Correct way to update BIOS

$

I've read a couple of times on this forum that the correct way to update a BIOS is by avoiding jumps between versions,

here: https://communities.intel.com/thread/51162

and here:https://communities.intel.com/thread/52658

Too bad that I didn't read that in the official documentation, because on my NUC 2820 I've been updating from v. 15 to v. 34 in one single step, and now I'm wondering whether the freezings (and many other problems...) that I'm experiencing are caused by that procedure.

In this case, which is the best way to roll back? Should I go from v. 34 to v. 32 to v. 28 and on and on? And then up again... Or could I just go down directly to v. 21 or even v. 15?

Thanks for your help!

Can't access Bios via F2 or Bios Flash via F7, blank screen

Hello,

i have problems with my new Intel NUC5i3RYK.

I have installed OpenElec and it works without problems. Also installing was no problem. However to setup IR and stuff I would like to access the Bios. Whenever I try to do that, I get a blank screen.

I hit F2 after turning the Nuc on and the screen stays blank, Strg Alt Del reboots the Nuc. The same happens when I try to access Bios flash via F7.

According to this site: Intel® NUC Boards and Kits — Cannot Access BIOS Setup with F2 Key the Bios should be visible on a FullHD TV (mine is a Panasonic 55VTW60).

I tried diffferent HDMI ports and accessing without any additional stuff plugged into the USB ports, no difference.

Any idea what could be the problem?

how to re-enable USB ports

after applying latest windows drivers, the usb stopped working,

so I played with settings in the BIOS, but [stupid me] I set all 3 ports to not-detect

I now cannot go into the BIOS as the keyboard is not detected in boot

I did a BIOS recovery downgrade to previous version,

but the USB keyboard still doesn't work

I just installed the 1/15/15 USB 3.0 driver update for my NUC D34010WYK.  Upon rebooting none of the USB ports are operational.  Without a working mouse or keyboard I can not rollback to the previous restore point.  Does anyone have a suggestion other than reinstalling the Windows 7 x64 that came with the unit?  Thanks for any help that you can provide.

Intel NUC DC3217IYE no video output after bootup

I have an Intel NUC DC3127IYE with Windows 8.1. I have it attached to a Dell monitor with an HDMI to DVI cable, and it has been working perfectly OK for over a year. I went on vacation for two weeks and when I came back I found that the video signal would not return to the monitor no matter how many keys I pressed or if I moved my mouse. I thought Windows might have frozen or something so I powered it off and back on. Since then I can see video output during the initial boot (initial Intel boot splash screen, prompt to press F2 to enter BIOS, I can even enter BIOS and have video output there just fine, and I even see the "spinning dots" indicating that Windows is loading), but when Windows comes up there's no more signal and the monitor enters into power save mode (as it usually happened after a period of inactivity).

I went in through a remote desktop session and I updated the video driver to the latest version (obtained from Intel® Download Center):

Pnw317L.png

When I updated the driver the signal came back. However after I rebooted the NUC I had the same problem again. The only way to get the video signal to come back is to go into the Device Manager through remote desktop and disable/enable the video driver. Once the video signal is back the monitor can go into power save mode and I can restore it by moving the mouse or pressing a key. But if I reboot, it's the same all over again... I'm at a loss. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Firstly forgive me if this has been covered before;

We have several Nucs running fine with the exception of two D54250WYK kits we are evaluating.

One with RedHat 7 Desktop and the other with Windows 7pro

All worked well for the first week or so, but on re-booting either system an error message pops up

Image autherization fail

System cannot boot to this device due to a security violation

Press enter to continue

Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated

Many thanks

Help with Installing Windows 7

Hi all

I've just bought a new Intel NUC D34010WYKH kit and I'm having major problems installing Windows 7.  I have a genuine boxed retail copy of Home Premium and downloaded the ISO file for it direct from Microsoft.  I created a bootable USB Drive using Bootcamp on my Mac.  I upgraded the BIOS on the NUC before doing anything else.  The HDD I'm using is a 120gb SSD which I got from a friend, this still has Windows 8 on it and I can boot the NUC directly into Widows 8 fine.  I checked the installation instructions here on the Intel website and the options it shows just aren't there on my BIOS.

According to the instructions on : Intel® NUC — Operating System Installation

For Windows 7 I need to select it on the Boot Configuration Menu but I don't have a Windows 7 tick box:

BIOS.jpg

When I try to install from the USB drive I simply get a black screen, nothing else.  I've left it for about 5 minutes and nothing happened.  I've also got an external DVD drive so I plugged that in and tried from the Windows 7 DVD.  I got further with this method but when I get to the language selection screen the wired keyboard and mouse just completely stop working.

Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated as I'm tearing what little is left of my hair out here.

Thanks in advance, Ric.

NUC 5i5RYH fails to boot with Kingston HyperX Impact 16GB/2133 memory kit (HX321LS11IB2K2/16)

I have a NUC 5i5RYH and it fails to boot using the default memory settings.   The modules are Kingston HyperX Impact 2x8GB/2133 (HX321LS11IB2K2/16).

It appears I force the ram down to 1866 but there is no way to make sure I have the right settings.

Will there be a BIOS update to either handle this RAM (the 1866 module was reviewed on many sites with the NUC 5i5RYK) or let me select from a list of XMP settings?

NUC N2820 and Samsung M9T 2TB 9.5mm SATA 2.5

I have just bought the NUC N2820 from ebuyer.com and found that the disc I bought to go alongside it was not compatible as its thicker than the 9.5mm restriction

Has anybody tried to connect the Samsung M9T 2TB drive to the N2820 with success ?, i'm confident it will fit but am not 100% sure this drive doesn't use a higher speed sata connection that the N2820 can handle

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to have to return another drive as I was lucky that ebuyer did not specify a required size of drive and have therefore accepted the return

Thanks

4 1080p Monitors off of 1 NUC. MST DP1.2 x3 + HDMI x1 --- Is it possible?

Hello, my company is looking to create a NOC solution using 2x intel NUCs to power 8x 1080p monitors.

The model we are looking at is:

Mini PC - Intel® NUC Kit D54250WYK

However if there is another model which supports HD5000 and Vpro that would be preferable.

What I am unsure on is whether we can run 3x monitors over an MST hub and then 1x monitor over HDMI? with intel HD5000 on the NUC
I cant find a solid answer for this online, would anyone be able to confirm or advise. I know 3 monitors is possible.

If this is not possible, would anyone offer a solution?

Thanks.

NUC5I5MYHE and M.2 compatibility

I just picked up a NUC5I5MYHE, and tried to install a Samsung XP941 M.2 drive.  But, the drive seemed to be physically incompatible -- the notch is off by a mil or two.  The very same drive installed perfectly in a NUC5I5RYK, however.

Has anyone run into a similar issue?

NUC5i5RYH won't boot - power button light blinks 3 times, pauses, blinks 3 times, pauses...

Hello,

I have submitted a support request to Intel for this.  I have a new NUC5i5RYH for which I ordered and installed CT2KIT51264BF160BJ (8GB Kit (4GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM, DDR3 PC3-12800 memory module) as well as a SSDSC2BP240G4R5 (Intel® SSD 730 Series - 240GB, 2.5in SATA 6Gb/s, 20nm, MLC).  Right from the start, I was getting the issue where the power button light blinks 3 times, pauses, blinks 3 times, pauses, and repeats.  Occasionally the hard drive light would come on.  Eventually I would be able to get it to boot (by removing and reconnecting the power connection, pressing the power button over and over, that sort of thing) but then I would get the message saying:

BIOS has detected unsuccessful post attempt(s).

Possible causes include recent changes to BIOS

Performance Options or recent hardware change.

Press 'Y' to enter Setup or 'N' to cancel and attempt to boot with the previous settings.

Pressing ‘N’ would get me back to three blink state with the same difficulty in booting.  Pressing ‘Y’ got me into setup where I tried various things (including re-flashing the BIOS from the latest available on the Intel NUC support site – successfully completed that twice) but everything I tried would lead me back to the same three blink state with difficulty in booting.  According to the documentation online, the 3 blink state indicates a memory problem.  According to Intel's support link (http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-034982.htm), my memory should be compatible with the NUC5i5RYH.  Furthermore, when in setup, I can see that the memory is recognized (as is the SSD). So I really don’t have any confidence that the problem is actually with the memory.  I have now gotten to the point where I cannot get the NUC to boot at all (nothing on the display, mouse won’t light up, keyboard won’t light up) – all I get is the aforementioned 3 blink state.  I have read online support tips on the Intel site as well as on this forum. I have tried six ways to Sunday via memory installation permutations (swapping the memory unit positions, trying just one unit in the bottom slot, trying just one unit in the top slot, trying the other unit alone in each slot – all of that sort of thing) to get past the 3 blink state and at least back to where I get the above referenced “BIOS has detected unsuccessful post attempt(s)” message; and the only change in behavior I observe is if I try booting with just one memory unit installed in the bottom slot.  In that scenario, I get a constant on light on the power button rather than the 3 blink pattern (but still get nothing on the display, mouse won’t light up, keyboard won’t light up).  Time to send in for an exchange?  If so, what?  Just the memory?  Just the NUC?  Everything?

Thanks,

Bill Bartol

Swapping disks betwwen NUCs doesn't work - UEFI issue?

$

I'm trying to come up with a Linux disk image that I can duplicate onto multiple disks and put into DN2820FYKHs.

Unfortunately when I swap a disk with the first stage of an Ubuntu 14.04 install into another chassis I get the message

"Reboot and Select proper Boot device.

or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a Key"

which is the same message I get with a blank disk.  It boots successfully in the chassis that the install was done on.

Both chassis' are the same, 0047 BIOS, although on was shipped with 0015 and the other was shipped with 0032.

It seems like something about the chassis must be stored in the boot image, or something about the boot image must be stored in the chassis.

I did a hex dump of the boot images and can't find the chassis UUID in it.  The only significant differences up to the first partition are the UUID/GUIDs and the CRCs that wrap them.

It looks like UEFI is choosing to not boot from the disk.  Is it possible to get debugging output from UEFI that will tell me what it thinks is wrong?

Has anyone else seen this problem?

Broardwell NUC CIR receiver issue

Hi

I have just bought my first Intel NUC the NUC5I3RYK to be specific. But i have unfortunately found out that the ir receiver aren't working out of the box. I have tried with Openelec 5.0.

I have tried updating the firmware and tried the following fix that seemed to work on haswell NUC but without any luck.

Re: Haswell NUC CIR receiver (ACPI issue?)

when I ssh into my NUC and type the dmesg i get the following text:

[ 3016.364580] nuvoton-cir 00:01: [io 0x03e0-0x03e7]

[ 3016.364625] nuvoton-cir 00:01: [irq 10]

[ 3016.364628] nuvoton-cir 00:01: [io 0x03f0-0x03f7]

[ 3016.365146] nuvoton-cir 00:01: activated

[ 3016.365149] nuvoton-cir 00:01: IR PNP Port not valid!

[ 3016.365276] nuvoton-cir 00:01: disabled

does anybody have a solution for this? then it would be much appreciated.

NUC5i5RYH and Wake-On-Lan

$

I have a new NUC5i5RYH running Linux pretty well and being used as a HTPC.

I want to use WOL which is enabled in the BIOS and appears to work. i.e. I can fire up the NUC from another system (running Windows and using Nirsoft's WakeMeOnLan) or even from my iPhone (using the Fing app).

However, it seems the NUC will wake up at other random times; generally within an hour or three from shutdown.

I thought it possible (but unlikely) something on my network was generating WOL packets so I have been using the Wireshark sniffer on my home LAN to check for spurious WOLs. Wireshark does see all the WOL commands I send intentionally but has not found any other spurious WOL packets.

While I could disable WOL in the BIOS, this is the first machine for which I really wanted WOL to work so I'm loathe to take that step.

I really don't know what to do or try next. Any suggestions?

Has anyone tried to use wimboot on DE3815TYBE?

Hello,

I recently purchased a DE3815TYBE. I would like to take advantage of the built in eMMC, but by using wimboot. I have been told that the file size for wimboot is just under 4 gb. My question is, has anyone tried this yet? And if so, how well did it work?

Personally I have been fighting to even build a wimboot image ( I ain't no expert by any means).

But I am curious if anyone else has tried, or if succeeded, possibly a little direction.

Thanks,

Jesse

Graphics UI problem installing Ubuntu 14.04 LTS/14.10 on Intel NUC5i5RYH

$

Hi,

I'm new to Ubuntu but wanted to try it on my Intel NUC NUC5i5RYH. I've tried to install 14.04 LTS and 14.10 from a USB stick I made, but with both of these during the installation process all the onscreen UI (like the 'next', 'continue', 'ok' buttons) are blacked out and the window where the installation dialogue should be is just a black empty window. This meant I wasn't able to complete the install as I didn't know where to click to proceed. I tried instead running Ubuntu from a live CD and on the desktop the onscreen UI (like the maximise and close buttons) are all similarly messed up/glitchy.

I have managed to get the Ubuntu 15.04 beta to install from a USB stick and this seems to fix whatever problem is occurring but I'd prefer to be running 14.04/14.10.

model: NUC5i5RYH

RAM: 16GB CT2C8G3S160BMCEU (Crucial 8GB x2)

BIOS: RYBDWi35.86A.0137.2015.01017.1700

Processor: Intel Core i5-5250U CPU @ 1.60Ghz

Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 6000

Hard drive: 160Gb SSD - Intel SSDSA2M160G2C 3Gb/s SATA

I haven't tried installing any drivers or updating the BIOS yet (I think the NUC is running the latest version out of the box? 0137?)

Also, with Ubuntu 15.04 when trying to play a video using VLC I get green streaks/interference on the window (but the video plays ok using the built-in Video player).

I haven't tried Windows yet but I assume W7 won't have these kind of graphics problems?

Are these problems with Ubuntu occurring because of the HD Graphics 6000 card?

Any suggestions?

thanks

I am considering using the internal USB 2.0 header in my D54250WYK and have a simple question about the mechanics.  In particular, is there enough room to plug a cable into the header and then close the NUC?  Moreover, if this is possible, what is the best way to feed the cable out of the NUC?
