Intel NUC DC3217BY mSATA port not installed

$

Hi,

I recently worked on Intel NUC DC3217BY. I got it up and running with the following specs:

Intel 7260HMW IEEE 802.11AC Wi-fi and bluetooth mini PCI Express adapter

8GB G.SKILL 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600

120GB Mushkin mSATA SATA III SSD

Windows 7 Professional

I also updated the BIOS to the latest version: GKPPT10H.86A.0047.2013.1118.1714

It was working relatively fine. I was able to start installing updates and programs. However, I was installing a Logitech software for my keyboard when the OS crashed. I rebooted it, but it would not boot into Windows 7 anymore. It said "a bootable device has not been detected". I went into BIOS Setting, and I could not find the mSATA hard drive under "Boot Order" in the Intel Visual BIOS user interface. I went into "Advanced Setup" -> "Devices & Peripherals" -> "SATA". Under "Chipset SATA Controller Config" it says mSATA port not installed. I believe this is why it would not boot, since the mSATA port has been dropped somehow, but I don't know how to fix it.

In my desperation, I tried reflashing the BIOS with the same version. Nothing changed.

Temperature of the system has been stable. Hovers around 60 degree. High, but I read some where that this is normal for this NUC system.

Please advise.

Thank you.

NUC BIOS freezes/lock up when using some menus

I have a D54250WYK. Entering the BIOS everything works fine for a few minutes. Once I navigate to CPU, memory or other performance settings, simply accessing some drop-down lists causes the BIOS to freeze. The BIOS clock and diagnostics continue to run; however, it no longer responds to keyboard presses, except for Ctrl+Alt+Del, which does restart. I can reproduce the behavior every time.

I have tried using different RAM modules. I even returned the NUC for a new one. Same behavior. The RAM is a 2x4GB 1.35V DDR3 PC3-12800 SODIMM kit. I tried upgrading the BIOS to the latest version, and it also has the same problem.

D34010WYK No UEFI Boot Devices

D34010WYK with BIOS 0022 does not recognize USB Flash or Optical drives without Legacy BIOS boot devices enabled.

  • 1x 8GB Crucial CT8G3S160BM
  • Mushkin 120GB mSATA SSD MKNSSDAT120GB-V
  • Dell DP10N USB DVD-ROM Drive

IMG_20131204_194621016.jpg

I've tried installing Mint 15 / Saucy to no avail.  The install appears to succeed until it can't find any bootable devices on first boot.  At this point I think I've tried every possible set of boot related BIOS options, both with BIOS 0018 and now 0022.  I also tried installing Windows Vista from DVD, with Legacy BIOS enabled, and got the error, "Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."  That's because it's booting in legacy mode.  If it had booted it UEFI mode, it wouldn't have an issue with the GPT partition.

Here you can see that it detects the USB Optical drive, mSATA SSD and NIC in Legacy mode:

IMG_20131207_154127192.jpg

When you uncheck the Legacy Boot option, UEFI doesn't see any of them.

IMG_20131207_154220081.jpg

With the USB Optical drive connected, it stops at, "BIOS has detected unsuccessful POST attempt(s).  Possible causes include recent changes to BIOS Performance Options or recent hardware change.  Press 'Y' to enter Setup or  'N' to cancel and attempt to boot with previous settings."  With the drive connected, it will not go into setup when you press Y.  Disconnecting the drive will allow you to continue.

Without the USB Optical drive, it stops at, "A bootable device has not been detected."  If you go into setup it sees the UEFI NIC.

IMG_20131207_160616539.jpg

Secure boot is disabled, in case that makes any difference.

I'm going to experiment more with USB flash drives next, however I think it's definitely a bug that UEFI doesn't support the optical drive.

Problem description

  • Bitstreaming HD audio to AVR will malfunction intermittently while transitioning between titles on a Blu-Ray disc and HD audio tracks can no longer be heard playing in any movie.
  • HDMI connection needs to be renegotiated by unplugging & replugging, power-cycling the AVR, or the NUC is rebooted or suspended->resumed
  • While playing 3D Blu-Ray movies video artifacts/corruption can be observed in random places on the screen
  • TotalMedia Theatre 6.5 is set to perform Automatic refresh rate switching under the Playback option

Impact

  • How many systems are affected? One system is impacted
  • What is the impact? Unable to watch Blu-ray movies consistently
  • Is it lines down? N/A
  • Is there a time limit for solution? ASAP

Update:

If I disable Hardware Acceleration under the Video Settings of TotalMedia Theatre 6.5, the artifacts observed on the screen while watching 3D Blu-Rays such as Avatar or Coraline are no longer present. This looks like it may an issue with the Intel graphics drivers. I have tried multiple new HDMI to Mini HDMI cables as well as Mini HDMI to HDMI adapters with no effect.

For reference I also have another HTPC running the same OS and set of software but it is an AsRock MiniPC Vision3D 137B with a NVIDIA GeForce GT425M. Hardware acceleration is enabled on this HTPC and there are no video artifacts/corruption observed during the playback of 3D Blu-Rays.

In terms of the audio issues, Lois Hill (Intel) has already stated the following:

I've gotten word from our graphics debug team - the issue occurs because of a change in the driver regarding LPSP (a low power mechanism). Fixing this will require a BIOS change to reset the audio controller whenever the driver sends an 'enable' call.  So, now the ball is back in the BIOS team's court. I'll be following up with them to see when they'll be able to roll in this fix.

Regards,

Lois

There are several recent posts on the XBMC forums under the Intel NUC (Haswell Late 2013 edition) thread that are helping to clue this issue towards an HDMI HD Audio handshaking/negotiation problem when switching modes. This would be inline with what Lois is reporting from the Intel engineering teams. From my troubleshooting sessions, this occurs less frequently if you disable the Automatic refresh rate switching under the Playback option of TotalMedia Theatre 6.5 but it still occurs. I want to add that I only encounter this problem as the Blu-ray is switching from title to title, i.e. from previews to warning screens to splash videos to the main title. This never occurs for me in the middle of a stream. If it works it works throughout the movie. If it fails, it fails immediately at the start of the movie title.

The links below are the posts I referenced earlier:

#1307

#1314

My workaround for the time being is to change the Mixing Mode to Mix to PCM uncompressed audio under the Audio Settings of TotalMediaTheatre 6.5.

Hopefully this will help some of you and help pinpoint the issue for the Intel engineering teams.

D54250WYK Windows 8.1 low memory error

Hi, I have the D54250WYK with Windows 8.1 and after leaving it on at the desktop doing nothing for a while, I'll get a low memory error.

My setup is:

Memory is Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB BLS2K8G3N169ES4.

Clean install with Windows 8.  Upgraded to Windows 8.1.

Latest BIOS and Intel drivers installed.  All Windows Update installed.

Enabled "Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays."

Disabled Sleep.

Restarted computer.  Left on desktop and do nothing overnight.  In morning, turn on monitor and there's a low memory error on screen.  Task manager shows more than 14GB of ram free.  I can reproduce this consistently.  Reinstalling windows did not fix the issue.

I am not running any full screen applications or games (simply left on the desktop with no applications running) so I'm not sure if it's the same issue others are having.

D34010WYK Sensor Map/Labels???

I tried several Sensor Monitoring software solutions for Ubuntu 13.10 including, but not limited too, psensor, and sensors-indicator. I use psensor for my desktop because it correctly picked up and listed all my available sensors, and the reason why I wanted to use that for the NUC is because it also has a psensor-server package that works by installing an app on your phone/tablet and the psensor-server on NUC will send the readings to the phone app. But in this case of the NUC sensors-indicator provides may more sensor readings . Here is an picture of my readings, and this is where my question/inquiry comes to light:

sensindi.pngpreff.png

As you will see everything looks great except for "SYSTIN= 253F" now I am assuming that has to be incorrect for one reason or another, it is not specific to this app, no matter what sensor app you use SYSTIN is listed with that highly absurd number.

So I put this out there to see why that is happening?

And if possible get the sensors that are listed with generic label identified with specific info?

Problems with FW23 (i5 Nuc D54250WYK)

Hello!

I flashed my i5 Haswell Nuc with the latest FW23. Now, my power button won't start the Nuc anymore. The button still works, while the Nuc is on, that means I can still hard reset the Nuc or power it off with the button.

Also with the latest FW there are still problems with USB 3.0 Sticks - sometimes they are recognised, most times not.

I've flashed back to FW22, but the power button bug remains!

I've never had such issues with 3rd gen Nucs.

I already found similar threads. I didn't try the mentioned workaround, as it happend only after updating to FW23. So this must be somehow related...

Is someone working on a fix? Should I send my Nuc to Intel, or get my money back, as this problem can't be solved?

Anybody using Windows XP Professional x64 Edition?

Do I really have to upgrade to Windows 7 or 8.1? Will I lose anything if I don't?

I really don't want to waste time learning how to do exactly the same things I already know how to do. I'm not bothered about operating systems. I am more interested in continuing to use all the excellent software I already use. I bought an NUC for a speed and power upgrade.

I don't know if my x64 edition will install yet as I am waiting for memory to arrive.

SCI/SMI GPI port Linux software support

Hello to all,

i would like to ask you about possible experience or status of GPI port software support in Linux kernel.

Latest NUC boards based with Haswell CPUs have system Custom Solutions Header connector with GPI pins. Although in Technical product specs is stated, that it is supposed to some Windows direct application launch feature, I would have perfect usage for that signal in dedicated custom computers with those boards and customized Linux. It would be great as interface from keypressed button, which can be checked during system startup and optionally reset some system settings, particularly misconfigured network. Ideal software interface should be in /sys/class, like Raspberry PI GPIOs for instance.

I've not tried those new boards yet, but have very good experience with previous models. And this GPI usability would be very nice new feature besides other improvements like onboard Serial ATA port.

Best regards,

Now I'm angry. I just installed new memory and SSD following the compatibility list. I connect up, switch on and NOTHING on the screen. I tried another cable from a device that works. Nothing. The Power button is flashing 3 times, then pause, then 3 times etc.

Unless there is something to do I will of course be sending it back. I see other people have had this problem. That is terrible for such a new product.

I verified the cable is working with another device. I also tried to connect to 2 TVs with HDMI inputs.

D54250WYK

When I put the NUC to sleep with W8 it wakes up in 5 minutes without any input by me. I have tried hibernate in W8 and changed various settings in the Power section of the BIOS, no joy. NUC won't wake up with the mouse. I would like to use the sleep / hibernate function to wake up NUC with the mouse in order to avoid wear and tear on the power button.  I now use 4 remotes and don't whish to acquire another. I have never been able to program a remote.

DN2820FYKH DTS-HD?

I've setup my 2820 NUC kit, and under supported audio formats in windows 8.1 DTS-HD is not listed. I've installed all the drivers provided in the NUC driver bundle at Download Center , and attempted to install the ME driver at Download Center , but I'm still unable to do DTS-HD passthrough. Is there a driver available for the 2820 that allows this?

The product spec at http://downloadmirror.intel.com/23417/eng/DN2820FY_TechProdSpec01.pdf lists DTS-HD as a feature of this kit.

Thanks for any help!

DN2820FYKH and USB booting

$

Got my new DN2820FYKH and I'm trying to install the Intel version of Openelec via USB but it won't boot successfully to USB.  I have made sure the option to boot fro usb is checked in the bios. I have tried 5 different USB 2.0 removable drives and none appear when I choose the boot menu. My internal sata appears in the boot menu.  The USB devices work in another computer.  I tried both rear and front USB ports.

When I choose to boot to USB from the BIOS, the computer rebooted and then I think tries to boot from the chosen USB but just rebooted. Happened with all 5 USB devices.  The only thing I have gotten to boot is an USB external drive.

USB HID device not detected

I have DC3217IYE NUC and am having a problem with it detecting a USB HID device (BlinkStick | Smart USB-controlled pixel). In all other computers and VMs I have used this in when it is plugged in the HID drivers are automatically installed and the device is ready for use. If I boot up the NUC with the device attached it is detected and the drivers configured but it the NUC is already running I get a message saying the device is not recognized.

Has anyone else experienced this sort of problem? Can anyone suggest a solution?

If I chose shut-down it turns off but starts again. How so fix? Ubuntu 13.10. NUC Haswell BIOS version: 0022 (same with 0018).

I just found this: Re: D54250WYK Shutdown Reboots

but the asker didn't reply. What should I try? (except I will not install windows because I don't have it because it's a proprietary bad anyway OS).

Build Quality on D54250WYK i5 NUC

I had ordered the D54250WYK unit and everything was working perfectly ok, except the IR. When on XBMC I would move down in the remote, the remote would move one or two lines when constantly pressed down and stop. Lots of key presses were being missed. I then replaced it with an external IR of Lenovo and that would work perfectly fine.

I went ahead and purchased another one from FRY'S and the new unit works perfectly smooth.

Earlier I had the previous edition of the NUC and the first unit had networking speed issues. That too had to be replaced after days of debugging. This gets me to think that the NUC is plagued with Quality build issues.

D54250WYK 'headless' issue?

$

So I just recently received one of these new machines.

Overall I'm impressed but one thing I've noticed is that when no connected display is active - for example if the display port goes into a HDMI switch box which is switched to a different input - I cannot log into the NUC via VNC. Or more precisely, I can but I get a black screen. As soon as switch the display on/make the NUC the active input to the HDMI switch then VNC works fine. I'm using TightVNC on the NUC and I my client is Remotix, which I've tried from both iOS and OS X.

This is inferior to the first gen NUC where even if there was nothing active on the HDMI port you could still log in using VNC and the display would be labelled as 'Generic PnP Monitor'.

Is there anything I can do in software by way of configuration that could make the new NUC behave like the old one in this respect?

Or have I got to now faff about with EDID emulators and use the mini HDMI port instead of the mini DP?

DN2820FYK issues with Audio and Video

$

Hi,

I have a DN2820FYK running Windows 8.1 pro with Media Center.

This is a new build.  Because of various problems, it is a fresh install with no legacy operating sytem on a newly reformatted disc. The unit has the bios just released about a week ago, and I have downloaded all the appropriate drivers and those are current.

I am having two issues.  First, I cannot play multichannel audio correctly with foobar with various plug ins.  Those work just fine on my Intel HD based system (HD 2000) downstairs.  I run a performance checking utility and it shows the CPU is not maxed out at all (more like 20%).  So I think the Audio drivers may have some bugs and do not know if any updates are planned.  So some thoughts would help there.

Second, It appears that the built in VC1 codecs have issues. I did purchase Arcsoft Total Media theatre 6.x; and it seems to have its own VC1 filters.  But that program does not fully support DTS HD MA on my unit, unlike MPC-HC which does using some DLL from the Arcsoft installation.

More than once, however, installing Arcsoft causes a fatal Windows crash (error message is something like 000021a) and so I have had to rebuild Windows multiple times.

There short form of this is that I think the drivers for Audio and Video need some fine tuning at this point.  Can you advise if these issues are known and are being addressed?
