DN2820, Once again no video/POST

$

I have three DN2820's that after numerous, numerous problems initially finally got running and have been running without much issues for about 2 months now until this morning. I had initially set the NUC up with Intel Fastboot (USB optimization, etc) so this morning when i decided i wanted to install a different OS the only way to get to the boot menu was to try unplugging it while powered on and plugging it back in (as stated in the forums here). This did not work so i opened the NUC up and moved the jumpers to pins 2-3 and powered back on to clear the BIOS. After doing this there was no POST/Video on the screen. The NUC will power up and the fans are on but there is no video on the screen and no POST. i tried removing the BIOS jumper and powering it on, putting bit back to pins 1-2 , etc numerous times with no results.

Any ideas what else i can do, the memory is good, i moved it to another 2820 i have and it powered up fine. I tried another TV, another HDMI cable, etc ( even though i did not really think this was the issue as this exact setup was working before i tried to clear the CMOS).

Is there anything else i can do? or will i have to send this back to Intel?

Haswell NUC CIR receiver (ACPI issue?)

The D54250WYK infrared receiver is not working out of the box in Linux. I have been testing this in 64bit Ubuntu 13.10 and OpenELEC 3.2.3.

The following lines can be found in dmesg:

[0.168692] pnp 00:08: Plug and Play ACPI device, IDs NTN0530 (disabled)
[2.497482] nuvoton-cir 00:08: IR PNP Port not valid!

Unloading the nuvoton-cir module, enabling the device resources and loading the nuvoton-cir module again seems to fix the issue.

$ sudo modprobe -r nuvoton-cir && echo "auto" | sudo tee /sys/bus/acpi/devices/NTN0530\:00/physical_node/resources && sudo modprobe nuvoton-cir

I dumped the DSDT and found this:

                Device (CIRP)                {                    Name (_HID, EisaId ("NTN0530"))                    Method (_STA, 0, NotSerialized)                    {                        Return (IRST (0x06))                    }

Is this correct? If I'm reading this right, it claims the device is not present, is enabled, should be shown in user interface and is not functioning properly.

Remote boots one NUC, and not another

Hi there

I'm having a really strange issue with my xbox 360 media remote. It can boot my dn2820 nuc, but NOT my d34010 i3 nuc. The remote DOES work when the OS has loaded, openelec in this case, for both units.

I've tried a different rc6 compatible remote, a Microsoft MCE knockoff and it works fine for both when booting/operating.

Both NUCs running their latest bioses. I've tried resetting bios to default, no change. Tried disabling s4/s5, no difference.

Why is it that one nuc can boot using this x360 remote, yet the other cannot?

Please help!!

DN2820FYKH not booting

Dear all,

I received my new NUC 2820 today, looking forward to spending the Easter holidays setting it up, but so far it's been a very frustrating experience.

I have installed:

  • Crucial CT51264BF160BJ (4 GB RAM, from the supported list)
  • OCZ Vertex 2 SSD

Using in combination with:

  • HP 2309m display (with HDMI)
  • Different USB drives (from 128 MB up to 16 GB)

After installing the hardware, I powered on the NUC. I heard the fan spinning and the lights on my mouse and keyboard came on, but the screen did not register an active connection. Finally, after several minutes, the screen came on, saying 'Detected BIOS security jumper removed'. Huh? I switched off the NUC and checked, and found no jumpers. After consulting Google, I located the place next to the RAM where the jumper should be, but it wasn't there. Remember, I just took the NUC out of the cellophane wrapper earlier today and didn't touch the jumper - it just wasn't there. I've checked the rest of the case, but there's no jumper to be found. Very strange. Luckily I still had a spare PC lying around, from which I took a jumper for the NUC.

Next step: powering on the NUC with a jumper installed. This seemed to be going better, for the first time I saw the 'Intel NUC' splash screen. But not the 'press F2 for BIOS' etc. texts I was expecting. Instead, it went straight to the text 'a bootable device has not been detected'. On the SSD, there's a Windows ISO that should boot, but it doesn't. I then tried removing the SSD and booting from a bootable USB drive with OpenElec. Didn't boot either, still says 'a bootable device has not been detected'.

Okay, so let's try to update the BIOS first, since one of the texts showed I'm on version 0015. However, as said I didn't get the prompt 'press F2 for BIOS' etc. - turned out I needed to put the jumper on backwards (as you can tell, I'm not very knowledgeable about these things) - then I did get the press F2/F7/F10 information on the splash screen. Unfortunately, I can press F2, F7 and F10 however much I want, the NUC doesn't seem to register this. I can see that the light on the keyboard is on and the keyboard does work when booting with the jumper removed, but here it doesn't seem to work. Well, then let's follow the instructions for Recovery BIOS update. I put the recovery 0028.bio-version on a USB drive, removed the jumper, and powered on the NUC. Screen doesn't receive input, and the NUC doesn't seem to do anything. Also doesn't seem to be reading any of the USB drives I tried. Once left it running for half an hour, just in case something was happening in the background, but still: nothing.

As said, the keyboard works (at least when given the 'security jumper removed, press 1 or 2' option), the monitor works, and I can see the USB drive light flashing (=being read) when trying to boot with the jumper installed, but the USB drive light stays off when trying to boot without the jumper, as if it's not even being read.

I have tried:

  • using a different USB drive for the BIOS update
  • using a different USB port for the USB drives
  • using a different HDMI cable
  • using a different screen (Samsung tv)

All to no avail. So: I can't boot from the SSD, I can't boot from the USB, I can't get into the BIOS and I can't update the BIOS, not even with the emergency method. So far, I can make the NUC do only 2 things:

  • remove the jumper and have the NUC tell me I should replace the jumper. Doesn't matter whether I press 1 or 2
  • put the jumper back and have the NUC tell me there's no bootable media, even though there is.

All other options lead to a black screen. By now I'm VERY frustrated and just about ready to throw the NUC against the wall (which would be unreasonable towards the wall, as it didn't do anything wrong) - please let me know what I could still do to resolve this issue!

D54250WYK Win8.1 and TSGH-IR02 Not Working Completely

Hi all,

I have a HP TSGH-IR02 windows remote control as recommended by these forums.  Using this remote and Windows 8.1 on my NUC D54250WYK, only a few of the buttons work (power, volume, arrows, and occasionally OK).  Most of the buttons, especially critical buttons like the Windows Start Menu button (right in the center of the remote) do not work.  My NUC does not react to them however I can see the remote is transmitting the signals because of the blinking LED.  I have installed the most recent Nuvoton CIR device driver for my model from the intel website and can see it functioning properly via device manager.  I also am on the most recent version of the BIOS.

I would like to know how to get all the buttons working on my remote, especially the Start Menu Button.

Thank you in advance.

D34010WYK crashes when HDMI is inactive

D34010WYK crashes when HDMI is inactive (unplugged, TV switches to another input or is turned off)

Using Microsoft drivers for graphics stops the crash but the first issue with that is HDMI audio stops working and secondly video playback quality drops.

I was planing on building 4-5 more of these but with this issue they are not going to be able to serve there intended purpose.

System Specs:

Windows 7

BOXD34010WYKH1

Samsung Electronics MZ-MTE120BW

HGST Travelstar 5K1500 1.5TB

G.SKILL F3-1600C9S-8GRSL

Video Driver Version:  10.18.10.3496

I'm going to try the beta and previous drivers, but if that doesn't fix.I guess i'm going to have to return this and go back to using cheap laptops which work but don't look as nice.

D54250WYKH - Wake - Never Does

$

I see many people with issues getting their NUC to sleep (constant reboot loop). I am having a different issue.

I would like my NUC to stay on full-time...or at least wake from sleep when requested.

  • I have set everything in Windows 7 to Never
  • I have changed settings in the bios numerous times to no avail.
  • I have changed power settings on the NIC

The NUC will not wake from:

  • WoL (wake-on-lan utility, and teamviewer WoL utility)
  • Mouse or Keyboard movement (I read this is by design)
  • Power button

My unit sleeps after 10 minutes:

  • Power light stays green
  • NIC light green with some activity

Pressing the power button does nothing

I end up having to hold the power button in to shut the NUC off completely - then power it back on.

I really need this to stay on 24-7 as my goal is to place NUCs in several locations that only have one single NUC, so no other devices on the network to send a WoL magic packet.

Thank you for any suggestions.

I was going between an SSD and a replacement NIC, and I lost the screw.  I've tried multiple sites to look it up on, to no avail.  By any miracle does anyone know what size this screw is, and/or where I can obtain a replacement?  Thanks a ton.

NUC D34010WYKH - HDMI Resets

I have a 34010WYKH running OpenELEC and BIOS 25 and am getting what appears to be frequent resets on the HDMI port.  I get an audible pop and then my TV will display the port name at the top of my screen as if I just selected that HDMI port.  I have a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable connect directly to my Sony Bravia TV.  I've tried two other cables and the results are the same.  Either sitting doing nothing or playing a movie it doesn't seem to make any difference.  The problem occurs randomly but 2-3 times an hour.  The TV goes black for 3-4 seconds, sound drops out and then it comes back like nothing happened.  Anyone have any suggestions as to what might be going on with it?

Broken U.FL connector - advice?

While building my second NUC, I managed to pull the tiny U.FL connector off of the end of the lead (connecting the antenna is, in my opinion, the single most annoying part of the build). It is not just a wire...it's a coaxial cable with braided ground sheath, and therefore not so easy to solder.

Does anyone have advice for fixing this? Seems like it's not so easy to get just a new wire (though you can get them already attached to Wi-Fi antennas).

I'm not sure if the warranty covers my own ineptitude.

DN2820FYK - More Issues

$
0
0

I have had my three DN2820FYK's for about a week now, and after having got the memory issues straightened out have gotten Windows 8.1 installed on all three and Plex Installed on all three to use as HTPC's. Here are some issue that are really annoying that i have discovered so far that are really annoying.

1. On one of my TV's, if i had a NUC connected to it via HDMI and any USB Device plugged into it (keyboard/mouse) it would get stuck at the Intel NUC Post Screen (Press F2 to Enter Bios, F7 Update Bios.....) I was pulling my hair out over this one, if i unplugged all USB devices from it it would boot into windows just fine. I then plugged the same NUC, with the same keyboard into another TV and it booted up fine with the keyboard attached. I then took plugged it back into the original TV and it would not boot again with a USB device attached to it. I plugged it into another TV again and was able to F2 into the BIOS, i looked around and saw where Fast Boot was disabled, as well as SecureBoot. I enabled both (and checked the box to install the intel key for secure boot). After doing both of those the computer will boot into windows just fine with a keyboard attached. However, how in the heck do you get back into the BIOS after you enable Fast Boot and/or Secure Boot? There is no longer a screen that says "press F2 to enter BIOS". If i plug a keyboard/mouse into the NUC they now do not even turn on until Windows starts to load. In windows i went into PC Settings and Recover and there is no option to do an advanced start up like there are on my other Windows 8.1 devices. I also tried running "shutdown /r /o" which should do the same thing but it says a parameter is incorrect. So my does enabling Fast Boot/Secure Boot in the BIOS disable you from re-entering the BIOS again? That would not make since.

2. My second, and more annoying issue is that if the NUC is completely powered off, and you power it on BEFORE the TV is turned on, the screen resolution gets messed up somehow. I have Plex (home theater application) set to auto launch after windows auto logs in and if the NUC is powered on and comes up before i turn on the TV then something happens to the resolution and the Plex Application's resolutions gets messed up and is is half way off the screen/on the screen. This never happened with my 3 Zotac Zbox's i had, i had the same setup on them (running plex, Windows 8.1, HDMI connectivity). I could power them on without the TV being on, then when i turned on the TV it was there ready to go at the correct resolution.

3. No DTS-MA/Dolby True HD, i have seen this posted here before, but if i go into my sound settings i see no HD formats listed under "Supported Formats" I am sure that is just a driver limitation, hopefully it is fixed.

Has anyone else had any of the issues above? I really need a solution to number 2 as that is the most annoying, it makes me really wish i didn't "upgrade" my Zotac Zboxs to the NUCs yet. I feel as if i should have waited for it to mature more. I guess that is a pain of being an early adopter though.

NUC HTPC Sound issues

Hello everyone,

Really hoping you can help.  I have recently purchased an Intel NUC system (i3, dual HDMI) and while I love the form factor and design I am having issues using this as a HTPC.  The system sets up flawlessly and I can use it to view and listen to whatever in a browser or via XBMC for streaming stuff from my NAS.  However, when I turn off all my components and come back to the system later there are no Audio devices detected.  The speaker in the task tray will show a red X and when I try to auto detect issues it doesn't find any audio devices.  The only resolution is to reboot the system.  I am running Windows 8 Pro and have tried both HDMI ports on the back.  Again, this only occurs when I turn off my other components and come back later to use the system.

My setup is the Intel NUC is connected to an HDMI port on the back of my Yamaha receiver.  My Yamaha receiver is then hooked up to my Samsung Plasma television.  It seems when the HDMI signal from the NUC to the receiver is lost, the audio device issues occurs when the receiver starts back up.  This isn't an issue with the receiver as I have tried the other 4 HDMI ports and all other devices work, and when I try the NUC on those the same issue occurs when I come back.  I am also positive of this as I have a Windows Home Server hooked up to the same setup via HDMI and the issue doesn't occur.  The Windows Home Server is 2011 and is running an i3 as well.

I looked through the BIOS on the NUC and couldn't find anything that would SEEM to cause this issue.  I am running the latest video HD4000 driver found on the intel NUC downloads site.

I am really at a loss, and unfortunately this is very frustrating.  Now, Windows 8 does reboot quickly, but I shouldn't have to do this each and every time I use the system.  I really hope you guys an help, otherwise I'll need to offload this great little device and try something else.

Regards,

S.

My NUC D54250WYKH  crashes a few time every day. It reboots after a BSOD. According to memory.dmp opened with WinDbg the problem is probably caused by igdkmd64.sys.

On the internet i found out this file is part of the Intel Graphic drivers. I have already installed the latest (beta) version from the website. How can I solve this problem?

D54250WYK 'headless' issue?

So I just recently received one of these new machines.

Overall I'm impressed but one thing I've noticed is that when no connected display is active - for example if the display port goes into a HDMI switch box which is switched to a different input - I cannot log into the NUC via VNC. Or more precisely, I can but I get a black screen. As soon as switch the display on/make the NUC the active input to the HDMI switch then VNC works fine. I'm using TightVNC on the NUC and I my client is Remotix, which I've tried from both iOS and OS X.

This is inferior to the first gen NUC where even if there was nothing active on the HDMI port you could still log in using VNC and the display would be labelled as 'Generic PnP Monitor'.

Is there anything I can do in software by way of configuration that could make the new NUC behave like the old one in this respect?

Or have I got to now faff about with EDID emulators and use the mini HDMI port instead of the mini DP?

No boot after updating Bios NUC n2820

Hello,

I launch for the first time the NUC n2820 this morning and all worked well (bios screen available).

After this first start, i would update the bios from v15 to v25 so i downloaded the file and put it on a usb key and press F7, i had the black screen with the installation status and it shutdown. I restart the NUC and no more screen view is available : totally a black screen, no display or signs of any other activity.

I tried the recoverymode (with v25 & 32) but no more luck.

What should i do ?

Thank you.
