Video issues!

I am having constant screen flickers and blackouts. I have tried various remedies including all recommended driver updates. I am currently running the Radeon 18.6.1 driver and Intel 630 version 24.20.100.6136 driver. If I were to guess I suspect it has to do with HDCP not working correctly as I sometimes get a green screen that corrects after unplugging video cable that is HDMI at the moment.

Funny thing is that if I uninstall the AMD drivers package I get flawless video. Of course I get no sound through the HDMI cable but video problems go away and video runs at 64hz. Video really is good this way even at full 4k so I may just work around the sound issue. any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.

LED issues

I've got problems with the LED's not turning off after (what I think is a) Windows 10 Pro Auto Sleep feature, its not all LED's either, Front LED 1 and 2 works as expected, but the rest (Power Button, Skull, Eyes and Front LED 3) gets stuck in the last configured state after this happens, after installing the latest BIOS, with some hassle by underclocking the RAM, an hard power reset (unplugging the power) seems to solve this issue and its also the only thing that solves it, even though it's pretty annoying when it happens. Does anyone else have this? The Windows LED configure tool think it changes the LED's but nothing happens with the mentioned LED's, changing Front LED 1 & 2 works however. Even if I try to sleep, hibernate or shut down the device completely from Windows the LED's are still on after this happens.

Also, is is normal that the chassis seems to have a small gap that makes the led create a stripe of light underneath the unit like this?

On my NUC8i7HVK appears a problem after most cycles of monitor sleep and wakeup.

Just after wakeup screen looks noisy like attached photo and every time I need to detach monitor and attach again or reboot PC to makes it normal (another attached photo).

BIOS update to version 0044 do not fix this problem.

Enable or disable Intel HD Graphics in BIOS settings also do not take effect (now disabled).

I uses latest available for download Radeon graphic drivers 24.20.11016.4.

Problem appears on any connection type HDMI or mDP with any resolution from 1920x1200 to 2560x1600.

NUC 7i5BNH does not output 4K@60p with 10-bit YCbCr420 color + HDR

Hi all,

Just got myself a new LG 65B7 TV

Hooked my NUC to it - it switched to 4K automatically.

I has also able to change the output to 60Hz via the Intel management utility.

However, I do not see an option to change the color depth or format.

I saw some screen captures in other topics where people have an "advanced" in the "display" menu - while I do not.

Is it something I have to enable somehow?

Maybe the missing settings are hiding there...

Anyway, my current settings are stuck at 4K@60p with 8-bit YCbCr420, and I do not see any way to change those.

Updated the graphics drivers, flashed HDMI firmware, flashed BIOS, Windows is updated to the creators update.

Regarding HDR - I do see the toggle - but when toggled - it just goes back to being off.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi intel_corp

Following on from your message here:Re: Nuc7i7bnh noise level

You said "you can always clean it for example twice a month to make sure it is not accumulating dust."

Can you please share instructions on the best way to clean the NUC7i7BNH from dust?

I don't want to damage the fan's ball bearings, for example.

Can you share photos or even better a video on the best and safest method please?

Appreciated

Verified the M.2 slot is enabled in BIOS Setup:

  1. Press the F2 key during boot to enter BIOS Setup.
  2. Select Advanced> Devices> PCI.

M2 shows in PCI not in Boot devices

How do I get the 512 GB device to boot?

Using Intel SSDPEKKW512GB

Can see drive in BIOS, PCI but not in Boot

Can use another tool and see that the drive is bootable.

no boot device after power fail

Hi,

My Nuc7i5bnk is working correctly but I have one issue.

If I enables "power on" after power fail in the bios settings my NUC doesn't see my "Kingston sa1000m8" drive. When u press the power button and turn the machine off and on the device is working correctly.

When i hit F2 after power fail my drive isn't listed. I tried it with UEFI boot and Legacy boot. But that doesn't make a divergence, no boot device after power failure.

Updatet the bios to the latest version, but still not working.

Wake-up from RTC is working.

Any ideas how to solve this?

Kind Regards,

Matthijs

NUC7i5BNH after bios update doesn't boot anymore

Hello,

have a NUC7i3BNH and today I did a bios update from 0063 to 0065 (BNKBL357.86A), I did the update from the bios menu. Everything seemed to work fine but the last step (can't remember the name) I saw a failed.. the nuc rebooted and then I couldn't make it work anymore.

I passed all day looking for info on how to do the recovery and followed all the procedures I could find from the official doc: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005532/mini-pcs.html

To discussions about very similar issues:

https://communities.intel.com/thread/118882

https://communities.intel.com/thread/123223

Nothing is working. the current situation is this:

The nuc has only one RAM DIMM inserted. I formatted several USB keys with the bios file on them (I tried the last 4 versions).

Security bios jumper off, right now, it wont turn on. I connect the power, the power button is orange, I press it it flashes blue and then turns off.

Security bios jumper 1,2 turns on but it loops every 30 seconds or so

jumpers 3,4 same thing.

No video output (I have a USBC and hdmi monitor, nothing on both ports).

I have the feeling this unit is done... I bought it a little more than 1 month ago and used it only a few times...

Thank you for any suggestions.

NUC7PJYH UEFI Booting with noinitrd or initramfs

I'm having trouble booting a "Live"  USB. This image claims to be bootable on legacy bios and UEFI only hardware.

It does boot fine on legacy bios (UEFI class 0) machines but it hangs on "Loading Linux.." on my NUCS  (UEFI class 3)

I tried 2 different bootloaders.

The permanent SSDs on these NUCs both are running Debian Stretch dual-booting with other OSs but they have initrd images

*The current Live USB I am testing was designed / is configured for  running with no initrd or initramfs, relying only on /sbin/init to get inital rootfs mounted.

I flipped on and of the legacy bios flag on the ESP partition and added commandline bootparams as well as recompiled the kernel.

My question is does the UEFI firmware of this box need to see an initrd or initramfs image at boot time; configured in the bootloader?

Thx

CEC Problem: Turn on NUC when TV is turned on does not work.

$

Hello from Germany.

With bios version 0038 my Intel NUC6cayh wakes from S3/S4/S5 power state when TV is turned on.

After updating to BIOS 0048 my TV (Philips 42PFL7655K) recognizes the NUC as new CEC

device when CEC (Philips EasyLink) is turned on, but the NUC does not wake up when TV is turned on,

respectively when the connected hdmi device is selected. Downgrading to BIOS version 0042 did not

solve the problem.

I have tried the following setting in BIOS:

Advanced -> Devices -> VIDEO -> IDG Primary Video Port  set to HDMI

-> HDMI CEC Control -> Checked

-> TV HDMI Port HDMI 1

                    -> Wake On TV -> From S3/S4/S5

Fast Boot and Deep S4/S5 are disabled in BIOS Setup.

If Auto Turn On TV is enabled the TV turns on when NUC is turned on but the other way does not work.

Any advice on what to do would be appreciated or is there a safe way to go back to bios version 0038.

Thanks in advance

Memory errors? NUC7i5BNH with Crucial 16GB Memory

Hi,

I am currently experiencing multiple BSOD errors particularly on startup and intermittently during normal operation.

I have reinstalled windows, updated drivers, tried everything I can think of other than replacing my RAM. I have run memory check but it does not find errors.

Does anyone know of any compatibility issues with Crucial 16GB DDR4 2133MHz Non-EEC SODIMMs and the NUC7i5BNH NUC? I am usingone of these memory sticks in slot #1. Part no. CT16G4SFD8213.

Thanks,

Nick

8i7HVK - rear 3.5mm audio port 'noisy' when Nuc under load, front fine

$

I've had a nuc 8i7HVK Hades Canyon nuc for a few weeks - and just got some new speakers which I plugged into the rear 3.5mm audio jack.

When the nuc isn't under load the speakers play music without noise (hissing / interference) fine. But when I play a game (Civilization 6), and the nuc is under load - all sorts of audio interference comes out of  the speakers.

When I move the audio plug to the front 3.5mm jack - it works perfectly and the noise is gone.

Is this a design flaw? How can I fix this?

Thanks

Nick

8i7HVK, Chrome window intermittently black on scrolling, Visual studio font disappearing

$

When using Chrome (Version 66.0.3359.18) in Windows 10 1803 (OS build 17134.81) - various web pages turn black while I'm scrolling the page - the tabs at the top also disappear sometimes.

I've never seen this on any other computer, and Firefox doesn't seem to be affected.

Can you confirm what the latest graphic driver is - is it listed on your 8i7HVK download page?

Downloads for Intel® NUC Kit with 8th Generation Intel® Core™ Processors

Is that the correct page to get the latest video & other drivers?

(I had someone recommend a newer audio driver than is listed there - which makes me question it).

I have this video driver:

GFX_Radeon_Win10_64_23.20.792.2048

In Visual Studio the font sometimes goes black - both in the Solution Explorer and in the main code window.

Thanks.

8i7HVK Nuc - 1 of 3 monitors doesn't turn on after sleep, windows on wrong screen

$

I have 3x 4K monitors at 60Hz connected to 8i7HVK Nuc.

When wake from sleep - say in the morning after going to Start / Sleep the night before - one of the monitors doesn't turn on. I have to press the power button and re-select Display Port as an input - then it comes on.

This only started happening a few weeks ago - when I first got this Nuc all monitors turned on correctly.

Further - when waking from sleep - windows are all moved around onto different monitors.

All displays are confirmed at 4K@60Hz - 2 connected via mDP to mDP - and the third (the one that wont automatically come on) is Thunderbold 3 to DP.

(I've tried HDMI on the non working monitor - but it doesn't seem to support 10-bit colour - and I think DP is a better standard that I'd rather use in any case).

This is extremely bad and irritating and is massively disrupting my work.

I have the latest Radeon graphics driver from this page:

Downloads for Intel® NUC Kit NUC8i7HVK

18.5.1 (13 Jun 2018)

My monitors:

LG 27UD68P-B

LG 27UD58-B (this is model that wont turn on after sleep)

DELL P2415Q

When will you fix this? It seems Nucs always have substandard graphics drivers - I'm hearing from other users with similar issues.

Thx.

NUC7i5BNH CPU package C-States/SpeedShift - UEFI Legacy boot issues

$
0
0

Hi all,

l got a NUC7i5BNH from a couple of months which does not work as expected, I'll try to make it clear to understand and reproduce.

My previous NUC was a Skylake one, so starting with the new Kaby Lake unit I soon noticed it couldn't reach CPU package C-States lower than C2 in Windows 10 when CPU is idle and the display is powered on:

this produces higher temperatures, higher power consumption and higher noise than expected (and necessary), so I started investigating from BIOS configuration.

After some testing, and with my great surprise, I found that "Legacy boot" option disabled was the culprit for this behaviour.

Premises:

- Unit is NUC7i5BNH equipped with 2x16GB RAM Crucial CT2K16G4SFD8213 and M.2 2280 AHCI SSD Crucial CT500MX200SSD4 MX200

- Operating system used for testing is always an UEFI clean install of Windows 10 x64 1803 up to date (latest build 17134.12) with no crap/trash, just a clean system for testing purpose

- Drivers are up to date as per NUC7i5BNH Intel support page

- UEFI firmware is up to date (BNKBL357.86A Version 0065 6/6/2018)

- BIOS was always flashed via jumper recovery (F9 default settings loaded after power off and power chord uplug)

- NUC is connected to a DELL display via HDMI port or to a Samsung Smart TV via HDMI port (both display are full HD resolution 1920x1080), with same results

- Monitoring software used is HWInfo via its sensors interface

Better issue description:

BIOS default settings enable both "UEFI boot" and "Legacy boot":

with this configuration, when CPU is idle C-States work as expected and CPU can reach package C8 with the display active, using both "Balanced"* and "Power Saver" Windows 10 plans (* to get C8 with "Balanced" powerplan may be necessary  to enable AHCI Link power management (via Windows registry) and changing the value in power settings gui to "HIPM+DIPM" or "Lowest").

When display goes off due to power saving timer, CPU can reach lower C-States (C9 and C10)

This is the expected (per Intel docs) behaviour, so power comsumption, heat and temperatures get benefits when there is no load.

If  "Legacy boot" option is disabled, when CPU is idle can reach only package C2 state if the display is active.

When display goes off due to power saving timer, CPU can now reach package C8 and lower (do note that if you just unplug HDMI cable or manually power off the display via power button, CPU still remains in C2).

This is not the expected behaviour, because system cannot get advantage of its lovely built-in power saving features.

I am an IT-Pro guy and a passionate user, so I tried to find a solution by myself but no luck:

- I tried changing any related or unrelated bios setting in every crazy combination possible without any effect, you need "Legacy boot" enabled

- I tried any available graphic driver for this unit and also generic non-NUC from Iris Plus 640 page (newer tried was Version:24.20.100.6136), no difference

- I tried tuning every Windows power setting - also advanced hidden ones - in every power plan, but no difference

- I tried also (just for fun) loading Windows 10 from USB drive with no other drive connected to the unit, no difference

Do note the same thing happened on previous BIOS version I went through before last revision (0062, 0063, 0064), so downgrade to that revisions is useless.

Do also note that any recent Linux distribution I tried (Kernel from 4.15 up to 4.17) do not suffer this problem:

also without loading firmware blobs on boot, CPU can reach lower package C-States - as Intel Powertop reports - just as expected also when  "Legacy boot" option is disabled in BIOS and the display is active (may be necessary tuning some options to enable all power saving features, but it is expected and works fine).

Paradox here is Windows 10 is the only supported operating system by Intel for this NUC and - as per following Intel recommendations - should be installed only in UEFI mode to avoid issues.

Supported Operating Systems for Intel® NUC Products - "UEFI Boot is required to install Windows 10 - this is set by default in BIOS Setup. Using Legacy Boot results in multiple errors in Device Manager."

Some thoughts:

I think it is clearly a bug, it shows itself only in Windows 10 but I do not think Windows 10 is the culprit itself:

as reported, leaving "Legacy boot" option enabled everything works as expected, so I suppose this problem is bios related but obviously I can be wrong (as I never thought that such option could have such impact on power saving features).

UEFI and legacy boot initialize hardware in different ways and some of the features involved in power saving options are based on firmware blobs, anyway this is out of my control and I just don't have any other idea on how to try fixing it, so I hope someone can "pass the ball" to the right team and investigate about this issue, which could be present on other Kaby Lake NUCs as well.

To me and - I suppose - to the largest part of owners and/or potential owners - leaving "Legacy boot" option enabled is not an actual solution nor an option because:

- it prevents booting via UEFI PXE and micro sd slot (due to PCIe interface)

- it prevents (or may prevent) booting from NVME PCIe SSD, and if you disable it you'll loose idle power saving features

- if "secure boot" is needed and so enabled, "Legacy boot" is consequently disabled and you'll loose idle power saving features

- power saving features like CPU Package C-States and Speed Shift are really important arguments of choice when buying these units and should work as expected at least in the only OS supported by Intel

Steps to reproduce:

To get Idle C-States NOT working with display active:

- In VisualBIOS, load BIOS default settings with F9 and disable "Legacy boot", save with F10 and confirm.

- Boot Windows 10 and monitor CPU C-States with HWInfo (or any other similar software): C2 will be maximum package C-State reached in idle  with every power plan when the display is active.

To get Idle C-States working with display active (the expected behaviour):

- In VisualBIOS, load BIOS default settings with F9, save with F10 and confirm.

- Boot Windows 10, select "Power Saver" powerplan* and monitor CPU C-States with HWInfo (or any other similar software): C8 will be maximum package C-State reached in idle with the display active (C9 and C10 with display off via power saving timer).

* You can get C8 also with "Balanced" powerplan, but it may be necessary to enable AHCI Link power management (via Windows registry) and changing the value in power settings gui to "HIPM+DIPM" or "Lowest".

I hope it can be fixed, thanks in advance to everyone who can investigate about it.

Best regards to all the community,

M
