NUC5i5RYH won't boot - power button light blinks 3 times, pauses, blinks 3 times, pauses...

Hello,

I have submitted a support request to Intel for this.  I have a new NUC5i5RYH for which I ordered and installed CT2KIT51264BF160BJ (8GB Kit (4GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM, DDR3 PC3-12800 memory module) as well as a SSDSC2BP240G4R5 (Intel® SSD 730 Series - 240GB, 2.5in SATA 6Gb/s, 20nm, MLC).  Right from the start, I was getting the issue where the power button light blinks 3 times, pauses, blinks 3 times, pauses, and repeats.  Occasionally the hard drive light would come on.  Eventually I would be able to get it to boot (by removing and reconnecting the power connection, pressing the power button over and over, that sort of thing) but then I would get the message saying:

BIOS has detected unsuccessful post attempt(s).

Possible causes include recent changes to BIOS

Performance Options or recent hardware change.

Press 'Y' to enter Setup or 'N' to cancel and attempt to boot with the previous settings.

Pressing ‘N’ would get me back to three blink state with the same difficulty in booting.  Pressing ‘Y’ got me into setup where I tried various things (including re-flashing the BIOS from the latest available on the Intel NUC support site – successfully completed that twice) but everything I tried would lead me back to the same three blink state with difficulty in booting.  According to the documentation online, the 3 blink state indicates a memory problem.  According to Intel's support link (http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-034982.htm), my memory should be compatible with the NUC5i5RYH.  Furthermore, when in setup, I can see that the memory is recognized (as is the SSD). So I really don’t have any confidence that the problem is actually with the memory.  I have now gotten to the point where I cannot get the NUC to boot at all (nothing on the display, mouse won’t light up, keyboard won’t light up) – all I get is the aforementioned 3 blink state.  I have read online support tips on the Intel site as well as on this forum. I have tried six ways to Sunday via memory installation permutations (swapping the memory unit positions, trying just one unit in the bottom slot, trying just one unit in the top slot, trying the other unit alone in each slot – all of that sort of thing) to get past the 3 blink state and at least back to where I get the above referenced “BIOS has detected unsuccessful post attempt(s)” message; and the only change in behavior I observe is if I try booting with just one memory unit installed in the bottom slot.  In that scenario, I get a constant on light on the power button rather than the 3 blink pattern (but still get nothing on the display, mouse won’t light up, keyboard won’t light up).  Time to send in for an exchange?  If so, what?  Just the memory?  Just the NUC?  Everything?

Thanks,

Bill Bartol

Broardwell NUC CIR receiver issue

Hi

I have just bought my first Intel NUC the NUC5I3RYK to be specific. But i have unfortunately found out that the ir receiver aren't working out of the box. I have tried with Openelec 5.0.

I have tried updating the firmware and tried the following fix that seemed to work on haswell NUC but without any luck.

Re: Haswell NUC CIR receiver (ACPI issue?)

when I ssh into my NUC and type the dmesg i get the following text:

[ 3016.364580] nuvoton-cir 00:01: [io 0x03e0-0x03e7]

[ 3016.364625] nuvoton-cir 00:01: [irq 10]

[ 3016.364628] nuvoton-cir 00:01: [io 0x03f0-0x03f7]

[ 3016.365146] nuvoton-cir 00:01: activated

[ 3016.365149] nuvoton-cir 00:01: IR PNP Port not valid!

[ 3016.365276] nuvoton-cir 00:01: disabled

does anybody have a solution for this? then it would be much appreciated.

[BUG] BIOS Boot Order no longer honored / saved when LAN boot set first

The following condition has been confirmed on 2 NUC units as follows:

DC3217IYE

Bios v. 0055   release: 12/5/14

When network booting is enabled and the boot order is arranged so that the LAN network boot (pxe) is the first source, this setting is not honored.

After "exit & save" and a subsequent restart the hard drive (in this case SSD) remains the first boot device.

Thereafter reentering BIOS shows the LAN to be a subordinate to the on-board drive.

The only method to LAN boot at this time is to enter BIOS and use the "double click" on the listed LAN boot option on the main page.

This condition did not exist on BIOS versions prior to 0055.

I would also add that it is long overdue for INTEL to directly support flashing a BIOS pain-free with Linux.

NUC5i5RYH - Can I have both M.2 and sata drives installed and used at once?

I want to install an OS on my M.2 SSD and use a SATA HDD as a storage drive, but all documentation I see clearly denotes "M.2 OR SATA"

Static noise on audio out from NUC D34010WYKH1 (not fan noise)...

I bought another one of these 2 weeks ago from Amazon to use as a audio player because the previous ones worked great.   This one had significant static noise on the audio out - digital noise - increased whenever the disc ran or mouse moved or video changed.  After trying various alternative (disk swap, re-grounding, new audio cables) I found the article at thread/54903 and swapped out the power adapter.  The noise stopped immediately and completely - with the original disk and cables.   I believe that Intel may have a bad batch of FSP Group power adapters (P/N 9NA0652101, mine is SN 82231019345423016D1PB12).  If you have this problem try swapping the power adapter.

Replacing a NUC

If I were to replace my NUC with either the identical model or a newer model, and use the existing components (mSATA SSD, two 8GB Low Voltage RAM sticks & Intel 7160 wireless card), would I have to do anything regarding my OS, which is Windows 7 64bit?  Wouldn't my content & settings "transfer" to the new NUC?

Nuc 5i3RYH -- Fails to Shut Down or Sleep

$

Had my NUC 5i3RYH up & running for about a week now and no matter what I try it will not enter sleep mode or shut down.

It will indicate that it's powering down, and there will be a brief pause before it fully powers back on.

System details:

Memory installed: Crucial 4 GB Ram (CT51264BF160BJ)

HDD installed: HGST Travelstar 2.5" 500GB SATA (HTS725050A7E630)

OS: Windows 7 (up-to-date via Windows Update)

I/O device: Logitech K400 Wireless USB

BIOS Settings: Default

Network settings: Default - Connected to Gigabit LAN, Wi-Fi disabled

-----------------------------------------
Any advice on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated as it's driving me mad....since the only way to fully power down the machine is to physically remove the power  plug.

I plan on reviewing the event logs, and tinkering around with the BIOS & WoL settings .... but if anyone knows the fix and can save me some time troubleshooting that'd be great!

PXE-E61 and PXE-M0F Boot Failure

Computer was doing fine for months - then this happened.

Thought that the HD died.  Went out and bought a new SSD (actually my original HD was a reg SATA drive/ western digital.)

Got a Samsung SSD 850 EVO and tried reinstalling my OS (Ubuntu 14 LTS).  Same exact issue.

Worked with Intel Support - tried turning off anything to do with network boot in the BIOS (running the latest BIOS by the by.)  Even got a replacement, same issue.  Actually the replacement one seems a lot more clunky than my original "broken one".

The memory:

Crucial 4GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800)
CL11 SODIMM 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory Module CT51264BF160B

Actual NUC:  DN2820FYKH

Any ideas for me to try out?

Wake on Lan from S5 in Windows 8 (8.1) solved with my Nuc5i5RYK

$

Just for sharing:

As you already might know, WOL behavior has changed in Windows 8 / 8.1:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2776718

Quote:

In Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, the default shutdown behavior puts the system into the hybrid shutdown state (S4), and all devices are put into D3. WOL from S4 or S5 is unsupported. Network adapters are explicitly not armed for WOL in either S5 or S4 cases because users expect zero power consumption and battery drain in the shutdown state. This behavior removes the possibility of invalid wake-ups when an explicit shutdown is requested. Therefore, WOL is supported only from sleep (S3) or hibernation (S4) states in Windows 8 and 8.1.

So WOL is explicitly disabled in shutdown in Windows 8 and 8.1. I was trying forever to shutdown windows to S5 state and wake on wol with my tablet. After shutdown the network card led was not blinking. Now I know why. Another problem was that when go to S4 or S3 state, the NUC was booting again, after a few seconds, without doing anything. I saw this problem passing in this community before....

First: Of course the settings in the Bios and network card should be correct!

Solution:

To disable the S4 state in Windows 8 and 8.1, follow these steps.

  1. In Control Panel, open the Power Options item.
  2. Click the Choose what the power buttons do link.
  3. Clear the Turn on fast startup (recommended) check box.
  4. Click Save Settings.

Another important annoying fact: If it seems that you cannot just change the power button settings but you need to first click on the text saying something like: "Some settings are currently not available..."  Again, very "user friendly", Microsoft...

Now my Nuc switches of when using the shutdown button on my tablet. (and stays off). Sending a wol package wakes it up and boots to XBMC. This is how it should be. Another problem solved! Next.....

NUC5i5RYH Experiences

I thought I would summarize approx. 2 weeks of experience with a new NUC5i5RYH is case it helps others.

The unboxing was uneventful as was the installation of 4GB of Crucial RAM and an old Intel X25-M 2.5inch 80GB SSD. New users would be well advised to purchase only the Intel recommended RAM:

Intel® NUC Boards and Kits — System Memory

Next, I used a USB DVD drive to install Windows 7 Pro SP1. This was easy enough although you'll want to grab the Intel Driver Bundle to get network support:

Intel® Download Center

After finishing Windows Update everything seemed okay.

I wasn't really interested in running Windows but I imaged the system drive so I could slam that back at a later date for testing, curiosity or whatever.

Next, I moved on to Linux and specifically Lubuntu 14.10. This didn't go so well. Most of the stable Linux releases are not yet ready for prime time of the 5th Gen NUC. Looks like a lot of issues with the X-server and HD6000 graphics. It seems that you'll need at least a 3.18 kernel but that alone is probably not sufficient. I wasn't able to make any flavor of Mint 17 to work fully, even with the 3.19 kernel. You can get it to run with "nosetmode xforcevesa" but that uses software rendering for all the graphics.

However, the good news is that the Lubuntu (and Xubuntu) 15.04 betas work just fine. Installation is a breeze!

Working off that base, I've largely succeeded in building the HTPC of my dreams based on Kodi. However, I still have two outstanding technical issues:

1. The infra-red sensor (CIR) makes the Intel NUC very attractive for HTPC applications. However, the CIR does not appear to work at all with Linux on the Broadwell NUC's. The workarounds that helped 4th Gen NUC owners do not work on the Broadwell devices. Intel say the CIR works with Windows (I haven't verified). Fingers have been pointed at the Linux kernel although I'm more inclined to believe the BIOS has an ACPI compliance issue. Intel appear to acknowledge the problem and maybe they're looking at it. But they're certainly not making any bold promises of a fix.

Meanwhile, I went and splashed $20 on a FLIRC:

http://www.amazon.com/FLIRC-Dongle-Media-Centre-Raspberry/dp/B00BB0ETW8

And this works pretty much perfectly. I'm really quite impressed and for any impatient folks out there, I highly recommend it. I even have my IR remote powering on the NUC from the S5 state.

2. My NUC will randomly power itself on from the S5 (off) state after two or three hours, even in the middle of the night, or with nobody in the house. I have tried numerous things including BIOS settings to:

* Disable WoL

* Disable wake on RTC

* Disable wake on IR

* Disable PCIe ASPM

Again, I suspect a BIOS issue although I can't rule out the possibility that this problem is specific to my sample. So I'm agonizing over whether to RMA this unit.

I wanted to love my new NUC, but overall, I'm a little disappointed. The CIR and random power-on issues are quite irritating. I'm also less than thrilled with Intel's stance on Linux support. I think it's a little disingenuous to advertize, market and promote "Linux compatibility" but then deny all support obligations at the first hint of a problem.

Right now, I'll give the 5th Gen NUC a C+. Fixing the CIR and random power on will raise the grade quite a bit. And if new stable Linux distros work well out-of-the-box with the HD6000 graphics an A grade is still achievable by the late spring or early summer. Fingers crossed....

NUC, WIDI as the only display, wireless control

$

Hello everyone,

I have some questions about NUC, WIDI and wireless control.

1.. Are there any NUCs with replacable processors, if not currently then maybe in the near future?

2. As far as I know all NUCs have mobile processors due to TDP and power consumptions, are there any with desktop cpus? Probably not but what about in the near future? Are we going to see real little monsters?

3. Assume that I bought one and connected it to the monitor. By the help of WIDI, transfered the view to a second monitor in the adjacent door.(it's possible, right?)

How can i control the NUC from that room, any wireless keyboard with mousepad will work or not? Any cheap solution?, So no RF keyboard suggestions or extention cables etc.

4. OK this one is interesting. Yesterday I read something about fooling the NUC with a HDMI display emulator that enables us to use the master monitor wirelessly by the help of WIDI, so no monitor is connected to the NUC physically, definately cool stuff..

The Intel NUC: Widi as your only display

Is there any other way to do this on windows 8.1 or 10?

Is it possible to do this with a desktop with WIDIed cpu? I mean, with just one monitor entirely via WIDI?

If so, can i leave the desktop case somewhere in the house and put the (only) widi compatible monitor in an other room or the adjacent one and control everything from there?

If this kind of widi connection is doable, then I'm wondering if it's possible to do something similar with gpu card with a intel wireless adapter?

Well that's all, thanks for reading.

What should I put in my new NUC? NUC5i5RYH

I bought a new NUC5i5RYH and am going to run windows 8.1

What is everyone's ideal system?  I am basically using it as a HTPC - watch movies, netflix, itunes sync to my ipads and iphones, and local photo storage (which I currently use a external 2 tb drive that I will just plugin)

I was thinking about getting a m.2 128/256 and then getting a 7200 rpm notebook drive for 1tb.  Will that run too hot?  I wanted to keep it as silent as possible.

So far:

Crucial MX200 CT250MX200SSD6 M.2 Type 2260DS (Double Sided) 250GB SATA 6Gbps (SATA III) Micron 16nm MLC NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)  or considering a transcend 128gb? Thoughts?

I don't know what 2nd HD to get to fit in the 2.5 slot?  Any recommendations?

Any help in advance is greatly appreciated?  Am I missing anything?

NUC won't post after powerloss

All,

I have a NUC D34010WYK, that recently lost power and now will no longer post. Below are the symptoms I have noticed:

  • After pressing the power button the button lights up blue, and stays solid
  • Upon power up there is no video output at all.
  • The OS does not boot (cannot ssh into the machine even after waiting 24 hours)
  • Pressing the power button immediately shuts down the unit. Aka, you don't need to long press the power button to turn it off.

I have also tried recovery mode, and this is where it gets weird (By removing the bios jumper). Recovery mode works. When it recovery mode the NUC turns on, I can see a quick BIOS menu and then it drops right into recovery mode. I have successfully flashed the BIOS via recovery mode, but it has not had any affect on the machine outside of recovery mode.

I have also tried removing the wifi and ssd cards, however I still could not get the machine to post.

Any help that could be provided would be much appreciated.

NUC5I3RYH - Return for a NUC5I5RYH?

$

Hey everyone,

I was able to get the NUC5I3RYH for $285 delivered, however I'm having a little buyer's remorse.  I'm trying to get the best bang for my buck while at the same time use small efficient hardware. I'm going to be using my existing Intel 330 120GB SSD with Windows 7. I already have a Dell U2415H w/ AC511 soundbar on order and have the two 4GB KVR16LS11/4 in my possession.  The usage will be MS Office (Excel, Word, Access), accounting software (Quickbooks, MS Money), and some web browsing.

In your opinion, is it worth paying the extra $100 for the Broadwell i5 NUC, given my usage scenario? Or will the performance difference be unnoticeable? It sounds like browsers, and software in general, will start to leverage the GPU more and more, so that makes me feel better.

Overscan issue

Hi,

So my TV does not save my pictures settings to fix the overscan issue. The only way to fix this is to customize the aspect ratio via Windows.. however the graphic drivers for the Intel NUC N2820 does not have an option to do so. When will this Intel NUC ever have this option? It's been so long.

I'm on the latest drivers, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

There are reported memory compatibility issues with Crucial* CT51264BF160BJ.C8FND (this should be soon reflected on the memory compatibility list)

It was discovered that there are multiple versions of this module and the more recent ones are having issues when integrated with Intel® NUC Kit NUC5i5RYH or with Intel® NUC Kit NUC5i5MYHE.

For now, I recommend Crucial* CT51264BF160BJ.C8FER (this one is the older part number and it works).

D54250WYK, Intel SSD 530 180GB - disk read error

Hi,

I put together an D54250WYK with an Intel SSD 530 180GB, running Windows 7.

Ever so often on reboot, it will fail on startup with the text-mode error "A disk read error has occurred - press ctrl-alt-del to restart".

Sometimes I press ctrl-alt-del and next reboot system will power up.

Sometimes I have to remove the power and wait 5 minutes and it will boot fine - if I try straight away it will continue to fail.

I've run the Intel SSD Toolbox and done a full scan with no errors reported. The firmware on the drive is the latest available.

Any thoughts on how I can resolve this? Any theories on if it is the drive or the system or something else?

Thanks...

NUC5i5RYK ram and video problem

$

0

I just picked up a NUC5i5RYK and Crucial 4x2 GB (CT51264BF160BJ) memory. As soon as I installed both sticks of ram and tried to power on the NUC, I got three flashing lights indicating memory issue. After much trial and error, it turned out the NUC didn't like anytime I plugged anything into the top memory slot. However both sticks of RAM works individually when plugged into the bottom slot. Still don't know why this would be the case. However, it turned out a different set of Crucial 4x2 GB ram (BLS2K4G3N169ES4) works just fine on both slots, which I borrowed for a friend. Still don't know why the first set of ram didn't work, since it used to work just fine on previous generation i5 NUC boxes.

Anyway, after getting the system up and running (Windows 7 Professional 64 bit) and installing the latest driver bundle RYH-RYK-Win7-64bit-Driver-Bundle-Mar2015.zip  I thought everything was good to go...until I tried to play a video from youtube (through chrome). The CPU usage hit almost 100% trying to play a 1080p video, and trying to play 4k content was out of the question. I was barely getting 10-15 fps and needless to say, the video was unwatchable. Seeing this, I tried to play some local content from the ssd, and the results were identical. My 7 year old thinkpad handles video better than this. It's as if the GPU was doing nothing, while the CPU was trying to render the video. Intel claims that HD6000 graphics can handle 4k content, but I would beg to differ based on my experience. Even opening 2-3 chrome tabs each playing 720p videos caused the CPU usage to reach almost 100%. I don't know if this strange system behavior is some sort of driver problem, or related to the RAM issue I first observed (although, this is repeatable regardless of which RAM i used), or something is actually wrong with the box. Any help from anyone about this would be much appreciated. Would be interested to know if others also ran into similar issues.

On a related note, one of my friends also bought the exact same combination (NUC5i5RYK and Crucial 4x2 GB CT51264BF160BJ ram) and his system completely failed to boot with the exact same 3 flashing light memory error.
