Bug report: DE3815TYKHE: 0054: Linux UEFI boot fails with 2 USB flash drives inserted, boot=ok with only 1 USB flash drive

$
0
0

Environment:

- DE3815TYKHE, 8GB RAM

- BIOS version 0054

- no SATA drive attached

- only USB Flash drives attached

- only UEFI boot enabled (not legacy boot)

- OS Selection: Linux

- Fast boot: disabled

- Boot USB devices first: enabled

- Boot Network devices last: enabled

- Unlimited boot to network attempts: disabled

- Bios setup auto entry: disabled

- Boot devices: USB enabled, all others: disabled

- Secure boot: disabled

Boot order:

1. UEFI : USB : Linux Boot Manager : PART 0 : OS Bootloader

2. UEFI : USB : SanDisk Cruzer Force 1.27 : PSTY 0 : OS Bootloader

USB media:

1. Samsung MUF-32BB (bootable)

2. Sandisk SDCZ71-016G-B35 (Cruzer Force 16GB)

When Samsung (#1) is inserted in front USB slot, the DE3815TYKHE computers boots the Arch Linux system on it via \efi\boot\bootx64.efi.

When Samsung (#1) is inserted in front USB slot and the Sandisk is in a back slot, the DE3815TYKHE computer boots into:

1. EFI default loader menu, ...10 seconds countdown

2. Reboot Into Firmware Interface, ...10 seconds countdown

3. Intel Visual BIOS

Regression:

- it doesn’t matter whether the Sandisk is plugged in the upper or lower back side USB slot

- it doesn’t matter whether in which slot the drives or plugged, even when Sandisk is in front slot and Samsung is in back slot, the system will not boot the Linux system, but Visual Bios instead.

Workaround:

1. unplug Sandisk USB flash drive (not desired)

2. press F10 boot menu, and select “UEFI : USB : Linux Boot Manager : PART 0 : OS Bootloader”

Flash drive partitioning:

1.

Power down USB ports in sleep mode?

NUC6i3SYH and Win10

I am using my NUC as an HTPC and it is desirable that the outboard DAC, which is connected through and powered by a USB port power down when the computer goes into sleep mode.   It appears that all the USB ports still provide power when the computer is powered down.   Is that true, and if so, is there a way to power them down when in sleep mode.

NUC6I5SYK / NUC7i5BNK: Power LED circuit

I've read around in these forums a bit regarding what the circuit behind the NUC Power LED circuit actually is (Pins 2 and 4 on the internal header). There's a bit of conflicting information. So I just wanted to clear it up.

  • Single series resistor on Pin 2? or,
  • Single series resistor on Pin 4? or,
  • Two resistors on both pins? (just in case a user uses GND from another pin on the header to power the LED)
  • And also: what are the values of the resistor(s)? I've read in other posts it is 330R.

Is someone able to confirm what the circuit actually looks like behind these pins for these two NUC models if possible?

Cheers,

Nick

NUC i5 with display going blank (NUC5i5RYH)

Among a few NUC's that I have is this NUC5i5RYH.     I had it in my living room for movie watching.

However, lately I've had multiple issues with the screen (and sound that comes from the mini-hdmi port) just stops.

It has happened wile looking at control panel settings, it has happened when watching a DVD.  It has also happened when the PC was sitting idle for a week.

I use a mini to regular HDMI adapter and a Samsung TV (Smart DVD - can supply model number if required)

Looking at a few threads with similar issues, can the support team advise

1)  Is there are a recommended BIOS and/or Video Driver version that is known to address this

2)  If related to power output , is there a way to increase this.  Would this happen when watching a video and it just goes blank. Does USB>HDMI solve this?

Many thanks and looking forward to solving this.

Hello, with my NUC7i3BNK, Realtek HD Audio Manager, Windows 10, the settings of the sound effects are missing.

About the speakers - Analog, I can not make any sound effects / equalizer settings.

Is not the NUC7i3BNK / ALC283 not enabled or hardware side no longer available?

Many thanks

Reboot on shutdown when connected to display usb hub

Hi,

We have had the issue of not being able to shutdown some NUC's for about a year now. Nothing would fix it, tested many BIOS options and always running the latest updates. I have now found out this only happens when the NUC is connected to the display (Dell) usb hub. A workaround for now is to not use the usb hub but I would like to.

Has anyone found a way to connect a usb hub and be able to shutdown the computer also?

Bitlocker without putting in a password

We have a Intel NUC kit NUC5i5MYHE.  The unit bitlockers and it writes to AD just fine.  On all other units we image (surface pro, surface books, dell laptops, dell pc's) they all write to AD and when they reboot, we never have to put the key in again.  Before we spend money on this unit, I need a way of using them without prompting the user for a password or having a usb key laying around.  This unit does have the TPM 2.0 and have tried it enabled and disabled.  I have updated the bios to latest version and it did not make a difference.  We are loading Windows 10 1607.

I just got the NUC7i3BNH and found out the codes on my previous mini pc ,zotac id64, did not work.

So with the remote setup wizard i tried codes for xbox 360,one and media remotes. Those the volume worked but power on button shut it off and could not turn on the pc.

After a lot of trrial en errors I found two remotes in the database that can power on and off the pc.

Settings for Gateway  Remote 8011100R and hp RC18.. Its not perfect but volume and power on and off works. Going through ebay for product codes on rc6 remotes and testing.

I read in previous nuc there was ir settings in bios, mce or xbox mode? Could not find it in the new one.

NUC6i7KHK Skull Canyon - Cannot Boot - BIOS Corruption

Hello, this is my first post but not one of joy... I have bricked my new 7 days old NUC...

I have spent the last 24 hours trying to revive it but alas, no joy, the BIOS has died.

After a failed update from 0042 to 0042+Integrator Toolkit the device only reboots cyclically without video output or keyboard input.

I have to mention that I was able to go in the BIOS once after that update to do a F9 (reset to Default) and since then it is bricked

After this failure, I tried every method posted by Intel but none works (F7 and the 3 seconds power button). I have tried these countless times with different BIOS versions on a Fat32 USB key, one at a time.

Then I went more serious and opened up the back cover of the NUC to proceed with the BIOS recovery and the dreaded jumper removal.

This it is where I have spent the last 12 hours. It doesn't work.

I also tried removing one of the two memory sticks and the NVMe drive.

Procedure Recovery Mode - Jumper out, USB stick with BIOS file in, Power ON. Result: Absolutely nothing. USB stick light flashes for 2-3 seconds (loading the BIOS I presume) then there is nothing. No screen, no keyboard. I still let it do what looks like nothing for a period of between 2 - 30 mins.  Then I shut it down myself. Remove the USB stick, replace the jumper over positions poles 1&2. Power ON. Then it starts doing the the cycling on/off as before...

I did the little procedure above SO many times and expecting different results. This IS the definition of insanity

Did this with BIOS versions 42, 41, 37, 35 and 34, numerous times, in different order...  No screen input, no keyboard, nada, just spinning happily in emptiness until I turn it off.

THEN... There was something very different with BIOS 0033!!  I thought I wasn't insane after all since I had a different result.

BIOS 33 does bring my screen up and accept my keyboard inputs. It even asks me sometimes what I want to do (little menu with F2, F4, F7, F10). Cool.

I also see the Intel NUC logo with the F2 F7 choices the other times I don't see the little recovery menu.

But it doesn't work... After my choice of Fx it just reboots and cycles showing me the Intel NUC logo screen with choices at the bottom right. Nothing I can choose on that screen, it just reboots every 5-10 seconds.

This is where I am at... I really think I did all I could to save it but obviously not enough.

Intel support team, you're my only hope.

Thanks for your time.

I am getting super low wifi speeds on my NUC at around 20Mbps and sometimes lower. At the same time I tested the speed on my surface pro 3 and got 120Mbps which is the speed I am paying for. The wifi driver I have on the NUC is 19.40.0.3

Graphics output issues on Skull Canyon NUC

Hello,

A client has the i7 skull canyon NUC,

He has two Samsung 4k monitors -- one connected to mini displayport and the other to the thunderbolt 3.0 port on the system.

He has a third HDMI monitor connected to HDMI.

When booting, if the Thunderbolt port is connected, the system boot  loops, and never boots.

If he takes the thunderbolt monitor off, and boots, it boots fine, and then works fine when he plugs the third monitor in.

I am at a loss. Thoughts? Thank you.

Samsung's 4TB SSD is on the market & 9mm 4TB HDD's are imminent. Has anyone located specs, or will Intel comment upon the capability of NUC7 BNH's mainboards to operate with an M.2 boot drive and a 4TB secondary? (i.e. the maximum 2.5" drive capacity for the mainboard with an M.2 SSD as a system boot drive)

NUC6i7KYH Freezing during World of Warcraft (Mouse still moves)

Hello,

I am adding myself to the list of folks experiencing weird freezes with their Skull Canyon NUCs.  In my case, the system freezes randomly while playing World of Warcraft.  When it freezes, the mouse still operates, and I can get the Task Manager to pop up, but I have no ability to kill tasks and ultimately have to hold down the power button to reset the machine.  I have tried both 'Reboot' and 'Shutdown' during these freezes as well, and while the system seems to try to shutdown, it can't.

Some Hardware items:

Micron 16ATF1G64HZ-2G1A2 (2*8GB Modules)

Samsung 950 PRO 512GB M.2 SSD

Dell ST2420L Monitor with Dell AY511 Soundbar

I am running 1920 x 1080 resolution at 60 Hz.  I'm getting 90-95 FPS in the game - runs smooth.  I've watched the temps and I know the CPU is not therm-tripping.  I've even changed the BIOS setting to make the fan run sooner/system cooler and it had no effect.

Never saw the problem until we started stressing the system with World of Warcraft.  Using all the current BIOS and Drivers.  Win 10 fully updated to latest version.

Thanks

How to "Linux" the NUC

$

I hope this will start a discussion on the use of NUC6i5/NUC6i3 with Linux distributions (i.e. Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, and others)

Screenshot from 2017-02-13 01:30:37.jpg

For some time I was reluctant to buy a NUC since all feedback I found was about bugs and unsupported devices.  For many years I used Intel semiconductors in my projects and PC platforms.  So I really was sad about the lack of interest of Intel staff to support the Linux community, after all we also buy lots of motherboards and CPUs and devices from Intel.

Then I found a project called Opensource 01.org | Intel Open Source Technology Center  that turn on a light for the my quest, so I decided this new year to invest in a new NUC kit the NUC6i5SYH which I installed 2x4GBytes of RAM, a 250GByte SSD/M2 and a 500GB HDD/SATA to test and be able to retire my Gigabyte desktop tower, if all goes well.  The power efficiency was the first point that caught my attention, which is my area of interest since college.  I have tested many low power units, of many brands, for business development, and this NUC really did look promising.

So this is my test log with the mighty, greener, smaller footprint desktop killer that Intel is developing and the work around solution I have to share with our great GPL/GNU community of enthusiasts and professional IT experts that do not take for granted closed black box systems.  Go were no one has gone before.

The first week with my NUC6i5 was very strait forward.  I downloaded the best version (by my research)  http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.04/ubuntu-14.04.5-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent that could bundle support for most of the hardware devices included and used the mkusb to create a USB live ubuntu installation device.  You can use a USB stick or a SD card.  I used a microSD with a USB adapter.  Since the ISO image is less than 2Gbytes usually today any SD or USB drive is fine.

I decided to make the first install on the HDD, since I am not comfortable, yet, with SSD's limitations, (ie.  SSD vs. HDD ), since I could need to reinstall the system many time on this first test, and last, but not least, 10 second or 1 second boot time is not a problem for my applications and use of the NUC.

My partition strategy is using the advantages of EFI:

NAME   MAJ:MIN RM     SIZE  RO TYPE        MOUNTPOINT

sda      8:0    0   465,8G  0  disk

├─sda1   8:1    0     243M  0  part FAT32  /boot/efi*   bootloader/grub

├─sda2   8:2    0    47,7G  0  part Ext4   /

├─sda3   8:3    0   114,5G  0  part Ext4   /home

└─sda4   8:4    0     3,8G  0  part        [SWAP]

Notice there is free space left for other uses, and /dev/sdb not in use.

OK, so after the install and boot, most devices worked: boot screen, system screen (then logging screen), network (ie. wifi) just connected and ask for the password, Bluetooth was on (had to disable it manually), and I noticed a heat issue, compared to the Live USB test with just the SSD installed, prior to installing the HDD.  I rebooted and tweaked the cooling configuration of the UEFI GUI and ajusted the threshold temperatures and the fan started to be more present (ie. I could now hear it working more often) and the temperature was under control again (notice: I keep air conditioning off at my SOHO for lower carbon footprint).  I then installed lm-sensors, gkrellm, acpi packages and did some google search to fine tune the configuration files.  The probing of the sensors (ie. using sensors-detect command) shows Found unknown chip with ID 0x8607

I would suggest this git project Support for IT8607E  for the tip on using the:

sudo modprobe --verbose it87 force_id=0x8603

this did really work around the lack of a module for the used chip in the NUC (hope Intel helps us here to fine tune measurements ).

This is the output I get with sensors command:

NUC-John:~$ sensors

As you can see, still needs some fixes of the sensors configuration file, but we are on the right track.

That is all for now.  Hope to get some feedback.  Long Live Linux!

NUC6i7KYK HDMI audio glitch

I have a very strange audio issue that I'd like advice on.

I recently replaced my NUC DC3217BY with the NUC6i7KYK. The computer sits under my TV for media playback, video calling, and gaming.

My TV is a Panasonic plasma from 2008 with Full HD resolution. The surround amp is a Marantz NR1601 (HDMI1.4a) with 7.1 surround.

Windows is set up to output 7.1 with 24-bit audio @ 96kHz. This setting is common between the two NUCs.

For media, I stream YouTube or Netflix, play video files using VLC, and play DVDs/Blu-Rays using WinDVDPro.

With my DC3217BY I used WinDVDPro11, on the NUC6i7KYK I use WinDVDPro12. The drive is a Pioneer BDR-XU03 connected to one of the rear USB3.0 ports of the NUC.

The DC3217BY setup was flawless. It is only nearly flawless with the NUC6i7KYK.

I can play everything, but when I open WinDVDPro12 to play a DVD or  Blu-Ray, I notice the PCM indicator on my amp blinks off for about half a second every 10-20 seconds with an accompanying break in audio from the speakers. There is no issue with the video playback at all.

If I close WinDVDPro, the audio glitch continues on the same cadence regardless of what programs I open or what media I play.

The only way to get it to stop is either to put the computer into and out of standby or select a different audio playback device from the Windows 10 volume dialogue and then switch back to HDMI.

While WinDVDPro is open, if I change audio output to the headset jack or my Bluetooth headphones, there is no glitching on those outputs. When I revert to HDMI, the glitching resumes.

I have downloaded the Intel Driver Update Utility. However, when it scans my computer it keeps throwing up the same software and drivers as out-of-date. Attempts to install recommended versions fail. The graphics driver and the audio driver, however, are up-to-date. The chipset, Thunderbolt and a couple of others (including CIR) are flagged as wrong (I am not using the Thunderbolt port yet, the CIR seems to work without issue).

I have tried to run the HDMI v2.0 firmware update, but it will not install until I connect a HDMI v2.0 compliant device, which I do not have.

I don't believe I can blame WinDVDPro for the glitching as all it has to do is decode the audio and video from any disc that is playing, which it does correctly with all my other audio devices and there is no issue with the video at any point.

The fact that the issue starts when WinDVDPro starts is suspicious, but closing WinDVDPro does not fix it (I have to adjust audio output or put the computer to sleep).

The HDMI cables are all 1.4 high-speed and are 3' or 4' in length, so signal distortion does not seem likely (and anyway, audio is fine with every program except WinDVDPro).

My Marantz receiver is compatible with the audio settings I have.

Are there any known incompatibilities with HDMI audio that I can investigate?

Why doesn't the driver update utility work correctly to update all the drivers it says are outdated?

I have tried altering the settings for audio in Windows, but no sample rate or dynamic range bit-depth has any different effect. I have tried changing the way WinDVDPro works with audio from the DVD/Blu-Ray discs, but again no change.

NUC7i3BNH Samsung EVO 960 m.2 Windows 10 No boot device

Installed Samsung EVO 960 NVMe m.2 250Gb drive as the only drive in NUC7i3BNH bios 0036. Installed Windows 10 (Danish) from USB. After finishing installation Windows goes into endless loop with blue screen and NO BOOT DEVICE message.

Windows are fresh as can be ... just downloaded to the USB stick with Microsofts tool.

I noticed that the the usual first step "copying files" in Windows installation was almost immediately done (<1 second) as if nothing was copied to disk even though Windows says it was successful.

Any hint or suggestions?

Hi there, my nuc is connected to my yamaha amp via hdmi. When playing a video from any source the audio cuts out spontaneously for 1 second or less every 20-60 seconds. It also shows on my amp that it is not receiving audio for that one second that it cuts out for. The bios and graphics driver are up to date, thanks.

my problem is that I'm having intermittent issues with the orinco usb3 case with a 500 gig Seagate non ssd drive

if that drive is being access......it works fine.  if you do not use it for a while and then go to it, it hangs and takes forever to read, if at all.  this happens on any of the usb 3 ports on the nuc.

my question is.....anyone have great success with a usb 3 case and if yes what model.....id be willing to try it

Anyone else have boot issue with m.2 after "power loss"? (NUC7i3BNH)

I've got a NUC7i3BNH with a Kingston M.2 SSD internally installed alongside a 2TB 2.5 inch Sata drive.

The M.2 SSD works fine (Power on, Power Off, etc.) while it is constantly connected to the power cord.

As soon as the device has been unplugged, it does not find the M.2 drive anymore.

The (unwanted) solution/workaround is physically pressing the power button twice (once for shutdown and the second time time to power back up) after that it works fine. This behavior is not really in my (use) case, as it is supposed to just power up and drive a beamer that is mounted in the ceiling.

Anybody else experience something like this?
