NUC bios wont exit

Hi,

I've come across a really odd problem.  I am using the NUC5CPYH (NUC5CPYB desktop motherboard) with the latest bios (PYBSWCEL.86A.0058.2016.1102.1842) and when I try to either "save and exit" or "discard and exit" using either the keyboard shortcuts or the mouse the NUC doesn't reboot.  What happens is the search text field (at the top centre of the screen) highlights with a orange box around it.

The only way to get out of the bios is to use ctrl+alt+del.  Naturally, this fails to save the settings I change.  Super weird huh?

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on here and how I might get my NUC to work properly again?

Thanks

NUC5i3MYHE UEFI firmware issues

I've got BIOS version MYBDWi30.86A.0040.2016.1124.1654 and I am attempting to use UEFI PXE booting. I have the UEFI PXE instance boot iPXE which then is booting the Xen hypervisor. I've found the following issues with this firmware version:

- When Xen calls BootServices->QueryMode() the boot process hangs completely. Previous revisions of the firmware this did not occur. iPXE does look up the GOP and the HiiFont Protocols and output text via that instead of through SIMPLE_TEXT_PROTOCOL's StdOut in BootServices.

- SIMPLE_TEXT_PROTOCOL does not output anything via serial or display ever. Even if I have iPXE use the StdOut API before it looks up the GOP it doesn't work.

- GetTime() causes the machine to hang.

- Calling ExitBootServices() before calling SetVirtualAddressMap() causes the machine to hang. Which appears to break guarantees provided by section 2.2.2 of the UEFI 2.6 spec (I know this board is based on an older version but the same text existed in older revs of the spec down to 2.0)

Let me know what troubleshooting and debugging info I can provide to help this. I've also got a NUC5i5MYHE and issues 2, 3, and 4 exist there as well.

NUC Drivers - How do YOU find them?

$

Hello,

During my recent post about an issue, it was commented by someone that I was using an 'old' graphics driver.  I wanted to spin up a quick discussion about this because it seems unclear to me how folks are supposed to be keeping their systems up to date.

If you go to the Intel Downloads page, and search for 'NUC6i7KYK', you get a list of a mix of drivers and items relating to the NUC system.  Scanning down the list, you'll see:

Intel® HD Graphics Driver for Windows 7*, 8.1*, and Windows® 10 for Intel® NUC Kit NUC6i7KYK

Installs the Intel® HD Graphics Driver 15.45.10.4542 for Intel® NUC Kit NUC6i7KYK...

This is why I claimed I was using the latest driver.  It's the latest one that shows up via this search method.  I do understand that if I search for 'Graphics', I see many, many entries, including:

Intel® Graphics Driver for Windows* [15.45]

Installs the Intel® Graphics Driver 15.45.14.4590 for Windows*.

So, are we supposed to search for the type of system we have to find the drivers, or are we supposed to search each subsystem, one at a time, to ensure we have the latest driver for each subsystem?  Why does Intel post drivers with no system type identified, and then come back and post drivers again saying they are 'for Intel NUC Kit NUCxxxyyy'?  Am I supposed to trust and use drivers that do not specifically identify that they are for my NUC?

I can say that in most support/download systems on the Internet, you are first asked to identify your hardware before they present you with a list of download choices.  Intel's site seems to just toss everything into one big list, which you then have to search within.  And searching by system name/type doesn't seem to give you the best/latest driver.

Thanks

D34010WYKH Audio drops on HDMI Input switch

So I have had this computer running great for literally multiple years, this past week something has changed all of a sudden.

If I boot up the computer the audio works fine exactly how it should. When I turn off the TV or switch input and switch back to the NUC there is no longer any audio. It still lists it as being installed and visually all the settings look correct, but there is no audible output. I have tried changing HDMI cables, changed the input it was plugged into the tv, and made sure I had the latest graphics/audio driver installed from the intel website.  If i restart the computer the audio will come back until I switch inputs or turn the tv off, at which point when I go back to the NUC the audio is gone again.  It is like it is not "waking up" or reactivates the audio when I switch back to it, but if i watch when i switch the input back to the NUC it does change the sound icon from the "mute" symbol to the audible symbol...so it does detect that it should come "alive".  I will say the odd thing though is if I try to play a video it will play like 1/4 of a second and freeze. Like i can hear a blip of sound, but it immediately errors or freezes.
Ive reinstalled the drive multiple times :/

Any ideas?

NUC6CAYH switch on with Remote not working

I am using 3 different Nuc with Libreelec 8.0 as HTPC connected with HDMI to TV : DN2820FYKH NUC5PPYH and NUC6CAYH

All Nucs have the same XBOX360 Media Remote connected

The DN2820FYKH NUC5PPYH can be switched on with this remote, but not the NUC6CAYH

The internal CIR is activated and the Remote is working switch off is working and so on but not switch on.

Latest Bios (29) is installed. CEC is activated, so the Nuc starts when TV gets switch on and when switch off the Nuc, the TV switched off too

When the CEC is deactivated it is not possible to switch on the NUC (also when its enabled) with the Remote only with the Power-button

In the Bios i have set to start from S3/S4/S5 via CIR, played around with the settings, but unable to switch the Nuc on with the Remote

Also the Nuc starts by itself after switch off sometimes, sometime switching the TV also on, sometimes not

The NUC6CAYH is connected via HDMI with a Toshiba 40XV733G

Any suggestion what i am doing wrong ?

Which hard drive for NUC? Plus cloning

Mine is a NUC5i3RYH with a normal Hitachi drive. I want to switch to a Seagate SSHD Hybrid 500gb drive.

1) SSHDs are not listed in the approved configuration pages for this NUC, only SSDs and HDs. Does the NUC care?

2) When cloning from the old drive to the new drive, does this create a Windows licencing issue or will the new drive straight work?

Skull Canyon NUC6i7KYK will not resume from sleep a few times a month; hang/freeze, not a crash, needs to be powered off to restart

$

0

On July-1-2016, I purchased an Intel NUC Skull Canyon NUC6i7KYK kit.

Along with the NUC6i7KYK, I purchased:
- SAMSUNG 950 PRO M.2 512GB PCI-Express 3.0 SSD MZ-V5P512BW
- G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB (2 x 8G) SO-DIMM DDR4 2800 Memory Model F4-2800C18D-16GRS
- Windows 10 Pro (64-bit) license and media

I installed Windows 10 Pro, plus all the then-current hardware drivers from the Intel support site for the NUC6i7KYK device. The NUC6i7KYK power adapter is connected to a UPS. The system is connected to the local wired network, not using the wireless network adapter. There is one external USB drive permanently connected (used for backups). The original monitor was a Dell monitor connected using an HDMI cable; the current monitor (recently purchased) is a BenQ monitor connected via a mini-DisplayPort cable.

Since the beginning, I have experienced occasional lockups/hangs from sleep mode; when this happens, the power light on the NUC6i7KYK is on (solid), the monitor is in sleep state, but the system won't respond to keyboard or mouse activity or to Ctrl-Alt-Del. The only way to recover is to hold down the power button until it shuts down, and then power it on again. This happens maybe once or twice a month, with no apparent pattern; sometimes it will happen twice in a few days, sometimes not at all for 3-4 weeks. The event viewer does not show any errors at the time of the hang; no events at all are listed in a several-hour period from when the system presumably locked-up until the system is powered off and on again. There are no crash dumps when this happens (and crash dumps are enabled in Windows). The system just seems to stop, it doesn't crash. There is lots of free space on the system drive. I usually only leave one or two browser applications running (with several tabs open in each); I normally shut down any other applications before I let the system sleep.

I have upgraded the Intel drivers as they have become available. And, I have installed all Windows updates as they have become available. I am not using any insider or beta Windows releases. The Winver utility currently shows Windows 10 Pro (64-bit) version 1607 (Build 14393.693).

The system BIOS is currently version 0042 (Sep-29-2016). I used Samsung Magician to upgrade the firmware on the SSD M.2 drive - it is currently upgraded to the latest, version 2B0QBXX7.

I have installed drivers from https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/89187/Intel-NUC-Kit-NUC6i7KYK

The current versions of some of the installed drivers are:
- Intel Iris Pro Graphics 580 - driver Intel version 21.20.16.4590 (Jan-18-2017), updated from v15.45.10.4542 (Dec-1-2016)
- Intel wired network - Intel driver version 12.15.23.7 (Aug-4-2016)
- Samsung NVMe controller - Samsung driver version 1.4.17 (Dec-11-2015)
- Bluetooth 19.40.1702.1059 (Jan-9-2017)

I have tested the memory using the Windows memory diagnostic tool as well as the Passmark Memtest86 application (from a bootable USB drive). Both of these show zero memory errors.

I have run SFC/scannow in Windows and it shows no errors.

Are there any suggestions regarding what might be causing this problem? Is it possible that there is a hardware problem?

NUC7I3BNH high frequent, electrical noise on HDD activity

Today I watched my first movie with this NUC and got really annoyed by this fizzle, sizzle, high frequent electrical noise which wasn't easy to locate. It's made by the NUC on HDD activity =( Does anybody know if this is a hardware defect or problem, which may result in a broken NUC/HDD on long term? Is there a way to fix it?

Additionally the power supply is humming like a little swarm of bees. I exchanged it with my old NUC's supply. Now none of both makes noise anymore - strange world!!

Blue Light and 4k on NUC7i3BNH

Hi, I've just bought this Nuc and I have some questions:

1) Is there a way to turn off the big blue light on the Nuc front?

2) I tried to play a 4k mkv from my NAS connected with Lan cable using VLC but it's not playing smoothly , like if CPU it was not powerful enough  ( and it's not a Lan problem because I can play the same file with my Sony tv through the same lan ). Is there a setting or something that I can do or simply CPU doesn't make it?

3) As I have a Sony tv 4k connected to Nuc , is it better to leave Nuc video resolution to 1920*1080 as recommended by the system or using a 4k res ?

Thanks for your help

D54250WY won't start, but gives unknown LED signs and power impulses

$

Hello folks!

I'm facing the following struggle and hope you might help me.

My Intel NUC D54250WYB can't start (even not into BIOS; blackscreen). It worked fine before for more than 2 weeks. When i plug in the power cable the green standby LED and the blue LED 1 turn on (fan not working). After pushing the button, the green LED keeps shining permanently, while the blue LED starts flashing for 1 second after a 2,5-3 second break. Whenever the blue LED blinks, the cpu fan starts for a second and turns off again. Same for SSD. It keeps doing this forever (I counted for 20 flashes). When i hold the power button for 5 seconds, the blue LED stops flashing and turns off (no more power impulses for fan or SSD/HDD). These LED signs do not give a sound signal.

What I've already tried:

-removing all connected mpci cards, usb peripherals, audio and video

-removing both RAM and trying to start the NUC with every possible combination of RAM 1 or 2 in Slot 1 or 2

-trying to start with another monitor and another hdmi-cable (without adapters)

-trying to start with another HDD with another OS

-trying to start with another PSU and power cable

-i also tried to reset the CMOS, by removing the battery; i left it disconnected for more than 2 hours (maybe too short?)

-i also tried resetting the bios with both possible ways

All of these led to the exact same problem mentioned above. This problem appeared after a power breakdown, during boot (no other changes were made). Is there anything left i can do? Does it make sense to wait longer with the battery disconnected?

More details about my NUC:

I've used 2 4GB crucial DDR-1600 SODIMM 1.35V CL1 (which shouldn't be the problem since it worked before)

I've runned Mac OSX Sierra on it and I've already read, that the NUC's sleep mode caused problems when using unsupported OS like Ubuntu. Could it be, that i cannot find any meaning for the LED signal, because it is the sleepmode? (I've never seen the NUC in sleepmode before) And is there any way to get the NUC out of that mode?

Thanks,

René

Intel NUC 5PPYH freezes

$

Hi everyone,

I've bought a few Intel NUC 5PPYH for our company.

I wanted to use them just to establish a RDP connection to our terminalservers.

I've equipped them with:

Samsung 750 EVO MZ-750120BW 120GB

Kingston KVR16LS11/4 4GB (DDR3L Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM 1,35V, 204-pin 1,5V)

I've installed Windows 8.1x64 Pro.

They run very smooth, but I gave the first of them to my colleague for testing, and he told me, that the whole system is freezing from time to time, and the only option is to hard-reset the client. The problem is not reproducible.

I've seen, that this is a quite known problem in this forums.

I've read that (under Linux) updating the kernel seems to fix the problem.

Others have fixed the problem by choosing the Intel Rapid Storage driver at the windows installation.

Are there any known fixes?

Yes, I know that this is a user-to-user community, but has there been any official statement from Intel about this problem?

What I'm going to to now:

- try this: How to fix 100% Disk Usage on Microsoft Windows 10/8.1/8/7/Vista - YouTube

- reinstalling Windows with the Intel Rapid Storage driver at the installation

Thanks in advance.

Regards.

Swapping SSD between two Intel NUC6i5SYH

$

Hi all,

I have two Intel NUC6i5SYH. I installed one M.2 SSD on one of the NUC, installed Ubuntu 16.04 on it, and I tried then to use that SSD on the other NUC. However, the other NUC is not able to boot and this gives the following error "Insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". Any idea what the problem could be? I checked on the BIOS that the SSD is actually recognized and that the M.2 slot is enabled.

Thanks a lot.

Samsung's 4TB SSD is on the market & 9mm 4TB HDD's are imminent. Has anyone located specs, or will Intel comment upon the capability of NUC7 BNH's mainboards to operate with an M.2 boot drive and a 4TB secondary? (i.e. the maximum 2.5" drive capacity for the mainboard with an M.2 SSD as a system boot drive)

How to "Linux" the NUC

$

I hope this will start a discussion on the use of NUC6i5/NUC6i3 with Linux distributions (i.e. Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, and others)

Screenshot from 2017-02-13 01:30:37.jpg

For some time I was reluctant to buy a NUC since all feedback I found was about bugs and unsupported devices.  For many years I used Intel semiconductors in my projects and PC platforms.  So I really was sad about the lack of interest of Intel staff to support the Linux community, after all we also buy lots of motherboards and CPUs and devices from Intel.

Then I found a project called Opensource 01.org | Intel Open Source Technology Center  that turn on a light for the my quest, so I decided this new year to invest in a new NUC kit the NUC6i5SYH which I installed 2x4GBytes of RAM, a 250GByte SSD/M2 and a 500GB HDD/SATA to test and be able to retire my Gigabyte desktop tower, if all goes well.  The power efficiency was the first point that caught my attention, which is my area of interest since college.  I have tested many low power units, of many brands, for business development, and this NUC really did look promising.

So this is my test log with the mighty, greener, smaller footprint desktop killer that Intel is developing and the work around solution I have to share with our great GPL/GNU community of enthusiasts and professional IT experts that do not take for granted closed black box systems.  Go were no one has gone before.

The first week with my NUC6i5 was very strait forward.  I downloaded the best version (by my research)  http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.04/ubuntu-14.04.5-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent that could bundle support for most of the hardware devices included and used the mkusb to create a USB live ubuntu installation device.  You can use a USB stick or a SD card.  I used a microSD with a USB adapter.  Since the ISO image is less than 2Gbytes usually today any SD or USB drive is fine.

I decided to make the first install on the HDD, since I am not comfortable, yet, with SSD's limitations, (ie.  SSD vs. HDD ), since I could need to reinstall the system many time on this first test, and last, but not least, 10 second or 1 second boot time is not a problem for my applications and use of the NUC.

My partition strategy is using the advantages of EFI:

NAME   MAJ:MIN RM     SIZE  RO TYPE        MOUNTPOINT

sda      8:0    0   465,8G  0  disk

├─sda1   8:1    0     243M  0  part FAT32  /boot/efi*   bootloader/grub

├─sda2   8:2    0    47,7G  0  part Ext4   /

├─sda3   8:3    0   114,5G  0  part Ext4   /home

└─sda4   8:4    0     3,8G  0  part        [SWAP]

Notice there is free space left for other uses, and /dev/sdb not in use.

OK, so after the install and boot, most devices worked: boot screen, system screen (then logging screen), network (ie. wifi) just connected and ask for the password, Bluetooth was on (had to disable it manually), and I noticed a heat issue, compared to the Live USB test with just the SSD installed, prior to installing the HDD.  I rebooted and tweaked the cooling configuration of the UEFI GUI and ajusted the threshold temperatures and the fan started to be more present (ie. I could now hear it working more often) and the temperature was under control again (notice: I keep air conditioning off at my SOHO for lower carbon footprint).  I then installed lm-sensors, gkrellm, acpi packages and did some google search to fine tune the configuration files.  The probing of the sensors (ie. using sensors-detect command) shows Found unknown chip with ID 0x8607

I would suggest this git project Support for IT8607E  for the tip on using the:

sudo modprobe --verbose it87 force_id=0x8603

this did really work around the lack of a module for the used chip in the NUC (hope Intel helps us here to fine tune measurements ).

This is the output I get with sensors command:

NUC-John:~$ sensors

As you can see, still needs some fixes of the sensors configuration file, but we are on the right track.

That is all for now.  Hope to get some feedback.  Long Live Linux!

NUC6i7KYK HDMI audio glitch

$

I have a very strange audio issue that I'd like advice on.

I recently replaced my NUC DC3217BY with the NUC6i7KYK. The computer sits under my TV for media playback, video calling, and gaming.

My TV is a Panasonic plasma from 2008 with Full HD resolution. The surround amp is a Marantz NR1601 (HDMI1.4a) with 7.1 surround.

Windows is set up to output 7.1 with 24-bit audio @ 96kHz. This setting is common between the two NUCs.

For media, I stream YouTube or Netflix, play video files using VLC, and play DVDs/Blu-Rays using WinDVDPro.

With my DC3217BY I used WinDVDPro11, on the NUC6i7KYK I use WinDVDPro12. The drive is a Pioneer BDR-XU03 connected to one of the rear USB3.0 ports of the NUC.

The DC3217BY setup was flawless. It is only nearly flawless with the NUC6i7KYK.

I can play everything, but when I open WinDVDPro12 to play a DVD or  Blu-Ray, I notice the PCM indicator on my amp blinks off for about half a second every 10-20 seconds with an accompanying break in audio from the speakers. There is no issue with the video playback at all.

If I close WinDVDPro, the audio glitch continues on the same cadence regardless of what programs I open or what media I play.

The only way to get it to stop is either to put the computer into and out of standby or select a different audio playback device from the Windows 10 volume dialogue and then switch back to HDMI.

While WinDVDPro is open, if I change audio output to the headset jack or my Bluetooth headphones, there is no glitching on those outputs. When I revert to HDMI, the glitching resumes.

I have downloaded the Intel Driver Update Utility. However, when it scans my computer it keeps throwing up the same software and drivers as out-of-date. Attempts to install recommended versions fail. The graphics driver and the audio driver, however, are up-to-date. The chipset, Thunderbolt and a couple of others (including CIR) are flagged as wrong (I am not using the Thunderbolt port yet, the CIR seems to work without issue).

I have tried to run the HDMI v2.0 firmware update, but it will not install until I connect a HDMI v2.0 compliant device, which I do not have.

I don't believe I can blame WinDVDPro for the glitching as all it has to do is decode the audio and video from any disc that is playing, which it does correctly with all my other audio devices and there is no issue with the video at any point.

The fact that the issue starts when WinDVDPro starts is suspicious, but closing WinDVDPro does not fix it (I have to adjust audio output or put the computer to sleep).

The HDMI cables are all 1.4 high-speed and are 3' or 4' in length, so signal distortion does not seem likely (and anyway, audio is fine with every program except WinDVDPro).

My Marantz receiver is compatible with the audio settings I have.

Are there any known incompatibilities with HDMI audio that I can investigate?

Why doesn't the driver update utility work correctly to update all the drivers it says are outdated?

I have tried altering the settings for audio in Windows, but no sample rate or dynamic range bit-depth has any different effect. I have tried changing the way WinDVDPro works with audio from the DVD/Blu-Ray discs, but again no change.

NUC6i7KYH Freezing during World of Warcraft (Mouse still moves)

Hello,

I am adding myself to the list of folks experiencing weird freezes with their Skull Canyon NUCs.  In my case, the system freezes randomly while playing World of Warcraft.  When it freezes, the mouse still operates, and I can get the Task Manager to pop up, but I have no ability to kill tasks and ultimately have to hold down the power button to reset the machine.  I have tried both 'Reboot' and 'Shutdown' during these freezes as well, and while the system seems to try to shutdown, it can't.

Some Hardware items:

Micron 16ATF1G64HZ-2G1A2 (2*8GB Modules)

Samsung 950 PRO 512GB M.2 SSD

Dell ST2420L Monitor with Dell AY511 Soundbar

I am running 1920 x 1080 resolution at 60 Hz.  I'm getting 90-95 FPS in the game - runs smooth.  I've watched the temps and I know the CPU is not therm-tripping.  I've even changed the BIOS setting to make the fan run sooner/system cooler and it had no effect.

Never saw the problem until we started stressing the system with World of Warcraft.  Using all the current BIOS and Drivers.  Win 10 fully updated to latest version.

Thanks

Intel NUC7i3BNK CEC not turning TV/HDMI, I performed all updates...

Hi,

I really need to get this working. My remote IR doesn't reach the TV and I want the NUC to power the HDTV

My remote IR doesn't reach the TV.

Under Bios, I have Auto turn tv on s3/s4/s5 boot

My TV has CEC active and when I search for CEC enabled devices on HDMI1 it doesn't find anything. I tried a second TV, which also has CEC enabled and still no luck.

The NUC is connected to HDMI1 and still doesn't find it.

Can anyone tell me how I can get this NUC to turn the TV on?

Thanks,
