NUC6CAYS NIC dissapearing

$

Hello,

I have an issue with multiple NUC6CAYS NUC's.

I have 12 of those running as video playback devices.

Now I started to notice that in seemingly random intervals the NUC's completely lose their ethernet connectivity.

When checking the player it looks like the NIC just disappeared, it is nowhere to be found in the windows device manager or in the network adapter settings.

The only solutions I have found so far is turning off the device for approx. 10min. and restarting it. Normal reboots without the waiting period don't work.

Since these devices are deployed in a professional environment this is not a solution.

Hopefully there will be a solution for this soon.

Black screen marantz nr1603 with NUC7i5BNH

Hello

Getting black screen with my new NUC- very gutted!  Works ok when directly connected to samsung TV.

Now this means I lose ability to switch via AV receiver and lose 5.1 surround.

NUC fully up to date inc BIOS and HDMI 2.0 firmware.. although I believe the AMP is only HDMI 1.3 maybe that the issue.

Too much to ask for a dev to make me a patch? :-)

CEC doesnt seem to work properly too, it does switch source when it turns on, but anynet cant select the device I have to switch source manually.

I can play with screen resolution via team viewer and TV reports no signal mostly.  When I switch to 1024x768, TV says incorrect resolution so something is getting through.

Called support and the very knowledgeable Alfred is looking into it for me.  I was surprised how good the support was TBH :-)

NUC5I3MYBE I2C clock frequency

Hi

Does anybody know for sure which I2C speed mode is used for the Synopsys DesignWare I2C bus on the custom solution header?

I'm using Debian Stretch. The bus is working, but I need to connect a device which can only be used in standard mode, so 100kHz.

Fast mode with 400kHz would be too fast.

If the NUC uses 400kHz by default, how can I change that in an easy way?

Tech Spec doesn't say anything about it and even Google didn't help.

Cheers, Martin

Skull Canyon fails to boot from time to time

I have one of the more annoying issues ever which would simply won't go away.

Some background first:

I'm using a Windows 10 x64 PC with BitLocker encryption backed by TPM.

In every 3-4 COLD boots at the beginning of the day i would get a message from windows at boot time that the TPM is unavailable, and because of that windows could not automatically DE-crypt my drive, and i should use the recovery key instead.

At this point more often than not, i cannot even do that because my keyboard isn't working until i disconnect the usb hub cable, and reconnect it.

At this point there is a simple work-around, to simply press CTRL-ALT-DELETE and perform a warm boot. The next boot ALWAYS work using the TPM which is available at this point. Notice i cannot reproduce the issue using warm boots.

In addition do note that i usually leave the machine completely unplugged for several hours / days to save power.

Sometimes the problem escalates to the point the BCD data is corrupted, and a manual repair is needed. But this is far more rare.

My boot settings are: Fastboot disabled , secureboot enabled, and TPM is active and used for BitLocker.

I'm using the latest available BIOS (49)

Hi all,

We are aware of this issue and a bug was opened a couple weeks ago.  The developers/engineers are working on finding a solution and I will post any updates and/or solutions here.

Thank you for your patience.

Graphics driver xxx_4771 win 10 1709: some suggestion to survive until next upgrade

$

Now it sure: the new driver 4771 with new win 10 upgrade to 1709 generate big problem for those who use NUC as HPTC.
In my case all the old setting of graphic card and Kodi 17 give flickering image. There is no way to solve problem; also if you put fix FPS your TV will be flichering:

After many hours of attempts I found a solution enough to wait for INTEL to solve the problem and hope it will be soon.
Obviously I do not guarantee this solution works for everyone.
I did configured video  to work with a 60p FPS (using INTEL utility) and I configured Kodi (v 17.4) so I did not change FPS, I also disabled in Kodi dvxa2 acceleration (otherwise i will have stairs of pixel when decode H265) .
This way, you get a fresh result, hoping how I said, that INTEL resolves soon:

I repeat that I cannot stand the INTEL & MICROSOFT pair anymore, the more trouble I have over this NUC than the pleasant times of use.

regards Antonino

PS:
i did tried to downgrade the video driver but seems that with win 10 1709 the old driver are not certificated anymore. So wuold be necessary to downgrade also windows 10 to 1703. I prefer wait for Intel's solution

NUC Kit selection suggestion for server programming

$

Hi,

Am planning to use Intel NUC Kits for server programming with Virtualization/Containers.

Here are my requirements :

  • NUC Kit (1 or 2)
  • i5/i7 Processor should support virtualization (vt-d or vt-x), good enough for a mini-data center(not so pricey)
  • 32GB RAM
  • 500GB SSD
  • Ubuntu latest stable release , for linux distro install
  • Windows install - dualboot , if possible
  • 2 network ports
  • containers(docker) to be used
  • Virtualization / Virtual machines
  • Container orchestration (Kubernetes) to be used
  • Out of the Box Kits are welcome, instead of custom build
  • Personal use, server and virtualization programming

Optionally, will add more kits of same spec, once the first NUC kit is successful.

Please throw in your suggestions, Thanks!

No display on new Intel NUC6CAYH

Hi,

I got my NUC (NUC6CAYH) today and was very excited until I found out there is no video output. Below are what I put in the NUC:

- 1x Crucial 4GB 204-Pin SODIMM DDR3 PC3-14900 1866 MT/s Memory Module from B&H Photo Video

- 256GB SSD

- USB flash drive with Ubuntu 16.04

I tried to connect a 1080p monitor with both VGA and HDMI. Neither of them gave display on the screen. The screen was tested with other computer and it worked fine. I tried to use the upper RAM slot and lower RAM slot, and neither of them worked. The blue power button light was on after I pressed it to power on and there was no blinking/flashing on the power button light during start up. I was able to reboot the machine once with "Ctrl+Alt+Del" and saw the power light went off and then on.

Can some one explain me what else I should try to bring out the display?

If nothing work, should I contact Intel or the seller (B&H) for refund/replacement?

Thanks in advance!

Hey,

I have a Intel NUC DC3217IYE and want to use it as Media Center. For that i want to put it in a passive cooling case.

I looked on the internet, but just found cases for 3rd gen and newer nucs.

Does somebody know, if there are cases for 2nd gen nucs as well, and can you recommend me one?

NUC6i7KYK, Shutdown after/during Windows 10 install

$

Hey everyone,

I've had previous NUC - never such a problem and almost going crazy here after spending multiple hours on this box. Basically the NUC automatically shuts down before the Win10 installation completes, right after it reboots.

Intel® NUC Kit NUC6i7KYK

- updated latest bios (0050), reset to default values

- SSD: 600p Series 128GB, M.2

- RAM: Kingston ValueRam 8GB PC4-2133 CL15 260-Pin SODIMM KVR21S15S8_8

I'm unable to install Windows 10 on it, via USB, and also via Network Re-Image. I've tried RAM and SSD both in different slots.

Even created a brand new bootable USB image. When booting it it will not even fully load the image and NUC will shut down.

Official Win10 USB Stick: Setup running through, when Windows does the reboot during install it doesn't come back up.

Occasionally giving the error:

"The Computer Restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click OK to restart the computer and then restart the installation"

With that error there went to regedit HKLocal machine/SYSTEM/SETUP/STATUS/ChildCompletion > setup.exe. Changed value from 1 to 3 and rebooted. Not coming up again.

Same with network re-image. As soon as Windows should be starting it's

BIOS

Default, Fast Boot and Secure boot are off, tried disabling Round Trip Latency Optimization for Memory.

Never experienced this with Windows 10 and used the Win10 USB sticks for other NUC previously.

Would really appreciate your thoughts on this.

Thanks!

Creators Update Fall 1709 + NUC7i7BNH = "display resolution not supported"

$

Hi,

I have been using my NUC7i7BNH for a while, running Win 10 Pro 1703 connected to reciver and TV with HDMI.

Yesterday I got a new harddrive (Samsung 960 EVO 256GB NVME) and did a clean install with a Win 10 Pro 1709 (Creators Update Fall) ISO.

After installation a few minutes went by, the screen flickers and then goes black. Try to restart but the TV just says “display resolution not supported”. Perform restore to an earlier system restore point (probably before the update/driver was installed). The display works again and everything is OK. But after a few minutes the same thing happens again. Unplug my Ethernet cable and do yet another restore. This time the machine is running considerably longer. Download the Intel drivers from my laptop and install them on the NUC from a USB-drive. When I get do the display driver (Intel® HD Graphics Driver for Windows® 10 for Intel® NUC Kit NUC7i3BN, NUC7i5BN, and NUC7i7BN Version: 15.46.05.4771 (Latest) Date: 9/11/2017 ) the same thing happens again – no display.

Then tries to connect the NUC to my PC monitor and it works perfectly. Do a few restarts, wait a while etc… Everything works. Then connect it to the TV again – no picture – “display resolution not supported”. (Note: I have tried to connect the NUC directly to the TV without passing the receiver, but it didn´t help).

Gave up and switched back to my old hard drive with 1703 and that of course worked. Is the Intel display driver not fully compatible with 1709 Creators update?

NUC Skull Slow WiFi Download Speeds

The internet speeds to my house are 50 Mbps down/up. I'm getting only around 25-30 Mbps down to my NUC Skull. The upload speeds are in the high 40s as expected. (This is all via WiFi.)

Any ideas what would cause the slower download speeds?

I saw another thread with a similar issue. I've followed some trouble shooting steps advised there:

I am trying to use the Sonnet eGFX thunderbult with the NUC7i5BNH.  When i have it plugged in I am not getting video.  Has anyone gotten a external video to work on the new NUCs?  I am running Windows 10 build 1703 which should fall when in specs.

Stuttering with Plex media server (1080p and 4k) and playback of 4k content on VLC

Hi,

I have two issues which I was hoping the community could help with:

1) Playback from a PLEX media server stutters with 4K and FHD content. Internet connection is more than adequate: wired, 100mb.

2) Playback of 4k content (stored on my NUC - 1TB SSD) using VLC player stutters. Unusually, there is no stuttering when playing the same 4K content using the native Windows player.

Any help or guidance on these issues would be appreciated..... hopefully it's a simple fix  :-)

NUC7i5BNH, Linux and Bluetooth not working

$

So I know Linux isn't 'officially' supported by Intel, but maybe I can get some help with this issue anyway.

I've just purchased the above NUC today, and installed Linux Mint 18.2 on it. Everything is running fine, except for the Bluetooth. To be honest I'm not sure if this is a distro or a driver issue. I've scoured Google looking for a solution to no avail. I've upgraded the BIOS, tried  installing new Bluetooth Packages and a couple of other suggested fixes, but the issue is still present and the Bluetooth Adapater can't be found.,

Any help with this would be great,

Thanks.

NUC CPU fan left turned on after ESXi shutdown

$

In a nutshell, the only issue I have with the NUC system is, the CPU fan would left turned on after ESXi shutdown while the NUC power button would be turned off. To turn the system back on with the power button, I would need to first pressing the power button for 5 seconds or so until the fan is turned off (the system is then forcefully powered off), only then I can turn the system back on again by pressing the power button normally. This annoys me as if I forgot to force the units to go down completely, I'd find the units are warm in the next morning and I don't have air conditioning running all the time. I had done a bit of research and did try a few things and unfortunately I had not found a solution to this, yet. I have two NUC units with the same parts and EXSi, both have the same experience.

Would appreciate your advise on what I should try.

And as much as I'd like to get some support regarding the above subject, I'd like share on this thread my experience of running ESXi 6.5 on the NUC units.

Important hardware and firmware remarks

  • For those planning to run ESXi 6.5 or similar, and for those planning to run Linux operating system on the NUC with Intel SSD 600P, I highly recommend that the SSD is updated with firmware version 121C (or better if available)
  • There were issues reported running Linux on the Intel SSD 600P, at the time I'm writing this only Microsoft Windows versions listed on the 600P product page are 'officially' supported
  • Having said, I had see reports on this forum and others that firmware version 121C works good for certain Linux flavors, and for me, ESXi - see also important notes on the NVMe driver for ESXi

BIOS configuration - configured according to article here by William Lam and article here by Erik Bussink - in summary, I have the following BIOS settings. I'm listing them for reference, not that I know what each of the settings meant

VMware ESXi

  • Installed on the USB boot drive
  • Updated to ESXi 6.5.0 Update 01 Build 5969303 here
  • Two data store on each NUC, each data store fully occupy each 600P

Very important remarks

  • Replace the stock NVMe driver that came with ESXi with the one built specifically for Intel SSD here
    • After the update, it showed intel-nvme instead of nvme as the driver for the storage adapter
    • You'll see on the driver page that the model 600P isn't listed, but the driver worked well for me so far
  • I did the driver update after I had applied the ESXi 6.5.0 Update 01
  • And prior to that, I had both of the 600P low-level formatted with HDAT2 (by verify/write/verify), the tool is listed here here

The catch was, without the intel-nvme adapter driver, I had painful experience working on the ESXi platform with the NUC system - obviously the system or its parts are not ESXi HCL listed

  • Copying virtual machine folders from one ESXi data store to another ESXi data store that was created on another 600P on the same NUC would usually fail before 20% completion
    • ESXi would lose connectivity to the data store that it was writing after the error
    • I had to reboot to recover from the situation
  • Or, similarly, copying virtual machine folders to/from the same data store would also result in similar experience
  • Or, deploying virtual machines with thick disk mode (-diskmode eagerZeroedThick) with the VMware ovftool would also result in similar experience
    • Having said that, I didn't get any issue deploying virtual machines with thin disk mode

Post updating ESXi with the intel-nvme driver, I had tested the system to PASS the above test cases which failed 100% previously

Edits: there are 3 items attached to each NUC units

  • The DC power plug
  • The USB boot drive
  • Cat5e network cable

No other items are connected other than the items above. Specifically I don't have any type of displays attached to the units.
