NUC i5 with display going blank (NUC5i5RYH)

Among a few NUC's that I have is this NUC5i5RYH.     I had it in my living room for movie watching.

However, lately I've had multiple issues with the screen (and sound that comes from the mini-hdmi port) just stops.

It has happened wile looking at control panel settings, it has happened when watching a DVD.  It has also happened when the PC was sitting idle for a week.

I use a mini to regular HDMI adapter and a Samsung TV (Smart DVD - can supply model number if required)

Looking at a few threads with similar issues, can the support team advise

1)  Is there are a recommended BIOS and/or Video Driver version that is known to address this

2)  If related to power output , is there a way to increase this.  Would this happen when watching a video and it just goes blank. Does USB>HDMI solve this?

Many thanks and looking forward to solving this.

NUC6i3SYK network disconnect issue

We have a NUC6i3SYK here with an Intel SSD drive. 8GB RAM. Windows 10 Pro.

It is connected by ethernet (wireless disabled).

A few times a day the Internet will just stop working. And the adapter has to be manually disabled and re-enabled, which doesn't always work, or the unit rebooted, or one has to go through network diagnosis/troubleshooting for it to work again. Any ideas?

Intel has released a firmware update for the TB3 controller. The download page lacks the release notes/changelog. The PDF on the page shows the update for FW Ver 18....

What is new in FW 25?

Can Intel please include a changelog+releasenotes with every driver/firmware/bios update?

Fan noise D54250WYK, and other models...any definitive solution yet?

$

I've read a lot of posts about whining fan noise on several models of Intel's NUC, and am wondering if there is something I've overlooked.

The only proactive solution I've seen, other than modifying the enclosure or adding external components, is to reduce the fan operation from 40% to something less, but not less than 25%.  I've taken the fan down to about 28% in BIOS, and see very minimal reduction in noise.  According to the application Core Temp, both cores of my 5450 are running around 140 - 150 degrees F, which may be about 10 degrees hotter than when the fan was set to 40% in BIOS.

This issue was not something I experienced when I first bought the NUC, about 3 years ago, and since I'm operating with the latest BIOS, I am wondering if it is a BIOS issue.

If anyone has any insights, please let me know.  The NUC is about 6 feet from my monitor and keyboard, and is mounted vertically to the back side of a desk.  As I write this, with Chrome open with 6 tabs, I can hear the fan noise.  It does seem to abate somewhat when I'm not browsing the Internet with Chrome or Edge.  (Running Chrome with just one tab open presents no appreciable reduction in fan noise, but does seem to reduce the temperature a few degrees, but that is a moving number of course.)

This is a D54250WYK H13922-304, with serial # GEWY43202UP with an i5-4250U operating at 1.90Ghz, no overclocking or hyperthreading.  I installed a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB mSATA SSD and have two 8GB DIMM sticks of RAM installed.

NUC6CAYS - Random boot freeze

Hi,

I'm experiencing boot Issue with the NUC6CAYS + Ubuntu Server 16.04.02 LTS (kernel 4.8), Ubuntu Server 17.04 (kernel 4.10) and even with the UEFI USB Installer.

  • BIOS Version 0038 / HDMI 2.0 Firmware fix.
  • Default values in bios except: eMMC is disabled + supervisor password set ( I tried without a supervisor set too). Also tried the UEFI OS Selection to Linux, same issue
  • ADATA SP550 SSD is installed inside

Here is the story:

  • First I installed Ubuntu Server 16.04.02 LTS with HWE Stack (Kernel 4.8), everything was working fine BUT I noticed that sometimes, after a reboot, my NUC was stuck on a black screen right after the GRUB Menu.

  • I decided to give Kernel 4.10 a try so I installed Ubuntu Server 17.04 (kernel 4.10) and nothing else except updates. I did a small script to restart the computer every 30 seconds or so and again, randomly, the NUC was not rebooting. I see the GRUB Menu with Ubuntu selected and after the 2 seconds timeout, screen go black and nothing more happen.

  • After hours and hours of debugging and trying to find what the problem was, I decided to use a brand new SSD (same model) that I had on hand.
    • Disconnected the power of the NUC
    • Replaced my SSD
    • Connected my Ubuntu Server 17.04 USB installer made with Rufus
    • Connected power
    • Started NUC
    • Pressed F10 on boot, selected my USB and displayed the GNU GRUB Menu where I selected * Install Ubuntu Server and.....the same issue occurred,  black screen and nothing!!
    • I restarted the computer and tried it again... this time the Ubuntu Server installer started correctly.
    1. Boot
    2. Wait for GRUB Menu (eMMC is disabled and ssd brand new, so the USB boot automatically)
    3. Press Enter to start installation
    4. If the installer start, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and do it again.
  • I did it again, and again, again, at least 30 times without any issue than, after many retries same problem, black screen and nothing!

It's totally Random and really seems to be a BIOS issue to me since this time. When the black screen happen, ctrl+alt+del do nothing. I have to long press the power button for about 5 seconds to power off the NUC.

I should have a brand new NUC6CAYH tomorrow to test if it's specific to my NUC or not, since I already have NIC issue with this one but I need it for development (NUC6CAYS - Ethernet Issue )

Thanks a lot for support

Issue:

Since upgrading to the newest bios BNKBL357.86A.0048.EB.EXE my display periodically goes blank (black) for a few seconds and then returns to normal.  This happens several times an hour.

All drivers are up to date according to the Intel Update utility.  Video driver version is 15.45.19.4678.

I am using Windows 10 64 bit, version 1703,  OS build15063.483

It looks a lot like this:

I'm running Windows 10 Pro on a NUC5i5RYH with an Intel SSDSC2KW240H6.  The system unexpectedly restarts every day or so and often displays the following message on the UEFI boot screen when it tries to boot up again: "A bootable device has not been detected."  It continues to display that message if I restart using Ctrl-Alt-Del.  I have to do a cold boot using the power button to get past the error message.  The system then boots normally.  I don't see any record in the Windows Event Log for why the unexpected restarts are occurring in the first place.  I'm using the latest firmware, RYBDWi35.86A.0364.2017.0511.0949.  This problem only started occurring some time after I upgraded to this SSD.  I previously used a spinning disk.

NUC7I3BNK - Duel Display Woes

$

Hi All,

I bought two NUC7I3BNK as we've used the older NUC's without any issues and we love the form factor.

The problem I am experiencing is similar to other issues I've read on the forum but all of the suggested fixes have not worked for us.

I want to connect 2 x 1920 x 1080 displays to the NUC's. We have done this successfully on the previous NUC's with no problems using Adapter to VGA.

Configuration is as follows:

1 x display connected via HDMI -> VGA adapter (Amazon.com: StarTech.com HDMI to VGA Adapter – 1080p – 1920 x 1200 – Black – HDMI Converter – VGA to HDMI Monitor Adapte… )

1 x display connected via DisplayPort 1.2 -> VGA adapter (Amazon.com: StarTech.com USB-C to VGA Adapter – Thunderbolt 3 Compatible – USB C Adapter – USB Type C to VGA Dongle Conv… )

If I have only the HDMI port in use then there is no problem, as soon as I plug in the DisplayPort, both screens start flickering on and off not staying on longer than 2 seconds.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here? I know there are issues with 3 x 4K screens but this is standard 2 x 1920x1080 screens for office work.

Hardware spec is as follows:

1 x NUC7I3BNK.

1 x AD-SSDM2SU8001-128GB - ADATA SSD SU800 M.2 PCIE 2280 128GB 80MM 3D NAND

1 x AD-DDR4S-2133-4GB - Adata 4GB DDR4 2133 SO-DIMM Single Tray

1 x HDMI -> VGA adapter (Amazon.com: StarTech.com HDMI to VGA Adapter – 1080p – 1920 x 1200 – Black – HDMI Converter – VGA to HDMI Monitor Adapte… )

1 x DisplayPort 1.2 -> VGA adapter (Amazon.com: StarTech.com USB-C to VGA Adapter – Thunderbolt 3 Compatible – USB C Adapter – USB Type C to VGA Dongle Conv… )

NUC7I5BNH keeps freezing/crashing in Windows 10, constant flickering with 4k@60Hz

So like many others I'm having a number of problems with my NUC7I5BNH that doesn't resume from sleep properly and keeps freezing even when it's set to not sleep.  First, here's my hardware:

NUC7I5BNH

Windows 10 x64 Pro running Creator's Update

PNY CS2030 240GB M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - (M280CS2030-240-RB)

1 x G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB DDR4 2400 Model F4-2400C16S-8GRS

I've connected to two different displays that have both exhibited similar behavior

Vizio m55-C2 4k TV

CROSSOVER 324K UHD 32" 3840x2160 60Hz HDMI2.0 DP 4K LED Monitor

All drivers are up to date and I have updated the HDMI 2.0 firmware.

If I try to run at 3140x2160 @ 60Hz, the display flickers frequently, with it sometimes being so bad that the computer is completely unusable.  Running KODI, NETFLIX, or even just some websites in Chrome seem to make the problem worse.  The only thing that makes the flickering go away is if I go to 4k@30Hz or go down to 1080p at 60Hz.  I am using amazon basics hdmi 2.0 cables that worked fine driving 4k@60Hz with my 5th generation NUC so I'm fairly certain it's not the cable.

In addition to the flickering issues, the computer would not wake either monitor when it resumed from sleep >50% of the time and had to be reset using the power button.  As a temporary solution, I disabled sleep entirely and that seemed to fix the problem.  HOWEVER, after upgrading the HDMI 2.0 firmware, I'm now seeing another similar problem but I have no idea what is going on.  After the display is turned off after 10 minutes, it eventually powers off but the computer is set to never sleep. When I power on the TV again, >50% of the time, the computer has frozen.  This is different than the previous behavior because before I could remotely login to the computer and restart it.  Now it is completely unresponsive and can't even be pinged.  It requires a hard reboot to get the computer to respond again.  I have looked in the event viewer and can't figure out why the computer is crashing.  There is an error message that says something like: "The previous system shutdown was unexpected." but gives no more information about the error.  Again, this problem seems to have started happening after updating the HDMI firmware.  Is there any way to check the current firmware version and is it possible the update went wrong somehow?

The only BIOS setting I have changed is disabling HDMI CEC (I can't remember if I enabled it in the first place or if it was on by default).

Please help!  I am at a complete loss as to what else to do to fix this problem and, as it stands, the NUC is hardly usable.

NUC6i7KYK - screen flickering issue.

Hello,

My configuration is:

NUC6i7KYK connected to LG UHD 4K 55UH605V via HDMI cable, screen resolution is set to 3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz

Latest BIOS 00.48

Latest Display Driver 21.20.16.4678

HDMI 2.0 Firmware 0x20

I'm using Intel Driver Update Utility and all drivers are up to date.

I need to play a bit to make my screen stop flickering, normally when I boot the NUC my screen is flickering with configuration 3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz, so to solve the issue I need to go to both Intel Graphics Settings and Windows Display Adapter Properties and do one of the 2 below scenarios:

1. Go to Intel Graphics Settings, switch to 30Hz and then go to Windows Display Adapter Properties and switch back to 60Hz.

2. Opposite to above, go to Windows Display Adapter Properties, switch to 30Hz then go to Intel Graphics Settings and switch back to 60Hz.

Switching back and forth in either Windows Display Adapter Properties orIntel Graphics Settings doesn't help. Strange, isn't it?

After the reboot issue is re-occurring.

Issue: Flickering - YouTube

I tested 3 different HDMI cables, I have now quite a collection at home, all cables are High Speed with Ethernet.

As I can see in other threads, this issue is still not fixed after almost a year and occurs in combination NUC HDMI -> 4K UHD TV.

I'm not interested of using DP port with adapter.

NUC6i7KYK won't boot from USB 3 Blu-ray drive

The BIOS does not recognize the Pioneer BDR-207DBK in a NexStar external enclosureand the system boots Linux (Mint 18.1) off the internal SSD.  I do have the BIOS set to boot from USB first.  I then need to power cycle the Blu-ray drive to have it recognized in Linux or eject the disk.  If I change to a USB 2 cable I am able to boot from the drive.  Once I am in Linux I am able to access the drive with the USB 3 cable.  I have updated to the latest BIOS for both the NUC and Blu-ray drive with no change.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Yet more NUC7i7BNH issues; this time dual display blackout

Upgraded to latest BIOS just today and my 2nd display (Samsung SyncMaster SA850 27-inch monitor) is now completely black. The Samsung is using a USB-C-to-DVI cable (bought on Amazon here) and was working fine for weeks until my BIOS update today. I think the HDMI 2.0 firmware I installed a few weeks back had something to do with this issue today, as I also had to change adapters when doing this stupid HDMI firmware update. Please let me know if this is a simple fix, it REALLY shouldn't be so difficult to get dual displays to work, but NUCs really seem terrible at it. My main ASUS 27-inch display on HDMI port works just fine.

See CPU-Z output for my setup data.
