no longer showing in the PCIe devices list. I had installed it into SSD Slot A. At this point I was on BIOS *.0029.*, so I went to see if a newer BIOS had been relased. *.0040.* was available so I installed that. System still refused to detect the installed SSD.

Only after unplugging and reinstalling the SSD, into either slot A or B, does it boot from SSD. But if I dare power down and attempt to restart, I'm stuck with the bootable device not detected message until the next time I manually intervene and reseat the SSD. I've installed SODIMMs and m.2 SSDs in the past and was sure to seat the device pins properly. I'm running out of ideas here! I've even cleared CMOS via the BIOS_SEC jumper inside the case.

I'm very confused because this isn't a total failure, as I was clearly able to make use of the SSD up until it quits being detected. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

A possible solution to the HD audio issues in LPSCON interface

$

Hi All:

I experienced the following issues in my NUC6CAYH, lack of support for DTS-HD-MA and other HBR audio file formats, lack of support for PCM audio at 192/24 encoding, applying the latest firmware and drivers limited the gizmo to 96/24 audio, etc.

After some proofs I discovered a couple of things:

If you start playing HBR audio and then turn off the TV or monitor, my receiver started to bitstream audio at 192/24 effortlessly, even the so-called HBR file formats. The receiver correctly detected the HBR formats and worked ok.

If I turned on the screen (a Samsung 4K Smart TV), the sound went mute. Turning off the TV allowed to recover the audio.

I suspected either a bandwidth issue with the HDMI 2.0 LPSCON implementation or a case of just awful driver implementation.

Then I tried to use the ASIO4ALL drivers, which are sort of a universal ASIO solution for sound devices that do not come with a manufacturer supplied ASIO driver. It enables the audio software to get direct access to the hardware, bypassing all the WDM stuff in between.

And guess what?

Using the ASIO4ALL drivers, I can play audio at 192/24, even multichannel audio (8 channels). The problem with this approach is that the audio decoding is being done in the NUC's CPU, so in Task Manager I could see CPU loads of up to 70% when decoding a 6 channel SACD ISO file.

The receiver gets LPCM audio up to 192/24 in 8 channels.

So, I defaulted the audio software player to use the ASIO4ALL drivers and decided to waste no more time trying to make WASAPI work (I'm using Jriver MediaCenter 23).

By the way, I'm using the latest Intel drivers, which are limited to 96/24 audio. The ASIO4ALL drivers don't seem to care about this, playing audio at 192/24 just fine, although with heavy CPU load.

So, here goes a question to the Intel guys: Is this a hardware limitation or a software driver limitation? How is it possible that using a third party supplied ASIO drivers enables the NUC to do things that seem impossible with the Intel-native drivers?

By the way. I also discovered that the problem with HBR audio decoding is due to the poor ARC implementation in the Samsung Tizen 4k TVs. The ARC signal can be received by the TV as either PCM or bitstream, but the return audio signal can be only PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS or Dolby Digital +.

I guess that is why HBR encoded files play flawlessly if I turn off the TV: HDMI audio no longer uses ARC, it starts being decoded by the receiver.

The only alternative that I found is to use an HDMI audio extractor and splitter called HD Fury. This splitter detects the EDID info of each device that it is connected to and delivers what the device requires. Nice, but at 150 USD it seems to be a bit too expensive way to solve the 130 USD NUC's problem.

Since I use the NUC mostly for audio, I can also leave the TV turned off and control the Jriver Media Center software via its web server or it's Android app and get HBR support via WASAPI. But this is somewhat cumbersome.

So, I suppose that the life expectancy of my NUC will be reduced by the heavy CPU load while playing multichannel HD audio, but at least I can still use the darn thing.

Go figure.....

NUC8i7HVK - Error: BIOS has detected unsuccessful post attempt(s)

Hello together,

my name is Oli from Germany and I have recently purchased a NUC8i7HVK. I use it with a Samsung 970 Pro and a 960 Evo and 2x 16GB Crucial Ballistix Sport 2400 (BLS16G4S240FSD).

I also have a Skull Canyon for about 2 years now and I was so convinced of it that I thought, I need the successor now.

I have installed Win10 Pro and everything seems to work so far, except for one thing that I have not gotten fixed yet.

Every time I reboot the NUC, the Intel NUC-startup-screen appears for a short time, then it turns off completely (lights off) and immediately comes back again to the NUC-screen, followed by a message:

"Error: BIOS has detected unsuccessful post attempt(s). Possible causes include recent changes to BIOS. Performance Options or recent hardware change. Press Y to enter Setup or N to cancel and attempt to boot with previous settings"

I haven't done any changes, but the message appears anyway. If I then press N or either Y and go to the BIOS and save, it starts again 1x normally. The whole thing does not occur on complete shutdown and manually switch on again, but as I said only with reboot. Although I can disable the message with the help of "Disable Failsafe Watchdog" in BIOS-settings, but the "double" reboot with 2x NUC startup-screen and short off in between, still remains. I also have tried different BIOS-versions, but it's still the same. I would be glad if someone could tell me if this behavior is known or what I could still try to do about it or if it could possibly be a malfunction.

Thanks in advance

Oli

GPU throttling on NUC8i7HVK

I am seeing GPU throttling in games, e.g. Destiny 2. On a cold boot, I get 60 FPS options for 1440p and down. Which is fine. And actually remarkable for this tiny computer.

If you play a while, and quit. And re-start, I notice the game defaults to 30 FPS, which is not acceptable.

I have Ballistix 32GB RAM (at 2666 enabled via XMP). And 512GB Saming 970 Pro nVMe. No overclocking has been done on CPU, I tried GPU, but I get a crash almost immediately. All I need is 60FPS, and I'm happy. Which is achievable without OCing.

Please help. I like the box, and would love to keep it if I can maintain the frame rates.

intel nuc7i3BNH no HDMI video or not audio on USBc

Hi all.

I am having a problem since I installed this NUC. It is running Windows 10, since the first boot it sometimes shows video through HDMI connector and some other times it doesn't.

I have updated to lastes BIOS, video and monitor drivers with no result. I bought a new HDMI cable and tried with some other I had near by.

Always same result, sometimes it boot fine and some other it doesn't shows any video. I have tried as well with an old NUC with miniHDMI connector and it works always, even when it boots without video I change cables to that other NUC and works.

Then I bought a USBc-HDMI cable and now things changed: I have video in POST boot but no video on Windows login screen. I detach and reattch USBc cable and video shows. BUT, with no sound on windows.

I have resintalled again Video and audio drivers, and some other pieces (Network, WIFI, SGX, everityng I found on Intel web).

Monitor is AOC E2275PWJ, and I have installed this driver as well. I have played around with some BIOS settings, like enabling HDMI CEC and setting default display port to USBc.

No results. As a resume:

- When connected to HDMI I have no video at all most of the times. I have to poweroff and power on until it shows video.

- when connected to USBc I have no video on windows login, I have to reattach USBc cable. No audio in this case.

thanks

No video output on Startech Thunderbolt Dock

No luck with 18.5.1.

Moving my 4K TV from the rear HDMI to my Thunderbolt dock results in a black screen, as before.

Returning the TV to the NUC's rear HDMI and instead plugging in my old 1080 monitor to the dock as a second display shows it being detected in Display Settings, with the proper resolution, as before, but now instead of just sitting there blank, it says "no signal" and goes to sleep. If I unplug and replug the entire dock, then the connected display comes up as only 640x480 instead of 1080, and remains asleep. Powering the display off and on again results in it the disconnect sound and reconnect sound followed by it being shown in display settings, with the proper resolution again, but then still displaying no signal and returning to sleep.

LED issues

I've got problems with the LED's not turning off after (what I think is a) Windows 10 Pro Auto Sleep feature, its not all LED's either, Front LED 1 and 2 works as expected, but the rest (Power Button, Skull, Eyes and Front LED 3) gets stuck in the last configured state after this happens, after installing the latest BIOS, with some hassle by underclocking the RAM, an hard power reset (unplugging the power) seems to solve this issue and its also the only thing that solves it, even though it's pretty annoying when it happens. Does anyone else have this? The Windows LED configure tool think it changes the LED's but nothing happens with the mentioned LED's, changing Front LED 1 & 2 works however. Even if I try to sleep, hibernate or shut down the device completely from Windows the LED's are still on after this happens.

Also, is is normal that the chassis seems to have a small gap that makes the led create a stripe of light underneath the unit like this?
